  1. Oh how I would love to, but there's 'Unfairness at work' which can be construed into all sorts of ways. No, I will work with my seniors and see what they can do about getting these two trouble makers out of the dept as they are creating low morale for the rest of their team. All it takes it one to disrupt everyone else and the others, who are good workers who behave a have good attendance records, end up losing out due to the bad ones.
  2. In response to multiple posts: I have my own office and I am Management so I get a mobile. I update a website by using this so the 'don't use your mobile' isn't valid in this situation whether or not I log into SF during the day, that is my own choice as my phone bill does get checked. I use SF to research for work for info on opinions and thoughts that come from Sheffield people. I haven’t lost control of my staff nor am I about to leave. I merely asked for advice from you on ‘idea’s on how to motivate my staff’, not a judgement on my role! Geez! I have effectively changed the environment for staff since joining the dept and implemented a lot of positive changes. However, I have two disruptive staff who I have followed procedure and put onto action plans, put through disciplinary and now waiting for the senior management to do their bit and take it further. I don’t work in a private company so control of finances and bonuses etc...are not available from me. Showing anger or saying 'I am the boss' kind of thing isn't an option as I have more respect for myself and my employers. I follow HR and protocol very closely to the point as not to become like failing Managers I endured in the past. I work professionally every day and they know who is the boss, it's not about that, it's about how I can get them to want to do their work and be proud of being a part of something that works and also has a positive impact in the world. I can't just say 'you're sacked' as this isn't a private company, these staff have unions reps and a personnel seem to be a little scared of them. Swings and roundabouts here!! I am highly trained, meet all my targets and have glowing appraisals I was put into this dept from a recommendation. I do ‘manage’ I also ‘lead’, however, when you have a chain of seniors above you, your idea’s sometimes get tossed out by them due to bureaucracy and fear of Unions!! I see it was wrong for me to ask advice here as the majority of it has been useless and it seems some just like to stir things. I have only a few decent pieces of advice I can use here out of 3 pages. So forget I posted this, I will seek answers elsewhere - but many thanks to those who haven't had their two pence worth and have given me good advice!!! MODS PLEASE CLOSE THIS THREAD.
  3. I have a chain of procedures I must follow from action plans to disciplinaries. Things like 'detention' cannot be implemented.
  4. I agree it is, I came to this dept in Sept and they had a Manager before me who wanted to be the best of friends with them all so let she them tell her how they wanted to work. She didn't have any confidence to deal with them as she was afraid of them not liking her - this is why she went and I got employed.. I go online on my IPhone adnd I can't access the internet from work (my reply to the above post) I asked for advice on how to motivate the staff not for judgement about my net usage!!!!!!
  5. I have a team of around 12 people I manage and I am highly trained however, the team do not really want to be at work and are increasingly being disruptive. I am getting complaints from others saying they are being disturbed by gossip, loud noise etc....now, I have to follow procedure and set policies which is sometimes hard to keep them in line due to the protocol I have to follow which sometimes appears to favour the staff. I can't just move them all to sit on their own as this would be seen as being 'unfair'. I have my procedures and HR know who the bad staff are. I wondered if anyone could give me any new ideas how I can motivate them from gossiping, swizzing around on their chairs and not giving a stuff whether they get caught or not. They have no office etiquette, regularly bad mouth each other and rude to everyone. These are women of all ages who have worked here for around 7 years and most are in unions. I am friendly but firm and it has worked until now but I could do with some under the table things to do and say to them that won't land me at the Union! Any advice would be appreciated!!
  6. People who arn't stuck in a box and spend all day online moaning!! I bet you have never been out of your city have you, well here's some news for you: there are other Countries out there, other cultures and races and there is A WHOLE WORLD OUT THERE. Try switching off your tv and taking your processed food out of your mouth and realise that your city isn't the be all and end all......idiot! Your uneducated comment says it all about the type of person you are! I am going to bangkok soon (as I am cultured and interested in life outside my own city) and I hope the unrest calms down!!
  7. Why would someone think naming a house would be pretentious?? I don't understand? Why should your house just have a number? We should and could all do what we like in hope of not being judged by others who could be seen as being jealous. I think naming of houses is a nice thing to do.
  8. I agree with you but when I was around 14-15 years old all I wanted to do was be what I thought was grown up and sexy, which ment piling on make up, doing my hair like I was off to a wedding and wearing my school skirt rolled up with the tie done so it was only 2inches long. I don't know why I thought I looked older like this....? My parents didn't have a clue at all what I was doing, my friends and I used to rub the make up off on the way home!
  9. I used to walk to work in the City some years back and always without fail had men (some older than my dad) whistling and shouting things at me every morning. When one day I spoke to my old pops who gave me some great advice: to shout at the workmen before they shouted to me. After several minutes of building up the guts to actually do this, I shouted upto a gang of workmen something along the lines of 'get it out then lads'.... not one knew what to say back to me, the next day they just said 'hello love'. Mae West said 'It is better to be looked upon than overlooked'. I don't mind workmen whistling at me, some do step out of line though and become more like sex pests, but what I do mind is when they do it to school girl aged 'children'.
  10. Whatever people say, these lads careers are over etc....they should've thought about their futures before being violent criminals and yobs at footballs matches!! If the football hoolligans were to behave then the Police would not even have to be present - speaks volumes to anyone who is not a hooligan or thug!
  11. Surely with today's techonology they could make a tv with a strong aereal in it enough to pick up digital? I suppose things like walls and hills would make the signals not come through though...... Why is Emley Moor so terrible? I lived in the edge of Bradway/Dore, more of less on top of a hill and couldn't get any channels bar ones that were snowy.
  12. It's been going on for years and will continue to. A lot of men have their eyes glued to anything female, and a lot are so sexually minded that they cannot think of anything else but being pervy! I feel sorry for men whose sole purpose in life is to think about sex all day! A lot of these pervy van men don't realise that they are eyeing up children though, which is sick on all levels!
  13. Why are tv's made without digital aerials built in? Why do companies not build them into the tv? Could anyone recommend a good digi aerial that picks up freeview in unclear area's, one you don't have to install on the roof?
  14. Tim Rayner's book - 'man who ate the world', is a great read for anyone who loves food! And from what i've read it is all you need for your NYC eating! According to Tim, NYC isn't that great for food but maybe you can get an idea of what is what from the book. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Man-Who-Ate-World-Perfect/dp/0755316355/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1272970145&sr=1-1-fkmr0
