New B&M and Hillsborough shopping

Recommended Posts

Really excellent to hear that they have opened up a B&M Bargains in Hillsborough. Jobs when work is needed and investment in what what would be an empty space.

My Dad came up visiting from St Ives this week, a place that only just tolerates a Tesco on the outside of town, and went into the B&M in Rotherham to find it a refreshing change to actually get value for money.

Nice one Hillsborough :)

M&S would be looking for around 40,000 customer transactions per week as a minimum, I am sure they will have assed the area for opportunities.

I am sure they haven't done it properly, if they (had) open (ed) a store on or just off Penistone road with parking they would double that amount. (have you been in the Ecclesall road shop? It is practically empty, even on Saturdays!, sure the same people dismissing Hillsborough did their research on that one!)

Pretty sure that is down to shoddy market research, as I alluded to earlier: the average income for S6 might be below average, but there are plenty of affluent people around, this is one big area covered by one postcode!

What really bugs me is that it is a genuine conversation amongst us and our neighbours: Should we move to the southwest of the city? One of the things that keeps coming up is the lack of shopping for people like us.

Edit BTW if that sounds un-egalitarian to you, go and rejoice at all the crap stores on offer right now.

My understanding is that they have thoroughly reviewed the new units on Halifax road and were planning a store there. I have no idea why they backed out or postponed the decision, but they have.

The issue could be that, as it was with the co-op, the investment in a site in this area, with the planned Sainsbury store is a risk.

The investment in a new store would be a minimum of £1.5 million.

The Halifax road units would make sense for them, I can see how they think Sainsburys would be a risk, but I genuinely don't think it will be. They cater for different needs.

Sainsburys for the weekly shop (although we'll stick to the Morrisons, I like dodging OAPs chatting with their trolleys across the narrow isles) and M&S for the 'let's have some nice food this weekend' impulse shop.

Interesting indeed! After some digging I worked out that the wards Hillsborough, Stannington, and Walkley (ie. S6) have over 60,000 inhabitants, that doesn't include the natural attraction of Hillsborough to other wards (Grenoside/Chapeltown to name but a few)

I did some sums, a lot of it is based on generalisations and I don't like doing that, yet I reckon that the potential retail spending figure for this area is about 200 pounds per week per household, times that with 25000 households and that is 5 million pounds per week just for S6 inhabitants. Of course a lot of that goes on weekly supermarket shops, fuel and unforeseen/savings, but still with all the passing trade of Penistone Road there is a very strong case for investment in the area.

Update: Just been to satisfy my curiosity. It is huge and a massive upgrade over the Coop, the place does offer a lot of the same as other shops in the area though, Home Bargains, Dunelm Mill, Wilkos even B&Q. So although it is a nice new shop I do wonder what it adds to the area.

I was about to scoff at the £200 figure, until I read the rest of your post and realised that you were including supermarket and petrol shopping.

The potential to spend doesn't automatically translate into spending of course, I live in the area, and I use Hillsborough if I can get what I want there, which means I probably average about £5 a month, half of which is a coffee at the Java Lounge. Excluding my food and petrol though, I spend very little in retail shops anywhere, I buy clothes in the city centre or meadowhall (but as a man that's infrequent), I buy electrical goods, gadgets, toys, computers and so on all online, I buy most of my books online. My biggest retail spend is probably on beer in the city centre, and that's maybe £40 every fortnight.

Having read the posts on here it has made me laugh rather a lot!

I have grown up in Sheff 6 and remained in the area as it is so beautiful and a lovely area to live in.

There have been many changes in the areas over the years and Not for the best!

Most people are talking about big retailers, Hillsborough used to be such a mix of lovely shops, but a hell of a lot of independent retailers offering a great mix of retail outlets, and it was a really good shopping centre.

The Supertram killed Hillsborough...when the works started on Supertram they made it difficult to shop in the area and most of the independent traders could not sustain their businesses and eventually the damage from that closed the decent shops down.

I rarely go to Hillsborough to shop as it is full of charity shops, payday loan shops, hairdressers, estate agents or banks. There are only cheap outlets still trading.

I like Home Bargains and cheaper outlets but also would appreciate some quality shops.

A decent clothes shop, a decent shoe shop, sports, decent food outlets,

a good deli and various other things that would entice the more affluent back to shop on their own doorsteps.

Where there is lots of cheap scrubby shops ya will get lots of cheap scrubby people!

With that comment I am not saying that everyone who uses Hillsborough is scrubby but it has gone way way down over the last few years!

I agree with most of the things you are saying except for your view on the tram. It might indeed have been a right hassle and it causes all sorts of traffic issues at certain times of the day, but the tram being here is what is bringing new people into the area.

Also, I totally agree with your view on the smaller shops needing a massive reset (although they are not all scrubby!), but that will only happen if one or two larger and higher quality retailers make the jump - that will trigger an increase in spending in the area and thus attract new higher quality shops.

In the past few years a number of better quality shops have tried to open in the area but some of them just collapsed under the lack of appropriate footfall.

I am not talking about the tram now it is up and running but the construction of the Supertram took so long and caused so much chaos...Middlewood road was shut off to traffic for so long (can't remember exactly how long the construction took but it felt like years!)...buses were detoured onto Penistone Road and this put a lot of traders out of business!

I Don't know how long you have lived in this area but once gone it never recovered.

People have tried with various things but it has never really been quality! or enough to entice shoppers back.

Hillsborough needs several good quality outlets to make it worthwhile going there.

The majority of shops are selling the same items so all that is happening is instead of one outlet prospering they all share the same market and business wise, IMO, doesn't make sense.

The area is run down, shabby and a lot of undesirables hanging around...

there isn't even a public toilet in the precinct ( unless you pay at the café) or anywhere else throughout Hillsborough which is quite disgusting really.

It has nothing to entice anybody these days...and to me seeing it go down the pan is very sad!

Actually, there is a free public loo in the interchange, it has baby changing facilities and disabled access.

I went in to B&M to have a proper look round today, but the heat was killing. No air conditioning, just a couple of big fans. I was going to buy some chocolate but it felt as if it was melting in the heat.

What do you reckon to it though, worth a visit ?
