  1. Just a guess , but as dp59 was enquiring about the Sheffield Cricket league records then perhaps the league he or she was "on about" might have been the Sheffield Cricket League. Many years ago due to dwindling numbers the league amalgamated to become what I think became the Sheffield and Doncaster Alliance League . Sadly this league also folded. In 1987 Lee Hirst won the averages with 45.14 in the Sheffield Midweek league for Exchange. I think the Exchange cricket team may well have folded before the Sheffield League did. I do not know him personally but believe he was also a pro footballer and his dad was a well known and talented football player. I cannot answer if Lee's record still stands but Jake Weatherald managed 270 for Barnsley Woolley Miners in August 2022 in the Yorkshire south Premier cricket league.. As he has played for South Australia and Adelaide Strikers it is not surprising he can knock out so many runs at the nice but small Whiston PC ground.
  2. I cannot remember Mr Mackay being called anything other than "Jock" however after so many years one's memories can be somewhat clouded. I do recall faking a note to be excused from PE as I was supposedly under the weather. I really wanted to listen to the test match on my trannie. In my youth trannie meant transistor radio but nowadays means something entirely different. After being excused I rather stupidly sprinted away and Jock summoned me back with the comment , " There's nothing wrong wi you laddie. Get your PE kit on. " Slasher was the nickname for Ken Mackay an Aussie cricketer.

  4. I do not live there. The occupant tells me he has tried removing with white vinegar however the mould reappears. it is a bedroom window. Thanks everybody for the help and suggestions.
  5. Are there any recommendations for a company that can cure recurring mould around a bedroom window please?
  6. Good morning Steve. I think it might be Russell Davey who you have written about. Sadly both he and Ted Bear, mentioned in another post, passed away several years ago.
  7. I remember Terry Parkin . Before he went to Intake sports club he was the steward at the AEU club on Stanley Street. I think he played football in the Sheffield and District midweek league for Central Thursday FC . I think he later married Pat Nolan's niece. Pat wa s then the AEU club secretary according to a previous post. When my dad used to take me into the AEU club I always remember Terry was and I hope still is a lovely man.
  8. Had the same email as alandrea0 stating unable to take payment for tv licence. Also had a call from a company named House Guard . They knew I had had cavity wall insulation installed a few years ago. They knew this because they have bought a list of people who had done so. They andI I are aware this has caused damp in some properties . The call came from a spoofed Sheffield number. House guard is in Bournemouth. they asked would I like their surveyor to inspect for damp. I agreed. he arrived and professed to be a surveyor NOT a salesman . " We are working with the government" he stated . The government is offering subsidies to rectify damp caused by cavity wall installations. I am aware that poorly or wrongly installed cavity insulation may cause damp. So the surveyor " not a salesman " gets out his little protimeter ( damp meter) and proceeds to tell me any reading above 5 and you have got damp. Well what a surprise the first reading in my living room was 15 . Second room 12. At this stage I told him I know there is some efflorescence on one of the external walls. Efflorescence is just the techical name for the white powdering deposits of salts on the outside of brickwork. He did not have clue what I meant when i mentioned efflorescence. Well he was kindhearted because he then phoned his office to find out it would cost me only £ 3000 to cure the rising damp I don't have and it was only £ 3000 as his company were getting a £ 1000 from the government to reduce the cost.
  9. Log on to the BFI ( British Film Institute ) website . Wings of Mystery filmed in Parkwood Springs and ESC. There are also some documentaries including New Towns for Old and also Hook Line and Sheffield.
  10. Hello Jim in Perth . Is there a chance the inscription on the cricket medal is N and D CL, rather than N and O CL. If so it may be from the now defunct Norton and District Cricket league.
  11. Look for Don Morris [ alias Mopsey] on Facebook. Top lad , top Northern soul DJ.
  12. You can logon to the BFI ( British Film Institute) site and search free fims. There are a number of films about Sheffield including Hook Line and Sheffield and the fascinating " New Towns for Old."
