  1. Wasnt Bassetts alsorts in Beulah Road somewhere near to Newboulds (Sunblest) and Tizer pop , does anyone remember Davys pie manufacturer, they were bought out by our old friend Garfield Weston , it was a Sheffield company , we were supposed to be bread men but sold everything else , Burtons Biscuits , Wagon wheels , Jammy dodgers, even Brawn (ugh). That was a bit dodgy after a few days in the van , nice to remember , ex Bread man Newboulds Bradford.
  2. Never a problem in Halifax night-clubs , the steps up to the bar area were a bit steep after 11-00 , and my mates stick was a problem at times , we were always welcome , both 70 plus.
  3. Hi Tarquin . did your Doc prescribe a Statin to help with your Diabetes , a side effect of these is often itching , i certainly get itching which i put down to these , i have type 2 diabetes ..pete
  4. Thanks for all replys to my fond memories of Sheffield in the 50s/60s, wish i could remember the name of the shop on Beaulah Road , it was a gold mine , dishing sandwiches of all description out of a side door they were so busy , to the then employees of Bassetts . from there i went to Walkley , a shop called Dudsons in Whitehouse Lane (dont forget this is in the late fifties) and then on to Stannington Road , shops all the way up grocers and off licences , one private old cottage up Stannington Road an old couple called Mr & Mrs Booth , they sold a few cigs , and then a fish cake and chips with my cheese sandwiches what a meal in cold weather , all a long time ago i am 69 now and my cig delivery days are over ...thank you Sheffield ....a Bradford lad ..
  5. nearly 50 years ago i was a delivery man for a cigarette wholesaler in Bradford ,and Sheffield was my main area , i seem to remember that Park Drive was the most popular cig in that area , i thing Gallaghers had a branch somewhere in Parsons Cross area , does my memory serve me correct ? Every shop bought loads of Park Drive , whilst in Bradford , Woodbines were the top seller , i was told by my boss that Woodbines in the 50s were the fifth biggest seller in the world (where are they now). One of my top customers was a shop in Beaulah Road near to Bassetts they bought loads of gear it was a gold mine ,i remember when it was the morning break time dozens swarmed out of Bassetts to this particular shop to buy sandwiches of all description , as far as i remember they used either a window at the side or the back door . Good job there wasnt smoking regulations then , folk would have gone mad , Park Drive was a lovely cig , i smoked hundreds and am still here although now a none smoker . Happy Sheffield days .....Pete.
  6. I worked at Newboulds Dick Lane Bradford for several years in the late 50/60s we had 100 vans Ford Thames 4Ds and Ford Pilots . I think Scottie at Sheffield branch was ex Bradford , i remember the lovely pork and egg pies from Davys Sheffield , we used to take a full one into the pub after work on a Friday night and share it with the locals , talk about early start my mate and me were walking up the yard at 4-00 christmas eve morning coming towards us was Leonard Chambers area sales manager who nearly lived there he put so many hours in , his remark "where have you been till this time" he was knicknamed "slick" . The hours we put in on the bread job sometimes 15 hours a day , could you see guys doing that nowadays, i enjoyed every minute 70 calls a day first one 5-30 in the wholesale green market in Bradford . Supervisors put in more hours than us ...it was a great time ...would do it again ..halcyon days . Peter 35 journey.
  7. yeh last time i was in the local social club , there was a singer belching out "The green green grass of home " to 18 people , halfway through it was time to make our getaway , as we approached the door he spotted us and said mind your heads as you go out lads , most embarrasing . Most of the old political clubs seem to be social clubs now , those that excist.. nearly 50 years ago my first call in Sheffield from Bradford was Wadsley Bridge WMC , it was on a dual carriageway on the right approaching Sheffield , stood in its own grounds as i remember , it was a beautiful big club , trams were still running in those days , i think my memory serves me right , did that same road continue to Penistone Road , Bassetts on Beulah Road , Sunblest Bakery (John Newboulds) on the left , Daniel Doncasters steel works , all calls of mine , are they still there please ....
  8. i agree entirely with GOLDENFLEECE , i go in a WMC on a saturday night for an hour , you know exactly who will come in and at what time , they sit in the same seats drink the same amount , talk about the same old stuff , play bingo and listen to some dead singer belching out the same old neil diamond stuff as all the other turns from the previous weeks , think i will throw a rope over a tree next time owts better than that...
  9. cakes in Bradford , no cod just haddock , in Keighley or Halifax they are sandwiches or scones . no cod in west yorkshire , plain old haddock i used to get a cake and chips at a fish shop in Stannington Road 50 years ago whilst delivering in Sheffield , beautiful with cheese sandwiches , oh halcyon days .
  10. I remember Firth Park from 1958/9 time , i was a delivery man for a wholesale tobacconist in Bradford , i think the route i took was Wadsley Bridge WMC, Parsons Cross, Pitsmoor, then Firth Park , the only shop i did was a coffeee bar called Firvale Creamery , (is my memory correct) it was on the main road and i think trams were running in those days , you certainly got a blasting if you parked on the tram lines and one came , happy days in Sheffield , i also delivered to an old cinema in Duke Street ? near to City road , then up City Road past a large cemetery , up to Stradbroke Road and then Swallow nest ...apologies if confused its 50 years ago. all the best ...A Bradford lad ....
