  1. Parades, picnics and fireworks!!! Have a beer, kick back and enjoy your day!
  2. I attended Granville in the fall of 1982 and was in TD1W. Thinking back, I can only remember the names of a couple teachers: Mr. Button and Mr. Eden. As far as classmates, I was good friends with Nigel Scot and dated a woman with pink hair a couple of times named Lynn Whitehorne who was studying to be a hairdresser. Since 30 years have passed, unfortunately the names of others elude me. I spent most of my time of course on the north campus and would venture across the sky bridge for the occasional lunch. Most of the time we would go to the Chippe across from the Poly for pasties and mushy pea curry chips for 50p and then pop into the Crucible for a pint. Other days we would go to Vernons and load up on day old pastries for 20p. Christmas 1982 was a magical time filled with pub crawls and night clubs. On the last day of the term, my class went to the Pig and Whistle and did a conga dance all the way back to the College. One fella they did'nt like, was treated to a free beer and a dash of Andrews mix. No need to mention where he spent the rest of the afternoon. When back in the classroom, some were painting American Indian war faces on each other with Tipex and shoes were thrown out to the street below. Needless to say, Mr. Button cancelled the afternoon class.
  3. The death penalty is too expensive. Cryonics would be much cheaper and would give more time to prove or disprove the crime. If after say 100 years or so, it has been proven that the crime was committed, they could simply pull the plug. If not, hold them on ice until they can be brought back.
  4. Keep Britain Tidy! Outsource it to India!!! http://www.lgofestivals.com/keep-britain-tidy-2005.gif
  5. Looks like we better plug-up those volcanoes....
  6. Would this depend on if you are left handed or right handed?
  7. Perhaps we could have a fake war. It would be far less expensive and less likely to result in nuclear winter. Lets start by hosting very large propaganda parties and wear smart looking uniforms. Then we could ship out a few million men off on ships and then sink them, reducing the population. Then we could blow up a few things around the neighborhood, which will allow us to knock off a few million more people. You know...old people, women, children, pets, etc... This will also allow us to build new things as most of it is not being kept up anyway. While this is all going on, we can develop great propaganda slogans and scare the hell out of people enough to make them pitch in and to treat each other better. NOT!!
  8. Dreams are often influenced by what occurred during your day through association. Perhaps someone or something reminded you of a quality or nuance that you associate with your old friend on either a conscious or subconscious level. How the dream played out as far as him being unhappy and that you need to help him, may just be nothing more than an unresolved need for closure as stated by JoeP. Alternatively, it could be that your souls are bound together and that in your dream state he contacted you or that you have some kind of psychic ability. From experience, I cannot dismiss the foretelling of future events in dreams in the slightest. Unfortunately, last summer I dreamed that my father had passed and I saw my mother crying over his body. Last November he passed unexpectedly and the scene was identical to my dream. Go with your gut instincts.
  9. Applications and CVs have very different uses. An applications is simply a chronological list of where you have worked, for how long, and provides a basic idea of what you did. It does not say anything about you as an employee. A CV, in its most effective form, is a marketing tool, which you use to sell yourself as the job candidate of choice. Companies want to know what you can do for them, how well you will perform, that you will be a good fit in both the position and the organization, that you are not a job hopper and that you will have good attendance. Never ever say what the company can do for you in either your CV or your interview. It turns most interviewers off and may lead to embarrassing questions. For example, you said that you would really like to receive proper training in your next position, you are saying the interviewer that you did not grasp the training in your last job and that you may not have tried hard enough. Look at the position description and think about what skills and experience you have that will be an asset for the company. Based on your age, you may have to sell some of your transferable skills such as conflict resolution, leadership, etc. and how they relate to the position as you may not have a lot of direct experience. How well you perform in the new position will be based on what you did in your previous positions. Think about your achievements and very importantly, how you accomplished them. It is important to research the company. This can by done by speaking with employees who work there and receiving feedback on such things as company culture or how management treats its employees. For example, if the company promotes a team environment, you may want to prepare yourself for a lot of "how you work in a team" questions. When it comes to questions about how long you will stay with the company always answer that you are a long-term player. (It costs a lot of money to train people.) Hope this helps...
  10. Joeyannie thanks for all your wonderful advice. I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry...It just struck me that the last time I took a bus in Sheffield, I only paid 10 pence. Suddenly I feel quite old...
  11. Hello, It has been over twenty years since I have been in Sheffield and I will be visiting in August. I will be traveling from the US to attend a wedding in Sweden and will be stopping in Sheffield for a couple of days and need to price out this leg of my trip. I am hoping that some friendly Sheffield Forum users may be able to assist me. Any advice on the cost of a taxi and bus as well as what a train would cost from either London or Manchester would be most appreciated. If anyone operates a bucket shoppe, I would also be interested in the what is would cost to fly to other parts of Europe from Manchester. Thank you in advance!!!
  12. Introducing this device could create several illegal businesses. In order to make this program work, the government would have to prevent people from turning it off (putting the transponder in a Faraday cage) by checking cars as they pass to see if they are tagged. If government's program is not sophisicated enough to match the transponder to the make, model and license plate number and provide this information on demand to local law enforcement agencies, then all someone would have to do is create a dummy transponder and sell it.
  13. Normally I would say get a remote starter. However, after reading this, it would make sense to also add an inflatible motorist that would sit in the driver's seat while the car is warming up. (Kind of like the autopilot in the movie Airplane, except this one would be inflated/deflated automatically)
  14. You may wish to consider your compatibility based on maturity level more than age. If she is immature and you are the right maturity for your age, you may quickly grow tired of coddling her. As for the long distance...for the vast majority of people it really isn't really a relationship unless you are there. You may wish to ignore that minority who will tell you lengthy stories about how some great Auntie did it way back when during a war or something and how it worked out. If you really want to make it work, you need to be together. At risk of being called chauvinistic, I recommend mulling over that trite old saying “ never chase skirt.” I wish that I had heeded this saying when I was younger since I tried several long distance relationships and each failed. Not to say yours will, but some old sayings are based on experience…. That’s my two pence
  15. Lets see here... The computers they used in the 1970s for climate climate change modeling had less computing power than my PDA phone. If we are simply going by the stick your head out the window process, we MUST be going through another ice age as it is currently -34C in Chicago and it has been that way for two whole days!
