Thing is though if woolworths go under there will not be many thousands of peoples mortgages and savings relying on it. Woolworths have not moved with the times, its like going back to the 70s in their stores

The fact is though that Woolworths is closing because it wasn't doing very well. I'm sure people can lament it going if they want, but if they were actually shopping there in droves it'd still be open.

True not many items are 50% off, but some items are decently discounted from 20-40%.
It seems that as the closer the final openin day approaches, the more the goods are discounted.
For example when the Sale was initially announced a couple of weeks back DVDs and Games were only 10% off.
I went in yesterday and that discount rate was now 20%.
They had the Ironman DVD which I purchased for 12.75(Before discount)
After discount it was £10.20.
I went into Smith's and compared their price of Ironman and it was £15.95.
I also went to Tescos it was £15.95.
So needless to say I was quite pleased with the price I got my copy for.
There are definitely bargains to be had, If you are quick.

Funny how you're more bothered about 27,000 Woolworths employees than what you are about the 850,000 whose jobs rely on the car industry and their suppliers. Woolworths has been muscled on by the likes of Primark, TK Maxx, Wilkinsons and all the major supermarket chains.

Of course they face the same hardships, but we are looking at numbers and the future of Britain as a car-manufacturing nation. Retailing jobs are far easier to replace than skilled engineering jobs.

Nothing to add but an injection of nostalgia.
I was looking for the Christmas version of this song but there isn't one out there, so here's Roy Castle belting out this non-festive one. Check out his Vic Reeves impression at 0:24

If Woolies had a decent retail strategy then they would not have gone under. Their shops were in the main disorganised, and at worst dirty holes.
I used to shop there a lot when I was younger, but as time went on I realised how bad the shops were.
I have heard a lot of people say it was a shame that Woolies was closing, or a 'national tragedy' but when you ask the same people if they shopped there in the last 5 years most replied no.
Of course it's a disaster for those who have lost their jobs, and my heart goes out to them, but most of the blame lies squarely with Woolies management and directors for not moving with the times.

If Woolies have gone to the wall for not moving with the times, IMO the Co Op can't be far behind, they've already shut everything bar the food parts of both the Snig Hill and Hillsborough stores, and when the other departments were open it was like visiting Grace Brothers' off Are you being served?! Too old fashioned IMO.
Then again I fell out with the Co Op years ago over their stupid and IMO sexist employment policy regarding checkout operators.

The writing had been on the wall for a long time for Woolworths, same with Zavvi if the rumours are true.
The annoying thing is the way the media have blamed this all on the last couple of months and the state of the economy, when this is not entirely true.
It would help us all if the media found something else to talk about for a while, as they are influencing shoppers behaviour which is making things worse.

Oh My God x 10. ! The lights are going out all over High Street. Whatever will the people of Britain do ? I know we have lots of unemployment benefits, disability benefits, redundancy payments, mortgage relief, hardship allowances........and as a last resort, basic accommodation and soup kitchens........but, apart from all these, how can we survive ?? Will we all have to start reading and talking to our children instead of watching Big Brother.......etc......on our latest De-luxe plasmas ? God forbid !
Will we have to start cooking stews and things instead of buying ' Easy-Eat-It-Now Takeaway Goodgrub ' ? Will we have to start walking or cycling or get a small car instead of........no......I can 't go on ........!
Well, let 's all try and be brave and face the future, under Mr. Darling 's guidance and led by our wise Old Owl, Gordon. True, we may have to make sacrifices, but when we remember that our Leaders have had to make sacrifices too, we should march forward, proud to fall on our swords [ so to speak ] for our country.

Sheep mentatility.
Domino effect.
A vicious circle.
The media is probably doing us all a favor. After all debt is the root of all these problems.

A few months ago they considered renaming it the Euro shop but didn't want to put the prices up.
