my uncles did this a few week back and with him been techincally minded decided to have a go himself after taking the case off all he did was clean the laser and it worked fine. you should try a normal disc in the ps3 before buying anything (NOT BLUE-RAY) maybe a cd or something if that works in the playstation the all you need to do is clean the laser if not the rest of the suggestions may be right above
