  1. My first experience of using Sheffield City Libraries was joining Attercliffe Branch Library whilst living on Liverpool St & then Swallow St. I loved reading and was in there at every given opportunity, I was a 'Library Helper' & was in my elements, stamping books tidying stock etc. When I attended Park House Comp. at Tinsley, I (along with a couple of friends) made ourselves useful by volunteering at Tinsley Primary School, organising their school library and on leaving school it was obvious where I intended to spend my working life ...... Yep, my first job was at Parson Cross Library in 1973. What happy memories but boy, how different from the Libraries I left 33 years later ....... Writing tickets, for the old 'Browne' system (1 ticket per book), with nib pen & inkwell, following an example of the alphabet made out by the Librarian. Having wooden blocks on the shelves where 'risque' books would have been (the books kept under the counter) 'Call Booking' where the junior members of staff had to make home visits to try and recover overdue books (Deep Joy), I have worked at most the Branch Libraries, if not as a permanent member of staff then certainly working as relief. So many memories *sigh*
  2. you could try Sheffield Indexers http://www.sheffieldindexers.com/SheffieldIndexersSiteMap_Index.html a mine of information ......

  5. Lordy Lordy, decided to check the Forum (not checked it for quite a while). I live in Ecclesfield & this thread caught my eye ..... after reading all the comments I now realise why I don't bother coming on as much It's getting worse, like kids squabbling in the playground!!! Sincerely hope the lady in question is on the mend ............
  6. there is a group on Facebook Darnall & Attercliffe, back in the good old days, a trip down memory lane ..... They have an album of (12) pics of the inside of Attercliffe baths ......
  7. Have just been watching Dunkirk, seen it umpteen times but never tire of it ..... My Dad was in the Yorks & Lancs regiment & they were used as extras in it. Just wondered how many other SF members watch it to see their loved ones (my Dad passed away in 1995) Doesn't matter how many times I watch it, I still have the tissues at the ready We lived at Attercliffe at the time & know there must have been other local blokes in it?
  8. http://www.grahamplumbersmerchant.co.uk/services/online-literature/ Grahams sell cast iron guttering, don't have to be trade to purchase from them. I find them very obliging and very reasonable ..................
  9. was the shop you mention called Kitters? can remember that corner being called 'Kitters Corner' ...........
  10. Just wondered if you were related to Mr Stewart (first aider at Sandersons) who lived over our wall in Liverpool St, a lovely gentleman who assisted my mum. She had banged her leg at home & when he saw her hobbling suspected a fracture, treat it at his house & said she would have no further trouble from it (and she didn't). Oh to have those times back when folk looked out for each other & were so neighbourly ...... also Alwyn who had a son David? Gawd that's got the old grey matter going .......
  11. There are a list of who lived on Clay Street in 63/64 (and surrounding streets) in Ann Sapcote's 'My Family & Other Morticians - & other stories from off The Common' ISBN 9780956364951 - I was born on Liverpool Street before moving onto Swallow Street, my Dad was born on Clay Street number 105. The book by Ann is a sequel to 'Once Around The Lump' both fascinating reads .......
  12. good answer yeah I understand where ya coming from ta ..............
  13. we have a party booked at a local pubs function room tomorrow, is it unreasonable to have expected them to have made an effort to have cleared the car park. It hasn't been touched at all I can see it's going to be a nightmare, both parking there & even crossing it to get into the place ........
