I left sheffield in 1998 to come to uni in birmingham, my family are still in sheffield so I do come back up pretty often. Left uni in 2001 and stayed down here as I landed myself a job in estate agency.

Been in exile ever since!

I left to go to uni. I moved south to the Midlands, then up north over the border then back south to Leicestershire in 2002. Still call Sheffield my home though.

The Sheffield branch of the company I worked for closed down so was given the choice of working in Leeds, Peterborough or redundancy.

Reduncancy was not an option with a mortgage and young family - if I worked from Leeds the company thought it too close to Sheffield to give me the relocation package (which was substantial) so took teh cash and plumped for Peterborough.

Actually ended up in a little town called Oakham, then in Leicestershire, now in Rutland. It has been an absolute brilliant place to bring up the kids, so apart from the wrench from the family and friends in Sheff. have never really regretted the decision.

All that being said - still have very fond memories of my old home town - especially in the late 60's at Christmas time, walking round the city centre soaking up the atmosphere that is not there nowadays - or is it because I am that much older and view the world through more cynical eyes?

Been here now for 21 years but both the wife and I have agreed that come retirement we would like to move back north - not Sheffield, but somewhere in the Peak District which is where we spent most of our spare time whe we were courting and first married.

Oakham, where they poke `em.

Leicestershire is a brilliant place to live, I miss Sheffield, but its a different world down here and theres no way would I ever move back. Even if the other half and I were to split up Id still stay here and Id advise anyone who fancied a move to move to either here or to Rutland.

i am sheffield born and bred,i left sheff in 1999 after a marriage break up THEN a few months later my home was burgled. my parents had moved to lincs and my brother and family was in the process of moving there too,so i went too.i never thought i would move out of sheffield,i loved being only 10 mins from meadowhall, nightlife etc but your priorities change as you get older and you have children. i now live in rural norfolk and love it,i would never move back, this is a far better place to bring my kids up.i still come to sheffield a few times a year as a have a couple of very good friends here and my sons father still lives here so he comes here once a month. as i am always reminded you can take the girl out of sheffield but you cant take sheffield out of the girl! lol my accent gives plenty of people amusement.lol

I think PeterW and myself must be the oldest on this thread. I left Sheffield around 1959-1960. It was job related I suppose. Not that I was out of work, but I was bored and felt the need to travel.
I'd always moved around even as a kid during the war,and when I got out of the military in '53 I was very unsettled.
So, I was in the 'Three Tuns' having the rap with this Irish guy and he happened to mention a contract on a railway tunnel near Sevenoaks. Well, I knew about railways and I could lay bricks so I thought I was a natural. I gave my jazz records away, sold some blood for my travel expenses (just kidding), and I was gone, just like that. (Stole that from Tommy Cooper).
Apart from a couple of trips back to Sheffield for family stuff, that's it. Lived in a lot of places since then, none of them bad, but I still have a yearning sometimes. But I resist.
Been happily married for years (a Derbyshire chica) and I wouldn't change anything.

I left Sheffield in 1990 to move to Florida to live with my longtime penpal, we got married and today we live in Lake Worth Florida, I work at Florida Atlantic University in the Office for Students with Disabilities and I also teacher Elementary Education Art. Love it here, but I miss home, miss my family, friends, food - especially chocolate, and the people in general. I was home at Christmas 2006, everything has changed, things that were once there are now gone, places closed, but the people just as I remember, Brillant.

In 1973, at the age of 31, I left Sheffield with my wife for Lincolnshire, so I've been there longer than in Yorkshire. Fresh air, quiet roads - would we ever want to leave where we live now? Not likely. We do miss Sheffield as it was in the 60s, before they mucked it about.

I moved to London in 1980 to be with a girlfriend who had moved there. Stayed for 18 years, married, 3 kids and came back to Sheffield in 1999. Met a new partner up here who can't wait to get back to London but I prefer Sheffield.

I left as the 21st century was moving ever closer to the Sheff/Barnsley village where I lived. It was quiet and agricultural, no crime, but only a matter of time.. traffic noise increasing almost daily.. still a Sheffield Lass, but living in my beloved rural Northumberland. Coast AND countryside!

I first left in 1947 for 2 years national service, national slavery would have been a better description. Returned after demob for a couple of years but the place was a stinking smoke choking cesspit so I one day thought maybe the Army as a career might not be too bad after all. I stayed in "till 1973 and had a wonderful life visiting over 20 countries. After retirement I built a boat and sailed down to Spain and the Med. sold the boat in Tunisia and came over to Florida about 13 years ago. The only bit I miss is Derbyshire, you can keep the rest.

Got out of the army in Feb 1969. Went back plumbing with the SCPWD. Walking round the Wybourn repairing burst pipes. By the time I had paid income tax,nhs contributions and graduated pension scheme payment. A road sweeper on the dole with 4 kids was better off than me. He got his dole money, stamps to get coal free, stamps to get shoes for his kids free and stamps for free food. These blokes were laughing at me for working.
I was in Australia by August 1969 and never regreted one minute.

Left Sheffield in Sept. 2004 for the sunnier climes of Kent and whilst you have endured the flooding, we have basked in sunshine. I loved and was proud of my home town but I would never return to live there.
