  1. Sorry Hackey Lad I misunderstood, I thought this thread was about closure of DSA airport. My mistake I’ll try and repost it to the correct thread.
  2. Air transport is a constantly changing industry. Starting with the planes themselves the majority were getting bigger like the jumbo jets and then the huge Airbus double decker both with 4 engines. These relied on large numbers of people travelling to major hubs such as Heathrow, New York, Singapore and Sydney to name a few. People would then change flights to their regional hubs such as Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Belfast, Paris, And some other European cities. With the advent of the Dreamliner, and Airbus A350 for example these can operate on 2 engines for longer distances eg Heathrow to Perth and shortly Singapore to New York. Due to lower operating costs they can be profitable with fewer passengers so can fly direct to Manchester, Birmingham etc. from cities such as Dubai or Delhi or New York or Singapore. So now we can avoid the Heathrow’s of this world which should help start to grow more provincial airports. Last time I flew from Manchester to Singapore it was a nightmare to get there by train from Doncaster and was worse coming back by car via Woodhead. I would rather go via Heathrow because everything is tilted towards London (trains, motorways etc). all of this Northern Rail talk will be great if you want to go from Leeds/York to Manchester but useless for South York’s, Humberside, Notts Lincs and Derbys. Wizz Air pulling out of Doncaster just happened to coincide with them being allocated 15 new slots at Gatwick so all of their promises to grow at Doncaster were not fulfilled. Also they are still flying their East European flights every evening it was the Alicante type flights that were withdrawn. Tui are the main provider but how many of you knew that they already fly Dreamliners to Jamaica, Barbados, Cancun and Orlando from Doncaster. I have used this service and it’s brilliant but you really have to hunt for these destinations on their websites and some of their own shop staff aren’t too knowledgeable about them. Similarily there is an ongoing plan to build airships in the uk (seriously, look it up) and there is an order for 10 on the table. The existing base at Cardington is no longer suitable and Peel holdings will no doubt be aware that they are sat on a large area which could have a greater profit potential if the airport was closed and replaced by an airship factory, possibly employing several hundred skilled people. Wouldn’t they then look good in the publics eye. Just bear in mind that at the moment DSA is a business which needs to make a profit somehow for Peel Holdings. Perhaps this government might like to purchase it from them to create the rail link and support our national air transport strategy before selling it on to someone else other than a private company based in the Isle of Man (Read up on the uk tax implications of such a company)
  3. I bow to your memory regarding Susan Pearson. The other names I don’t remember other than the already mentioned (Avril) Bellinger from Chippinghouse road. I also noticed a thread yesterday, about Sharrow Lane School which included mention of St John’s Cubs/Scouts which I also remember going to although I struggle to remember any names. I do remember taking part in a gang show singing a song called “De Camptown Races” wearing a pair of white gloves, straw hat and made up with dark makeup. My how times have changed (hopefully for the better)
  4. Not been on this site myself for some time now (time flies when your having fun) but just seen your last post. I don’t have any further info on the names you mentioned but can remember Susan Pearson from Sharrow Lane Infants and Juniors. Also would add that I thought she lived on Mount Pleasant Road something about number 66 rings a bell. Just around the corner at Abbeydale Road was Laura think it was a shop on the corner. Then at Abbeydale Road was Richard at the Laundry. Seem to think there was a girl called Helen Askham also lived in that area and Avril Bellinger further along at Chippinghouse road. Of the same era (1958-61)was Barbara Nicholson (Cecil Square)and a girl from Highfield Place , Christine ???? Used to smoke Park Drive with them amongst some garages on Sharrow Street. We must have been about 10 or 11 maybe younger. Further up just off Sharrow Lane was Paul Bloomer and Stuart Mosely on Franklin Street then Stuart Levick think Franklin Street or Clubgarden Road. Apart from Richard I have not seen or heard of any of them since 1961 when we all changed schools.
  5. There should be a sticker with a phone number on it detailing who to contact regarding the machine. They will send a guy out to check the machine and will then inform your bank. The fraud department of the bank will then be in contact with you. Happened to me recently and I stopped others from using it. Went to my car to get my phone and someone else used it and because I asked them how much they had withdrawn I could quote all this info to the bank and they stopped treating me as a con artist. The money was refunded to my account immediately
  6. Or for the real thing log onto the Doncaster Racecourse Web site. I think he is appearing in August
  7. Would that be the Derby match when both teams were in Div3. Think that was about 71 or 72.
  8. Ever since i moved to a house with a woodburner I have not bought any wood(6 years). If you see some wood dumped in a laybye stash it in the boot.See a skip on the road side where building works are taking place, ask to take it. It will mean the person who is paying for the skip might need to order fewer skips. I was down the wholesale markets not long ago and they have loads of cheap thin wood in the form of crates. Just ask the people in the stores before taking it.
  9. Use the link below to check if you and/or any other car has a valid MOT. Very useful if you are looking to buy a car and the owner says he can't find the MOT but will send it on. http://www.gov.uk/check-mot-status
  10. Do we assume that the USA is applying pressure on Europe to admit Turkey as a) they have miltary bases there and b) if Europe doesn't admit them then maybe Russia might want to offer the hand of friendship. Not quite sure what we have in common with Turkey to want to be part of the same trading block as them but that also applies to countries like Bulgaria, Romania etc.
  11. Personally I would get your son to ask how his friends parents are getting on. I certainly would not take the kids word for his parents situation alone, as kids are sometimes known for thinking on their feet when suddenly tasked with being held responsible for a breakage and having to pay for it. He did deny (lie about it possibly) for the first two weeks.
  12. Have you seen the values of classic cars recently. Like all investments you have to know and understand the market but there have been some tremendous gains made over the last few years.
  13. So can we no longer call people from the USA "Yanks" (Short for yankee doodle dandies I believe) How about Frogs for the French People. They do eat the legs after all. I was once Called "Roast beef" by an irate French Person. Should I be offended? Should I refrain from referring , to people from Sweden as Swedes as these are after all vegetables.
  14. Hopefully this case will be referred up to the court of appeal like some of the other cases where there was a soft sentence. ---------- Post added 27-02-2016 at 10:19 ---------- There is a simple rule known as the 80/20 rule, which you can apply to most things in life. There are obviously variants to this rule such as at one point only 2% of the population went to university or some stupidly high amount of Scotland is owned by less than 10 people but generally look around and it will apply to most things. You can try and vary it but you will never remove it
  15. As an apprentice gasfitter from 66-70, the day school element of the training was carried out at Salmon Pastures School and then at Coleridge Road School. This lasted until Shirecliffe college was opened. Think it was probably about 67 or 68, all a rather long time ago.
