Nope...definitely mean series 5 and 6. Became too much about the sci-fi and not enough about the comedy. Series 7 doesn't register on my memory banks at all, so not going to comment on that! Series 8 had some moments (the canaries for a start) and potential, and the sci-fi was toned down a tad - but the budget for the effects was too high, and too low at the same time (the T-Rex was terrible).

Red Dwarf was fantastic to start with (The End, Future Echoes and Me2 were highlights), got better in the second season (Kryten, Better Than Life, Stasis Leak and Queeg) , three and four were classics (Marooned, Backwards, Polymorph, Last Day, Camille, White Hole, Justice and Meltdown). Season five only has Back To Reality which is rewatchable (Quarantine was funny at the time, but not on repeated viewings). Six has Gunmen of the Apocalypse and Out of Time going for it. Seven....erm....move along...nothing to rewatch here! Eight had Cassandra (what an episode), some of the 3 part Back In The Red (especially Rimmer getting the sexual magnetism stuff), and the genius of Krytie TV, plus the cliffhanger of Only The Good....

Nope, 5 and 6 just don't work for me (and 7 never existed....at all.....ever!)

You have forgotten a fair few, Thanks for the Memory, Waiting For God, Balance of Power and Parralel Universe (love the holly hop drive).

Every episode from the first 5 series was thoroughly enjoyable, well, I thought so.

If you don't agree, Mr Flibble will fry you with his hex vision.

Didn't forget them at all. Those episodes just don't do anything for me on rewatching.

It has all the hallmarks of something which will undoubtedly be a massive disappointment.

well the original cast aren't up to much if you can prize them away from coronation street, massive machines, scrapheap challenge and kids tv/blade 3

Just goes to show how subjective it is really. Series 5 is my favourite of all of them. The whole series was consistently brilliant in my opinion.

You say that Back to Reality and, to a lesser degree, Quarantine are the only episodes worth watching, but what about Holoship, The Inquisitor, Terrorform and Demons and Angels? All brilliant episodes and among the best ever made as far as I'm concerned.

Holoship was terrible (in my opinion of course), Inquisitor was alright, but not rewatchable to any degree, and the other two don't rate either way in my eyes, and were just average.

Like you say, it is very subjective, and on the Red Dwarf forums debate has raged for years over the best and worst of the show (although everyone is in agreement that series 7 was best forgotten).

Yeah I can't possibly argue with that. It had some funny moments but they were too few and far between.

The biggest problems with series 7 were that it used a 'movie style' camerawork, and wasn't filmed in front of an audience - thus they couldn't judge whether a joke was actually funny or not until broadcast.

New Red Dwarf Specials Confirmed

19 September, 2008

New specials? Proper information? After all the rumours? Oh smeg yes.

reddwarf.co.uk has the facts. As announced by Robert Llewellyn for Grant Naylor Productions this week at the UKTV seasonal press launch, the project is a short series of brand new specials to celebrate the 21st birthday of Red Dwarf.

New Red Dwarf Specials Confirmed New Red Dwarf Specials Confirmed New Red Dwarf Specials Confirmed

Doug Naylor will be masterminding the four half-hour instalments, and the regular cast will all be reprising their iconic roles. They are being made by GNP for UKTV's free-to-air channel, Dave - our new best friends!

Red Dwarf repeats on Dave - including an anniversary weekend run - have picked up remarkable numbers since the channel was reborn on Freeview, and it's becoming clear to all concerned that the show is picking a new, third generation audience. With the usual involvement from Red Dwarf partners BBC Worldwide, you can also expect international broadcasts to follow (and, we'd imagine, a top-quality DVD release in the fullness of time).

"It's very new news to me - I really only fully heard the details yesterday," Robert told comedian/host Michael McIntyre. "We're doing four new shows with the original cast. Two of them are going to be, like, proper episodes of Red Dwarf. One of them is so exciting I've been asked not to say anything about that because other people will steal the idea - and it is a great idea, quite challenging for us as performers. And the other one is a kind of behind-the-scenes-y... the truth. There's been so many rumours and gossip about Red Dwarf, about whether there's going to be a movie and whether we all get on, all those things... The downside for me, which is just dawning on me now, is I've got to do the 'rubber' thing again, which I haven't done for ten years."

For the record, and direct from the makers, the details of the four shows right now - while wholly subject to change - are:

Show One - The Making Of The Specials
A highly entertaining look at what goes on behind the scenes on a Red Dwarf production.

Show Two - Red Dwarf Special: Part One
The cast get back into character, and costume, a decade on...

Show Three - Red Dwarf Special: Part Two
The adventure continues...

Show Four - A Clip Show With a Serious Difference
The cast do it their way. Red Dwarf as you have never, ever seen it before!

The shows will broadcast sometime in 2009 and, if successful, could pave the way for further Red Dwarf TV projects. Thanks to movie and broadcaster wrangles, Grant Naylor haven't been in a position to produce new Red Dwarf since Series VIII went out to audiences of over eight million in 1999. This exciting development suggests a new and shiny future for everyone's favourite sci-fi comedy.

To be kept in the loop as we cover the new production, register your email address with reddwarf.co.uk in the box at the bottom of the page.

The Boys from the Dwarf are back!

Looks like its officially confirmed!

then they realised that NONE of them were funny....it almost made me physically sick the childish humour they tried out.

Good, good, good. But what I want to know is... will the new episodes carry on from the cliffhanger they left at the end of series 8 or will they just be one-offs?

Back for a two-parter over the Easter weekend.
Quote:
The new two-part series Red Dwarf: Back to Earth will be followed by a "no holds barred" episode without sets, special effects or autocue.

The weekend will climax with Red Dwarf: the Making of Back to Earth, a behind-the-scenes special from the new episodes.
Please, no Kochanski...

The new two-parter will begin a decade on from when the crew of the Red Dwarf were last seen, with a "shock development" throwing Rimmer, Lister, Cat and Kryten back to Earth.
From here.

I must admit I'm having another 'don't bugger about with the classics' moment here. Better to break out the 88-93 DVD box sets than resurrect a spectre of the 1997 travesty.

I'm going to have to remind myself how the last series finished now!
Reckon I might as well start with The End.
