You sometimes already have to wait to get into the station.  Yes they will have to be more HS2 trains travelling from Chesterfield (nearer Clay Cross) to Sheffield and extra Manchester trains from Dore. There is plenty of space for a third or forth track except between Staveley and Dore and at the South end of Sheffield station.  There are no plans for the two longer dedicated HS2 platforms in Sheffield. There are no plans to cope with the extra reversing or terminating Manchester services. There are no plans to cope with the longer trains and extra platforms needed for the services to Barnsley, Doncaster, Worksop etc. There are no plans to deal with the traffic jam which is now the situation at the north end or how the HS2 gets through there to Leeds. There are no plans for any extra Supertram routes or park and rides.  Personally I believe that HS2 will be built to Birmingham then Manchester. The Eastern section will be abandoned as there are no full HS2 services to Nottingham, Derby or Sheffield and no longer any prospect of extending the route to Newcastle and Scotland. Also Stagecoach is unable to make a profit on its East Coast line to Leeds, pressure will be on to avoid a third nationalization of that route. June 29 2017  Stagecoach 90% operate the ECML including routes to Leeds and Scotland. Virgin have a 10% stake for the brand name. Has nothing whatsoever to do with Virgin West Coast mainline.  Stagecoach are actively seeking to renegotiate their ECML contract as did GNER and National Express before. Every other region has done ok.  But is Chez2 points out (as have loads of people on this thread) it's about capacity. Long distance train journeys have doubled since 1990. The modern way will be syncing parallel trains to transfer passengers onto the fast moving carriages then the transfer station train slowing to stop at the next of two connected stations then back along the same line in the opposite direction to transfer onto the none stop fast train in the opposite direction. Train station Hah!  Perhaps they could use a system, for picking up / dropping off passengers, similar to the method previously used to pick up and drop off mail bags used by Mail Trains. That way there should not be a need to slow and stop for passengers to board / alight at stations. In addition, should a large number of passengers be picked up and piled into a coach, there would need to be some sort of padding to soften the landing. Have you considered what might happen if one of those passengers is in a wheelchair? Wouldn't there be a danger if the next passenger landed on the wheelchair?  I fail to see just how passengers could be dropped off the train. Remember that we'd be talking about a speeding train and having people hanging out of the carriage might be dangerous, not only in the case of people hanging from a moving train, but there's also the problem of people crashing into trackside obstructions like trees, signal gantries etc.  I fail to see how a large number of disembarking passengers could be allowed to hang out of the train. You'd need special carriages with the capacity to disembark at speed. What it would cost in terms of extra staff for hanging the disembarking passengers outside the train hasn't been considered.
