Well, I guess you need to format the hard, so the system can see it. Commonly you cannot see you external drive because the hard disk itself is not formatted yet.

Is it bundle in the PC you bought or you buy it separately? If it is package in the PC you both it is only a trial version that is good for 90days. If you bought it separately you should have 12 months free update and you can renew it before the end so you have continuous update.

From my own experience Norton is not so good neither for antivirus nor as a internet security service. It makes PC slow and not so effective to kill viruses. I refer you to use Kaspersky or NOD32. These wont make your PC slow. You can also use AVG. But I'd recommend you to use NOD32 as it is the best for me.
