  1. Hi Dido I would be very interested in seeing any old photos of Grimethorpe from that era as I lived at 10 Upwell Lane from 56 to 66 and have no photos at all from that time. I would really like to show my kids ( 25 and 26 ) strange names I know, what it was like in those days. Walking out on to the main pavement to go to the outside lavvy all those sort of things that you miss especially when it was lashing down!!!! Regards Jack
  2. I remember being in the Boys Brigade at the Weslyan Reform Chapel in Grimesthorpe although not sure what age I was then. I do remember the big Whitsun parades that used to happen though. Must have been early sixties then.
  3. Hi Mazda Good to know you remember our Carol and yes I too remember being fed raw sausage by my dad!!! I think that he may have had a bit of gypsy in him as he was always coming up with exotic dishes like tripe and onions, pigs trotters etc. Still remember when times were hard him sending me to the butchers for bones for our dog...... only thing is we never had a dog!! what's worse is the butcher knew we never had a dog but never let on bless him!!! If you can give me your name I will remember you to Carol when I ring her next. All the best Jack
  4. Hi Mazda Yes I surely have. Carol is 58 now and is living in Oughtibridge with her other half Alan. Still see her though not as much as we should do as I live down in Essex and have done for the past 25 years or so. My other sis Eileen resides in the States with all her family around her. Everyone is well. Regards Jack
  5. Hello Ranger I think I remember you from Earl Marshal school you were two years in front of me. We have something in common that despite being dragged up in our early years we both became police officers. I have had to retire now having served over 21 years with Essex Police and before that 7 years in the Royal Navy. Used to hang around with Steve Goodall and Derek Booth who lived near you. All the best Jack Bowler
  6. Blimey you lot have good memories. I too remember Derek Wilks and co. Derek's younger brother Mick was and is a good mate of mine, we all attended the Earl Marshall re-union some four years ago in the Firth Park Hotel, first time I had met Mick and all the boys and girls for over thirty years. what a great night. We got hold of Keith and Trevor Lemm who ran the Grimesthorpe Boys Club for who we all played football and cricket for. As for "Spot" I remember him when I was a kid clumping some bloke on the steps of the Sheffield Arms, jackets off and all that, very civilised not pint pots at twenty paces as it would be now!!!!! I am 50 now and still have some very fond memories of the Beehive and Bowling Green sitting outside with vimto and crisps. I understand it's nearly all gone now, shame really.
  7. I lived at 68 Newstead Way Hackenthorpe from 71-74 with the Parker family having moved from Park Hill flats. My time spent with my sis and brother in law was brilliant and I remember loads of good people from that area at that time. Most weekends were spent up the Frecheville and Birley Moor pub and the one opposite which became part of a golf club the Fairway I think it was called. I joined the Royal Navy from there in 73 and we had a leaving do at the Manor House down the road can't remember the name of it if anybody can help Lord of the Manor for the evening and all that. Went out with several girls from Hackenthorpe all of whom I have fond memories of. Long walks to the Harrow pub which had a disco type thing going in the 70's and even longer walks down to the Forge where Roger Moffat used to drink. By the way at my wedding in 78 he sent a personalised Radio Hallam message to all our family as my sis used to get him ****** in the Bluebell before and after he went on air, I think it then became Crazy Daisy's or something like that. Great site this, living in a new town Basildon Essex they don't have things like this to talk about. Best wishes to all in Hackenthorpe Jack Bowler
  8. I had the pleasure of living in the Park Hill flats 102 Lord Row as I recall it being pushed in there in 1971 from Pitsmoor. It was without a doubt the most miserable place I had been some six floors up with the lift sometimes working!!! I joined the Royal Navy two years later to escape at the tender age of 16 and thought the place had been bulldozed years ago. Any attempt to rebuild or recreate the "atmos" should be treated with the contempt it deserves. I would like to bet that the people who designed it had nothing in common with the proper Sheffield people who lived on council estates before this sort of crap was built. Another fine example of this was the Kelvin flats where my brother in law had the pub opposite. I'll never forget coming home on leave from the Lebanon in 76 only to see a fridge come hurtling out of one of the balconies there. Thought I was back in the Middle East for a minute!!! No stick ya' high rise flats!!!!! Jack Bowler
  9. As a kid in the early sixties I remember going into the Banner shop in the Wicker not far from the bridge. I recall some sort of funny money tokens being used shaped not unlike old threepenny bits, being placed in air tubes and whizzed around the shop, a bit like Tesco do nowadays but not half as much fun to watch as they were then. I hope this really did happen and is not a figment of my imagination or the effects of drinking home made Russian wine whilst in the Royal Navy!!! Anyone else remember BANNERS? Jack Bowler
  10. Knew where it was but never allowed in as my older sister Carol went in there and it wasn't cool to have your younger brother hanging around but yes I remember Albert Parr rowing with everyone tell them to eff off for no apparant reason!!!
  11. I went to Grimesthorpe Junior starting about 1963 and remember Mr. Jeremy the school crossing man. He used to stand outside the school bang adjacent to the outdoor boys toilet opposite the Grimesthorpe club, and some lads tried to pee over the wall on to his hat as I recall......bad lads!!!! A great little school though, sports days were a hoot, traipsing all the way up Wincobank Hill with a load of hockey sticks and balls and hoops 'cos that was the nearest playing field!! Remember the public baths in Sutherland Road we all went to with the changing stalls situated next to the pool, never a dry foot to be seen. Jack Bowler aged 50 and a quarter.
  12. Yep I come from Grimesthorpe. We used to live at 10 Upwell Lane from 56 to the late 60's. My mum and dad were Violet and Jack Bowler and I have two sisters Carol and Eileen. As I recall it the "cottages" we lived in were two up, two down, no indoor bathroom or toilet and access to the outside row of lavvies were via the main footpath running alongside the 48 bus route!! Living next door were the Barretts, Ron Madge Steve and Julie. Other names of neighbours I remember were Percy Cook who lived with his mum, Tom and Annie Waldren. Across the road were the ROOM family, Les and Jean and their TEN kids I believe. This is where Albert Parr the famous Star Walker lodged in the attic and was given a pint and a bar of soap every time he completed the Star Walk.......yes we all knew he was given lifts around the circuit but it didn't matter. The Beehive pub was on our side of the street and we were sandwiched between that and the Bowling Green pub, which used to have a great stone roller on the used green and as kids we were always getting chased off for attempting to "log roll" on the rollers, or swinging on the big green gates of the pub. I remember the gennel which ran down to the dyke with the old gas lamp at the corner of it, we could swing from the top of the gas lamp over the glass topped wall of the Bowling Green onto the field behind to play football. I went to Grimesthorpe Junior and then onto the infamous Earl Marshall with all my mates apart from the odd one or two who managed to pass the 11 plus and do a bit better. About 4 years ago we organised an Earl Marshall reunion which was well attended at the Firth Park Hotel which was ironic as most of us hadn't been in there since we were 15 or 16!!!! I have many happy memories of my short time in Grimesthorpe, the Boys Club in particular run brilliantly by Trevor and Keith LEMM who both should have been knighted for their efforts to keep us all out of trouble. I did alright though 7 years in the Royal Navy followed by another 21 as a policeman so it turned out okay in the end. Would really like to hear from anyone who recalls Grimesthorpe from those days. Forgot about COLLINS'S SWAP SHOP till I read about it on a posting, I too bought some right old crap from there, but managed to pinch a few comics as well to even things out a bit!!!! Firth Park, Wincobank Hill, Jimmy Childs' yard, Page Hall, Steely's, The Broadway club all good memories. All the best Jack Bowler:D
