  1. Hi, Yes, I'm his younger brother (by two and a bit years). Yes he was very good at sport, he helped to put the school on the map. I think he was South Yorkshire Champion at 100 metres. He got to the grand final of the English schools championships. I think he came 6th. Sixth best in the country, not bad. Dean of disco
  2. Hi, Been reading this thread with great interest. I too went to Earl Marshal. I was there from 1977 to 1981. Great days! Some of the posters on this thread I do remember. I certainly know Biscuit! Since I have left, I have seen many changes in the school. They have knocked it (& Owler Brook) down and built Firvale school. Earl Marshal had a bad rep in the 90s but Firvale school is on the up. I'm now a science teacher but did my teaching practice at Firvale. Very enjoyable. I learnt alot. There were some great teachers at Earl Marshal. I was in Mr Wragg's, Mr Baggott's and Mr Thompson's forms duriing my time. Does anyone remember Mr Bancroft? I think he had the nickname of "Raffles". Also Mr Boron, the strict sergeant Major type, boy he could shout! Dean of Disco
  3. Hi, As many have stated, there were three Bradleys records shops in Sheffield. One on Fargate, one on Pinstone street (where the Greggs is now, I think) and one on Fargate. The other shop on Fargate was Vallances. This used be Canns. The Bradleys on Fargate had a downstairs part to it. Used to buy some of my singles and Lps from these places in the 70s and early 80s. 4. Hi tazman I remember those names. I went to Earl marshal and left in 1981. Diane, Beverley and Hazel were in my form at middle school (Whiteways) but I'm not sure if they were in my form at Earl Marshal. I don't think I've seen them since school. I'll drop you a PM tomorrow. Hi Trever, Had a look at that website and I can remember alot of those people. I've seen one or two of them over the years. Even though the bulk of them are a year below me, I might pop down to that event in the Summer. Dean of Disco (as seen on Channel 4)
  5. Hi Glad people enjoyed the return of Hot Pants at the city hall. It was was an excellent night. It's good to be back! I enjoyed DJing the event last night. It was good to see so many familiar faces. The venue is brighter in look, so the old darkness has gone. The big bar looked good and it seemed people got served ok. Not sure what has happened to the 3rd room. As for the beer prices, that is in the hands of city hall management. The queue was massive. When I got to the venue (9.45pm), the queue had well and truly started. I would had thought having tickets should have got you straight in. Due to demand, a number of people didn't get in. The venue was very busy and lively. Good to see many people having a good time. Long may it continue. Dean of Disco (as seen on Channel 4)
  6. Hi, Disco is one of my favourites styles of music. I have made a DJ career playing the stuff! There are many corkers out there. The thing is that a lot of it still sound fresh today. Many of todays dance and pop records owe a lot to disco records. The popularity is still there. One of the longest running nights in Sheffield, that I DJ at, is based on disco music. Disco produced some of the biggest selling records of the 70s and of all time. My current top ten all time faves (it changes all the time) 1. Trammps - Disco Inferno 2. Jackie Moore - This time baby 3. Two Man Sound - Que Tai America 4. GQ - Disco Nights 5. Machine - There but for the grace of god. 6. George Mccrae - Kiss me (The way I like it) 7. Fatback band - Backstrokin' 8. Donna Summer - Bad girls 9. Shalamar - Uptown Festival 10. Chic - Everybody dance The list is endless Dean of Disco
  7. Hi, Greasy Vera's van is on Swinton Street which is at the bottom of Pitsmoor Road near the junction of Mowbury st., Nursery St and Corporation st. I don't think it's open. I have driven past and not noticed open for a long time. The van is still there. I used to like the Cheggburgers that they did. Dean of Disco
  8. Hi, I remember the delights of the Raleigh Chopper. I had a rarer mark 1 version. This had an adjustable handle bars and a longer seat then the mark II. Mine was in orange. It also had a round gear knob unlike the mark II which had a T bar lever. It lacked the rear rack of the mark II. It was a great bike and the envy of many. Came off a few times over those years. I stopped riding it in the late 70s. Too my shame, it ending up in a skip. Great days! Dean of Disco
  9. Hi I remember and liked the Beat. I saw them at the Sheffield Lyceum when the venue put on bands in the 80s. I like their music alot. The 1st two albums are very good stuff. I also saw Bad Manners at the Lyceum. I enjoyed their albums as well. The Beat did spit into the Fine Young Cannibals and General Public. I understood they reformed for some gigs not so long ago. I have seen a number of the 2nd wave of ska bands. I remember seeing the Selector at the NMB in 1980. I won tickets in a competition in the Sheffield Star. I also Bad Manners at the Lyceum I saw the Specials at one of their last gigs in Rotherham, outdoor at Herringthorpe in 1981. Good stuff. I prefer original ska. My faves are the Skatalites and Prince Buster. Fave ska songs include Prince Busters "One Step Beyond" & "Al Capone" , Carlos Malcolm " Bonanza Ska" & Jimmy Cliff "King of Kings" Dean Of Disco
  10. Hi There are many great Luther Vandross songs. Check out, Gimme the reason, So amazing, I really didn't mean it, Searching and Glow of love (The last two he did when he sang with a group called Change) Dean of Disco
  11. Hi, I have heard this station. Good stuff. Another one you can listen to on the internet is this one, http://www.northernsoulradio.co.uk/ http://www.northernsoulradio.co.uk/shopzone.ram Dean of Disco
  12. Hi, It's a shame to see Rover go, But they did make some awful cars over the years. Being part of British Leyland, BL didn't help. The 70s was a big name in the British car industry. I've had a few BL/Rover cars. They all have been unreliable and/or crap. Best one was one of these. Nice looker & heavy to drive. It had part leather seats and the battery in the boot. It had a 'clapometer' style speedo and a cigar lighter. I had the 2 litre sc version. I also had a MG metro. Suspension went on that. I have had some BL cars as well. I had an Austin Maxi. What a bumper pile of ****e that was! The only good thing about it was that you could get a lot of stuff in it. I had an Austin Allegro. This had an square steering wheel. Grim. Two reasons why foreign cars have do well in the UK, are that they have been more reliable and better built. Dean of disco
  13. Hi, I too think it's a big shame that Fopp has stopped selling vinyl. I think it happened about a two months ago. I went in one week & they had loads of stuff, went in about 10 days later & most of it was gone. The first 2 Fopp shops were in Edinburgh. The first franchise shop was in Aberdeen. The Shop in Sheffield was the first franchise Fopp shop in Endland in 1996. Fopp bought the Sheffield branch out right in 1998. Then it was Lemmington Spa in 1998. I knew Darren at Fopp. He sold me loads of vinyl while he was there. The downside was that there were a lot of "tyre kickers", ie people who would listen to piles of vinyl & never buy. There were people who would ask them to save records then never come to pick them up. This is hardly surprising due to the rise of the DVD over the last few years. I bought a DVD player around 4 years ago & it cost me over £300. You can pick them up for less than £30. The dvd software is cheaper to buy with a huge selection. It also take up less space than vinyl. Vinyl sales peaked in the mid 70s. They went on a downward trend from then. The big turning point was around 1988 when cd sales matched vinyl sales. After that the decline was sharper. The people who kept vinyl alive were the DJs as dance music became more popular. Also collectotrs still bought new vinyl. But overall sales of vinyl dipped badly until around the mid 90s when it seemed to bottom out & rise again. In the DJ world, 12" sales have dipped in recent years. Dance music has not sold as well. Also the standard of DJ CD players has grown and the numbers of people using them. Two good things about a cd are that it's lightweight & you can get a lot of music on one. Having said all that, 7" singles are going from strength to strength with growth of over 57%. A lot of people like the collectability & style of these items. Vinyl Lp sales have also dipped as well but there still is a demand. I can't see that happening as more & more DJs are using Cd & other technology. A number of clubbers are not that bothered. They just want too be entertained. But will still be used by some. Amen to that. As a big buyer & collector of vinyl, there is still big action on this front. New and 2nd hand, in many different styles. The big collectable items are still vinyl. Dean of Disco
  14. Hi, I remember "Appointment with fear" on a Friday at 10.30pm in the 70s. It was on after the 10.00pm news on Yorkshire TV. The intro used to scare me. I either a) sat watching it scared out of my wits. b) Have my eyes shut. C) Hide behind the settee. Now that I'm much older, I wouldn't mind seeing it again. Dean of Disco
  15. Hi, At Whiteways Middle school in the 70s, we had Rivelin (Red), Loxley (Green), Don (Blue) & Sheaf (Yellow). I was in Loxley. It was great when we had sports day & football events. Loxley did very well. Dean of Disco
