Did you live on the Manor Estate in the 1930s - 50s?
mikeG replied to Albert T Smith's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
I knew a Carol Inglis who lived on Fitzhubert way back in 1960. -
I passed in 1954, as did all other 51 pupils in J4S at Lydgate. We had a good teacher - Mr Savile.

Gloria Davis - about 1965 - I think.

Anybody On Here Who Worked In Rolling Mills In The 70s
mikeG replied to Appolo's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
My Dad, Eric George worked at Shepcote Lane Rolling Mills as Hot and Cold Rolling Mill Manager 1947-1972. Geoff Edwards was his boss. I worked there as a computer programmer 1971-2. My boss was Ron Stevens. -
Do you remember Rowlinson Technical in the 60's
mikeG replied to artisan's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Friend of mine, Brian Hill went there a few years earlier, 1954-1960. -
I'm halfway through your book Jack Very enjoyable read. I used to work in Barclays Bank on Middlewood Road 1960-62 - just round the corner from where you were living. We both went to King Edwards and knew HTRT who taught Maths if I remember correctly.

What Is The First Major News Story You Remember?
mikeG replied to Reecedouglas1's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
A ship broke down in the English Channel. I think it was the Flying Enterprise. 1952. Captain Carlsen was the last man to be taken off. -
Our neighbours in Crosspool late 50's early 1960's were Mr & Mrs Dunstan (could have been Eric). I do know that one of them (probably Mrs) was related to Albert Quixall.

Do You Think Sheffield's Identity Has Changed?
mikeG replied to shannon.g's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
I lived in Sheffield 1947-72 so I am out of touch but my father worked at Shepcote Lane Rolling Mills for 25 years and I remember the drive from Crosspool to Tinsley. Lots of factories - mainly steel - but when I went back 10 years ago it was a different place. SLRM was a housing estate and where I lived at the top of Stephen Hill Rd. - a new house has been built in the garden. I tried driving through the city but got stuck in taxis/buses only lane. I feel connected to the city because I was brought up there but the city as it was (is not there) 3 words. I worked at Barclays Bank, Hillsborough and the Moor. I opened sub-branches at Meadowhead and Banner Cross. Visited branches at Fitzalan Square and Glossop Rd but the whole scene is not there any more. -
Agree. We wont.

Went there for a meal about 1970. I used to work on Shepcote Lane so I hadn't far to travel.
