  1. MadChef54 So glad you did respond. I have sent you a pm. I hope you are the Garbutt I am looking for and can help a bit with my family research.
  2. Jauntyone Sent you a pm. Hope you can help but no names sound familiar so far (except surname!) Regards Sandy
  3. This morning I received the death certificate for John Robert Garbutt. He was living at 28 Keswick Road, Millhouses when he died on 3rd December 1955. Does this ring any bells with anyone? Bearing in mind i'm not 100% sure this is THE John Robert Garbutt, but if anyone recalls this family in Millhouses then I would appreciate any more info (especially if he had a wife called May). Thanks again Sandy
  4. Thanks to everyone who has replied to my post. My next train of thought to try and find the GARBUTT family is to find a cemetery where they might be buried. Presuming they stayed at Little London Road until their deaths where would the most probable cemetery be? I think I may have found a death date for John Garbutt in 1955. I haven't received the certificate yet with exact date on but I am hoping it is him. I don't know when his wife May died but if I can find John's grave she may be buried with him. All I know so far is May Garbutt (nee Jewell) was born 1898/99 possibly in London/Kent. Married John Robert Garbutt in 1922 at St Paul's Church Norton Lees. I think John Garbutt was born in 1902 in Norton Lees. Any further help would be very much appreciated Sandy
  5. Wallbuilder Is Heeley Green a different part of Heeley 'cos my uncle remembers going to Heeley Green once. The actual address was 11 Little London Road. I don't know how long they lived there (that is the only address I have for them) but they were there during WWII years at least. Sandy
  6. Strix Thanks for the link - I have looked at it before but had no luck in finding people. It is a very interesting and informative site though. The problem with fairly recent family history is that not much info is on the internet so it means lots of trips to libraries etc. I will keep on plugging away at it in the hope that someone may remember the GARBUTTS of HEELEY! Thanks again Sandy
  7. Does anyone remember the Garbutt family from Little London Road, Heeley? There may be a Steven (Stephen) Garbutt born around 1949 who went to Meersbrook School. I would really like to contact him or any other Garbutt family members regarding my family history. Any help with this would be appreciated. Many thanks Sandy
  8. Thanks Rab1 I am hoping I can trace Steven (Stephen) Garbutt with that info. If anyone else might know him or where he might be now then PLEASE let me know - I desperately need to find more about my grandmother and he shuld be able to help me. Thanks again Sandy1
  9. I'm hoping someone will remember the Garbutt family who lived on Little London Road probably in the 40's & 50's. John and May Garbutt had a couple of boys (don't know their names) and it would be really nice to be able to contact them for help with my family tree. May Garbutt was my grandmother's sister and I know nothing else about their family before they married and moved here from London/Kent area. Hoping someone can help with this. Sandy
  10. Thanks retep I will give the LDS library a try one day. I looked at the library of historical directories site - I was engrossed for about an hour!! Sandy
  11. Thanks PT. All these little bits of info help to build up a picture of how life was back then. I remember the 2 up 2 down terraces as I lived in one but I hadn't heard of the back to back houses until recently. Sandy
  12. retep Is the Kelly Directory available online? I need to find a connection in Sheffield so would you mind looking for me please if you have a copy? I'm looking for a May Garbutt (married to John R Garbutt in 1924). She was a dressmaker but I don't know if she worked for herself or someone else. I need a connection with Little London Road, Heeley, to link them to my family. What is the LDS library like? Somehow, I feel a bit scared of going as I have only just started my research and don't know the protocol and exactly what I am looking for. Thanks Sandy
  13. My grandmother's name was Ethel Hampton (nee Jewell). She lived in Mexborough after marrying. I live in Doncaster so will have to make a visit to the library soon I think. As I don't know the area where Ethel & May were born I am finding it difficult to get even a birth date for them. If I could get the father's name from the marriage certificate I could get a little further maybe. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. Sandy
  14. I'm new to this forum but am hoping someone can help. My grandmother's sister May Jewell married a Sheffield lad and lived on Little London Road, Heeley in the 1930's & 40's. Her husband was called Harry (don't know surname). I have found a marriage for a May Jewel and John Garbutt in 1924 and was wondering if they were the same couple (Harry might have been a nickname or family name). Does anyone remember Little London Road at that time? I'm told they lived in back to back houses (they're probably not there any more). Does anyone have any old photos of that area? My problem is that I don't know anything about my grandmother except that she was born in London (somewhere!!) and she had this sister. I would really appreciate any help. Many thanks in advance Sandy
