  1. I learnt with John Smedley - can't remember his number, but it's in the yellow pages - from Hawksley Avenue in Hillsborough. My parents also bought me a few lessons for my birthday to get me started... I was a nightmare and at 30 thought I had left it too late, but he was a great instructor, very patient, and well - I passed... Horray!
  2. Record Collector in Broomhill - not town I know, but not far...
  3. How rude! I just don't understand why people can't be honest and own up to their own mistakes! Our car was hit by a bin lorry. We heard the big crunch and looked straight out of the window (which at 3 floors up had a good view) and my husband went outside and had a long discussion with the driver who was really apologetic and said that it was his first day as a driver. I thought that we were very calm and understanding considering it was a car that we had purchased brand new and had only had for 3 months! Details were took and it was all over with as far as we were concerned... Roll on TWO years... Received a letter from the solicitors of our insurers stating that the refuse collection company are denying that one of their vehicles was involved or even that the accident ever took place. They have asked us to describe what the driver looked like - after 2 years!!! I don't know, what a farce!
  4. We have one at the Red Deer. It is very hard - but always has a theme to offer some clues...
  5. While we always welcome suggestions regarding our choice of ales on offer, I must admit I would rather not discuss this in a thread entitled 'Red Deer - Awful Beer.' This thread appears to be based on a bad experience for just four people, one of whom remembers drinking a beer we have never stocked, at a price we have never charged for any ale. This is in no way indicative of the majority of our customers' experience, and as previously mentioned, we are regularly complimented on the quality of the beer we serve. We are a member of Cask Marque, and were recently voted as Camra's pub of the month. I believe we serve an excellent choice of top quality beer. True, we are unable to stock many local ales, but we do our best to provide a diverse range for all tastes. If you don't like Bank's Bitter (which I believe, like Tetley's, is often unfairly maligned, as it is a delicious and complex ale), we have others you might like. If you are not sure, ask to have a taste first. Please be aware that we are closed on Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th August, for re-carpeting. We hope to see you all soon to inspect our new shag pile and sample the Bank's!
  6. I am surprised and saddened to hear that some of you have had a less than excellent experience at the Red Deer. While I admit that the pub has looked tatty recently, we are just now reaching the end of a major redecoration. We have built a shelter in the garden and redecorated throughout. We decided to carry out the work to coincide with the smoking ban, and as such, appreciate that the place was in need of redecoration for some time. With respect to your complaints about the quality of the real ale on offer, might I suggest that if you are unhappy, let us know straight away. We are very committed to ensuring the best quality, and while there are a huge number of reasons your beer may not be perfect, many of these can be resolved easily once we know there is a problem. We are regularly complimented on the quality of our beer, and on the odd occasion we have a problem or make a mistake, we can usually fix it immediately. Running a real ale pub is not easy, and over the past 6 years we have had many ups and downs, especially with our less than supportive pub company. We do, however, strive to provide top quality and value beer in a pleasant atmosphere, despite extensive trade price increases and perpetually rising utility expenses. We very much appreciate your continued support.
  7. I don't think it is any more - I don't think that anybody wanted to work on a Sunday! (Can't blame them really!)
  8. Thanks guys! We're trawling through the websites now! Wish these places were open today so we can just book it!
  9. My partner and I want to get married in Lapland in February. Has anybody here done the same and can offer any advice? I am really excited, but read a piece on a website where somebody had a rubbish time! We are particularly keen to see the Northern Lights, and while I know they cannot be guaranteed, I would be interested to know if anybody has seen them up there in February...
  10. I would also reccommend The Old Vicarage. The wine list fantastic!!
  11. What about a bit of a driving ghost tour near or on Halloween?! We could also go to the Stocksbridge by-pass and maybe some other spooky spots where they used to be gibbets! (but I'm not getting out of the car, because if I get really scared I might do a little bit of wee!)
  12. Can we come too? We want to see a ghost!! What is going on with the sheffield Paranormal website? Have they stopped arranging visits to haunted sites - everything is a bit dated on it now
  13. It was the strangest thing! Our stuff was found behind the Deepend and handed into the police! It was a mates bag, with my wallet in it and we just thought that it had been knocked off the stage in Gina G excitement! We went out straight from work and there was loads of stuff in her bag including house keys and letter with the Hillsborough address (!?), expensive sunglasses, 2 wallets with loads of credit cards, 2 mobiles etc. When we got back to mine my partner drove past her house to check that everything was OK, and it seemed to be. Nothing had been taken, apart from about £10 between us! How weird... A bit worrying for a while though! Thanks to whoever handed it in!
  14. I learnt to drive with John Smedley from Hillsborough (look in the Yellow Pages). He was a lovely man, very patient, and I had no driving experience at all when I began. He only charged £15 an hour. I really enjoyed learning to drive, and now when I go shoppng I can fill the boot with goodies, rather than only being able to buy what I can carry home!
