  1. I would have thought that it was obvious. But then again, I am just a whatever. You are quite right - my understanding of it to .
  2. Might it be that everyone believes in " Their God " and that somehow , In whatever venture they embark upon , " God" is on their side. All of those historical morons who cry " In the name of God " , do so because they "pervertedly" believe that it gives them some moral credence or superior reasoning over those whom they wish to demise or subjugate . That ,I would suggest , also applies to those who wish to denigrate other individuals for their belief. No God , whichever religion you would quote, advocates one human being committing the atrocities to which they subject one another. Someone asked previously " How it is that all other species of animals have managed to survive on this planet over millions of years , whilst humans have evolved over " thousands " of years "? Maybe the question should be "How have humans managed to survive over these thousands of years , when the animal kingdom has has evolved over the millions of years "? I would suggest that GOD only knows ! At this juncture I would quote a notorious puritan , " Everyone claims that God is on his side , I wonder that God ask's who is on his side "? It appears that human beings will go on committing atrocity's , or claiming their superior knowledge over what is right or wrong . Is It out of sheer arrogance ?
  3. Wasn't Amber one of Bass prior to Bass Charringtons or was it one of Tennants ?
  4. Now there's a difference . 1960 , in the pub on Blue Boy street ( don't remember the name ), my first pint of Stones - jungle juice -was 9d in real money. Though the wages were little at the time , you didn't need a lot for a good session. to-day , there is still some difference in the pricing of a pint . I can go into a local for a pint of Sam Smiths ( old brewery bitter ) in York at £1.67p. a pint, compared to £3.20 for other beers in other pubs. Wetherspoons will sell you a pint of decent beer ( branded beers ) much cheaper than other pubs . Who is conning who? Inflation accounts for some , greed for the rest !
  5. Now- come on ! You said that you are visiting your mum and family. It seems from your contribution that you are as much interested in the food and booz ! Good luck, and a good reunion . I hope that you enjoy your stay -family, food and booz , and return home with a good memory.
  6. Thanks for this memory! I lived on the springs in the 50's and I remember the stick with a poster with the name of " Sir Frank Soskis . We cried out vote-vote-vote for Mr. Soskis , you cant have a better man. He was the candidate for Neepsend ; as it was then. He was a Labour candidate . Our , or rather my parents , poling station was the methodist chapel on the corner of Pickering road - Wallace road .
  7. ( 1 ). There is a thread on SF where someone in Spain buys their Hendersons from a local supermarket. (2). The nightlife is known around Leeds , Manchester and yes, even in Newcastle . - But I don,t recall anyone claiming it to be worldwide. ( 3) Now there you have scored a goal . Who do you play for - be careful , you have scored two home goals so far - the next is a penalty, be careful that you are not made to look arrogant and rediculous. (4) Sheffield doe's not claim to be Gods own country , though it may be a part of it .Sheffielders claim to be Sheffielders and Yorkshire folk, not Gods chosen people - for their God will decide that . Finally, may your God strike you down you "Phillistine" , Manchester is in bloody Lancashire and not Gods own country oooops Yorkshire . I bet you are southerner as well as phillistine ! ---------- Post added 22-08-2014 at 20:35 ---------- I would suggest that it is . There is no right or wrong, no good or bad. It is all in the eye of the beholder . That is what makes Sheffield what it is .
  8. Hi Pat. I think that you are right about the warmth and the humour ,though I think the reason for the difference would be more difficult to understand , but I don't think that it is deliberate . If I could give an example of what I mean : I spent my honeymoon in Cornwall . We stayed in Newquey. We went on an outing to Bosscastle , where I suffered a flat tyre . I had taken all the tools out of the car and forgot about them . A local garage offered to sell me a spanner to unfasten the wheel . A very kind builder , who was doing a job close by , offered to loan me a spanner ; his accent was obviously local . I thanked him very much for his kindness , turned and was about to attack the wheel when he asked ," Where abouts in Newcastle are you from "? I picked up the spanner , coughed , spluttered and retorted in the deepest guttural accent that I could command , "am from Sheffild - its in Yorksher". " Is that near Newcastle " was the response . They just have no idea ,poor things . Its all down to us missionaries - Do your best love .
  9. This paranoia is born out of a long standing banter between two equally prestigious city's within our county and not Just the north. Yes , Leeds is a proud City . Likewise so is Sheffield , each with a just cause to be so . Unfortunately some people take the banter to a serious extent. Leeds is Leeds and Sheffield is Sheffield . Together they are a force to be reckoned with .... " United we stand " , doesn't that mean something ? The " pity" to which you refer surely is born out of that paranoia.
  10. I am implying an emergency " life or death" , I am suggesting an urgency on your part as a patient.
  11. Wern't the put on chastity belts so they rust ? Was the message " Keep out" ?
  12. Why is it pointless to ask over half a million people in Sheffield what they think of their city ? There are countless people outside Sheffield who also have a high regard for the city . To try and define the attributes of both the city of Sheffield and its people is like asking what the world will be like in a thousand years from now - there is no definitive answer to either .Each and every one will have a different response , both positive and negative . To everyone , in one respect or another, the grass will always be greener on the other side . I have said it before and will say it again. Sheffield has had more than its fair share of problems thrown at it ,and it has come through them. That has been because of the grit and determination of its people . Long may it do so.
  13. Very well put. So there are some rational contributions made to this thread . ---------- Post added 22-08-2014 at 17:50 ---------- You are right cuttsie, but wasn't that suggestion used in the objection to the M62 being constructed . Sadly, no one listened then. ---------- Post added 22-08-2014 at 21:55 ---------- Before you start ranting on about the people of Sheffield moan, moan moaning, just think about what you are comparing the HS3 project and what that can do anually , not just for a day in the year as the TDF, or the dying atraction of a cinema or a market which caters for the locality . There is no comparison for any of these to the benefit which the HS3 could bring to the city. In the past the emphasis has been on maintaining the prestigious "Master Cutler " and the discussions and arguments which the steel industry and the cutlers company had with "British Railways " prior to their demise to maintain this" Iconic bastion of the bygone era ". Yes , it was supported by the then city council , rightly so .For they were supporting the industry of the city , before it had its feet kicked from under it . I live on the East Coast main line from Edinborough to London. It passes through Newcastle, York , Doncaster and all stations south. SHEFFIELD - Where is it ? The nearest connection is via York or Doncaster. The Grand central, Which connects Newcastle to London , offers minimal connections to London - as an afterthought . Sheffield , I am sorry to say , is a forgotten city in the minds of the national administration . Oh, this is not the fault of the Sheffield City Council , or that of the Chamber of trade and commerce . I suspect that most people will be well aware of the vindictiveness of the system which prevails in this country. Sheffield , I feel , will have a fight on its hands for many years to come , despite the determination of its council, chamber of commerce and its people.
