  1. My 17 year old cat has just in last 10 days been diagnosed with Diabetes. Additionally he has also been on Vidalta for Thyroid for 3 years, and then been on Renal tablets for last 6 months. He is a very tough old bean but this one has shook him a bit. Lost lots of weight etc. Have had a double app at vets who went through everything with us, his blood glucose was 29 (normal between 8 -13 apparently) at first. After 7 days on 2 units of insulin his glucose was 13.7, but its a complete nightmare getting it all right. Normally he has a huge appetite but prone to be being finicky. Now he is supposed to have renal food (dislikes this) but as he now MUST eat before he has his insulin, its a complete nightmare, getting him to eat on demand. He is back at vets on Wed night, so I can ask them this, but it would be nice to have some feedback from anyone who actually has a diabetic cat, or even one with other complications. (a) How exact is the 12 hours between injections??? I mean does 30 minutes either side matter? We have been told so. The Feline Diabetes website is enough to freak you out! (b) how much is ENOUGH when quantifying the amount of food he needs before the injection?? Any hints/tips/comments would be much appreciated. Thanks.
  2. bit of a delayed response here, but if the random meowing is combined with "odd" toilet behaviour, it could be cystitus. My 17 year old cat was yeowking like a stuck pig, but also scratching in corners and trying to wee at same time, we whipped her to vets and she had cystitus, this has happened twice in 12 months - just a thought...
  3. I'll see what our vet says on Friday, she didn't have any dry food in and my girl also loves her crunchy biscuits, despite having almost all her teeth out due to gingivitus about 3 years ago! this is when you realise that domestic cats can't really be THAT related to big cats - can you imagine Mr Lion/Leopard/Panther/Tiger saying "um don't fancy that deer/zebra whatever today am bloody fed up with it, will just wait whilst something better comes along"???!!! Centuries of breeding or however domestic cats are related obviously removed that particular "I want food whatever form it comes in" and replaced it with a "you want me to eat WHAT?" gene!!! ha ha. If my girl realises prawns are an option then the Royal Canin can go whistle - thus the reason why am only putting a tiny bit in... goes a long way hopefully - that is if she ain't picking em all out!
  4. well I assume vet will give me a prescription so I can buy online. I will see how it goes. The bill on Friday was the last thing on my mind, but going from experience the vets prices will be massively higher. The vidalta prices from the vets are almost double to the prices I buy online for - I just get prescription from vets. I just want to get her some of everything so she has the variety- its bad enough with normal catfood, what they like one week - they don't like a month later!! normal cat behaviour and all that!
  5. Hi Gingers/Medusa Thanks both for your feedback, i guess as this is the first week I will just wait and see how she goes on and see if she has gained weight on Friday. She is booked in Friday at vets to see how she has gone on. I cooked her some white fish last night and put a spoonful in with her kidney food and she ate some of that - and then this morning she ate the scabby leftovers (which ordinarily she wouldn't even condenscend to touch after all that time!) before I got chance to clean the bowl up and put new down! you gotta love cats eh? Anyway, the odd prawns seem to be getting her to eat although not at her usual level. I noticed another post yesterday about toileting whereby a cat on renal food ended up having lactolose to help it toilet. Our Tinky goes outside, so not sure if I now should be watchign to see if she is doing her numbers 2's OK??? I am going to pop to the petfood shop and suss out the different varieties as she eats both wet and dry food and does love her biccies, am just giving her the only stuff the vet had which is Royal Canin at the moment.
  6. Hi All Further to my post last week about "lethargic" cat, I took my female cat (18.5 years old) to vets just in case and, as I suspected, there was a problem. She has kidney disease. Vet has put her on half a renal tablet per day and special diet food. Bit conflicted about the diet though. My cat is in otherwise good health, as have caught her fairly quickly she has only lost a little weight, but obviously felt very poorly. Vets also gave her 5 days of antibiotics just in case. That was Friday night. On Sunday night, for the first time in about 8 days, she came downstairs out of her bed, to go into garden and look for meece (her favourite pastime) and also then came in for her usual nighttime televiewing/cuddle time (usually about 3 hours - so clearly she felt better already. She normally eats for England, about 2 full pouches + treats per day. In past 8 days not exactly off her food, but would only eat if we put it in front of her like she couldn't be bothered. Vet made a very big point about "normal" cat food being a no-no and certainly no treats by way of meat, only white fish or chicken if absolutely critical and could be mixed in with food to try make her eat the special renal food. BUT she then went on to say basically you can give her normal food but her kidneys won't be able to process it and eventually you will be cutting short her life - which if carefully monitored could be 2 years. So - read a few threads on forum - I know its early days yet but she is not currently on "danger list" or at least doesn't seem so. over the weekend she has eaten the food, but only at say about 3/4 a pouch a day (guidelines say 1-2 pouches) although vet emphasised this was supposed to be high density thus less food needed.... but basically she is eating bits but hardly enthusiastic about it. This morning I chopped about 4 prawns into the food and for the first time she wolfed the whole bowl. Any ideas anyone? I have seen the posts about quality of life/versus following letter of vets law - but neither do I want to give her something which is actually going to reduce her life. We aren't (hopefully) anywhere near the stage where she is on deaths door or anything... Cheers
  7. have booked her into vets tonight, best to be on the safeside I think. She is just not herself - if she has miraculously picked up when i get home tonight then I might change, but otherwise she is off to see her favourite (not) vet!!
  8. thanks for the response. I will see how she is tonight when I get home - as its a bit cooler today - and if no different I will get her straight into vets for a check up.
  9. I wondered if anyone is experiencing problems with their cats due to the hot weather? Sods law - I took my little girl (18 now) for her quarterly vets check up (she is on 25mg of Vidalta for her thyroid) on Friday. We have had a few months of up and down as previously she was only on 15mg, but after various bloods it needed to go up to 25mgs (3 months ago). Anyway, vet said he is now happy she is on the right dose, her heart rate was the best it had been (160) and she had put a bit of weight on - she seemed happy and no problems. that was Friday. By Monday she was behaving like a wet rag. Basically never moved from morning to night from her bed, would eat and drink only if we took food to her - was spitting out her tablets (usually takes them no prob). Normally even though she does sleep a lot (tablets), she is always in garden at night on meece watching duty - even catches them, always eats her food. Am I over-reacting?? Is this the weather? I was going to give her until tomorrow and then take her into vets. Incidentally my other male cat is a bit mopey due to weather but otherwise unaffected?? Anybody's input would be appreciated. Many thanks.
  10. I spose it depends on your cat. Operating on elderly cats is not always ideal. Certainly my vets never offered me that option. I was very worried about giving them tablets in a stress free manner. However we discovered "wafer thin chicken". Every night at 7 pm we shake their tablet box and they come trotting in expecting a treat. Which is their tablets wrapped in a small piece of wafer thin chicken. Yumee they love it. I know not all cats so easy to please but its worth a try, before we hit on the chicken, we had tried butter, tuna, can't crush them, so was eternally happy they now take it. Force feeding them tablets every day for rest of their lives was not something I was looking forward to!
  11. Hi Michael My 16 year old cats both of them, have now been on Vidalta since my last post on August 2006, however both on different milligrams. My girl cat settled down almost immediately on the same dose of 15mgs x 1 tab. However my male cats weight fluctuated like a yo yo for some months before they got the dosage just right - so he went from being manic feed me feed me feed me behaviour to being like a sloth. He is now on 2 x 10 mill tabs a day and has calmed down dramatically. I think the tablets do have that effect to start with as it balances the thyroid, I do recall it made my two sleep a lot (more!) at first. I am no expert, but perhaps give it a little longer - if he is still not eating (or can't be tempted with treats) and you are concerned re his weight loss, then bob him back to vets and they will probably change the dose... hope this helps. I think its worth perserving, a friend of mine took her cat off the tablets as she was "borderline" thyroid, ended up getting glaucoma in her eyes and going temporarily blind because of it, so sure you are doing the right thing by him.
  12. Hi Mr P It would appear that everything is working normally but what I am trying to establish is why the light is on when everything else is off? Not sure of make and model... sorry. Its a back boiler behind a gas fire, ie its very old! Cheers
  13. Sorry guys - can't for the life of me find out how to put a new thread on this section - there is no button for Start Topic for me?? Basically I have the following question about timers on boilers - can anyone help - or tell me how come I can't post a new thread? We have a problem with our Heating/hot water time control on our boiler (EMP2 Mechanical Time Control). When everything appears to be off (ie hotwater and heating is off) the LED light alongside the central heating switch is on – is this a problem? Ie what is happening and is it a problem we need to get investigated? Does anyone know? Many thanks.
  14. Hi Berlingo, The prescription thing was sorted out long ago, but in answer to your question my vet now charges me £5 for printing out a prescription - on to top of the normal fee every 3 months for a check up - which apparently by law they have to do - they can't just re-issue a prescription without seeing the animal - which I guess makes sense.
  15. PS Purple Cow, although my cats take the tablets no problem when wrapped up in a little piece of wafer thin chicken, thats a great idea with the marmite, never heard of that idea of letting it dry etc - am gonna try that and see what happens, always helpful to have a standby.
