  1. Is it possible to include some details please? e.g. how much is a pitch here, what time for sellers
  2. I do wish the forum had a 'like' button... ---------- Post added 29-11-2017 at 17:42 ---------- By 'freaking out' I didn't mean he was just barking! As I think I said in my original post, he screamed as if in pain and ran out onto a busy road (he's 8 and has never done that before). I rang streets ahead because I googled it and it looks likely there was an electrical fault with the lamppost. Turns out electric shocks from lampposts are a Thing. Would hate for an animal (or a child!) to be seriously hurt as a result.
  3. And an 80s perm... ---------- Post added 27-11-2017 at 18:54 ---------- Called Streets Ahead this morning – they were going to get someone out today to have a look. They didn't accuse me of being mad, so looks like it may well be some electrical problem causing the dogs to get a shock.
  4. Actually, I think that may well be it – found this (going to call Sheffield council in the morning): https://animalwellnessmagazine.com/electric-shock-street/ ---------- Post added 26-11-2017 at 20:15 ---------- True! Wish they could tell us stuff... ---------- Post added 26-11-2017 at 20:16 ---------- I wondered if it might be something like that, but I'm beginning to think it may be a faulty streetlight; https://animalwellnessmagazine.com/electric-shock-street/
  5. Hmm, possibly. Would that actually make him shriek, though? Honestly, it was as though something had hit him.
  6. The last few days, our dog has totally freaked out at a point about 20 feet into Frog Walk (from the Sharrow Road entrance). We thought he was just being a bit strange, but we've just talked to our neighbour who also has a dog, and exactly the same thing has happened. They get to near the first lamppost, and then go absolutely crazy to get away - our dog actually ran back up from walk and out onto the road yesterday, something he's never done before. Today, I kept him on the lead when passing that spot but he screamed as if in pain and nearly pulled me over in his desperation to get away. Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone have any ideas?
  7. So, it's time to break out those brand-new notebooks you got for Christmas ready for an exciting new writing year! Will this be the year you finally get round to starting that novel? Or maybe you'll finish the novel you've been working on since 1963! Whatever you're hoping to achieve this year, we're raring to go with our Writing a Novel workshops to help you on your way. The first workshop this year is on 4th of February and is filling up fast, as is the second one on 4th of March. On 4th of February, The topic is Setting, Description, and Imagery. Here's the blurb: with more than 1 million words in the English language to choose from, how do you select the right ones? This workshop will explore ways to use imagery effectively, create evocative descriptions and settings, and develop a confident and accomplished style that will help to make your writing sing. This workshop is suitable for all levels – and you don't need to have even started a novel! http://www.susanelliotwright.co.uk/p/workshops.html
  8. So glad I clicked on this blog post and read it – I'm a southerner who moved here 11 years ago, thinking it was only for a couple of years and then I'd go back to 'that London'. Not likely. I love this city and the people in it, and I give thanks every day that I'm lucky enough to live here. This post and the photographs that accompany it reflect my feelings about wonderful, creative Sheffield exactly.
  9. Coming up on Saturday, 10th December 2016 - our next Writing a Novel workshop will looking at structure – often one of the trickiest things to get right in a novel. We'll explore some of the options available and help you to apply them to your own novel. We'll look at what makes a good beginning and ending, how to move around in time, how to tackle a dual narrative, and a great deal more besides. To get the best from this workshop you will have already started writing, even if it's only a chapter or two that if you haven't, you need to have at least a rough outline of your novel. Cost £45 for the day Full details here: http://www.susanelliotwright.co.uk/p/workshops.html I am the bestselling author of The Things We Never Said, The Secrets We Left Behind, and What She Lost (out in March 2017) all published by Simon & Schuster. Russell Thomas is a novelist and scriptwriter, winner of the Waterstones bursary for his novel Firewatching
  10. The next in our series of novel writing workshops is coming up on 12th of November. Here's the blurb: How do you convey your characters feelings, thoughts and emotions in a convincing way? This workshop will help you to decide when (and how) to create scenes by understanding when to 'show' or 'evoke', and when it's okay to 'tell' or 'inform'. We'll help you to craft realistic and revelatory dialogue that helps to advance your story and deepen your characters. This workshop is suitable for anyone writing or considering writing a novel, whether you've finished a draft, or whether you're still in the early stages of planning your characters and story. Cost for the day (10.30 to 4.30) £45 Full details here: http://www.susanelliotwright.co.uk/p/workshops.html I am the bestselling author of The Things We Never Said, The Secrets We Left Behind, and What She Lost (out in March 2017) all published by Simon & Schuster. 11. Could you do with some time away from domestic responsibilities and distractions? For this one day, from 10.30 until 4.30, it's just about you and your writing, with no need to think about work, shopping, cooking, laundry, childcare, cleaning, unblocking the sink, washing the car, taking the cat to the vet etc. Why pay to go somewhere and write when you could just do it at home? Well, we offer a little more than a room to work in. We're offering writing prompts If you'd like them, a structured period of time at the end of the day for participants to showcase their work, plus you'll have two highly experienced writer/tutors on hand to give encouragement, support, and advice where possible. And there's something about working in a room full of other writers that generates an incredibly powerful creative energy – most people find they at least double their usual output by attending a day's retreat. There will be refreshments, obvs, with decent coffee and home-made biscuits. It'll be FAB! Full details of this, and our other one-day workshops appear here: http://www.susanelliotwright.co.uk/p/workshops.html
  12. We're now taking bookings for our popular and slightly re-vamped Writing a Novel workshops. We've looked carefully at the feedback we've received - overwhelmingly glowing but with a few suggestions for improvement – and we've made some little tweaks and twiddles so that we're focusing on what people have enjoyed the most and found the most useful. You can book or reserve a place on any of the workshops in the programme, but we're particularly keen to take bookings for Planning and Plotting, which is on 24th of September (£45) and for our special Space to Write day on 8th of October. (£30, or £25 if you have attended any of our one-day novel workshops over the past year, or if you've booked a place on any of the new ones.) 13. Due to bad planning (hadn't realised it was tramlines this weekend, and first week of the school holidays) the fabulous Steps to Publication workshop comng up this Saturday 23 July has failed to attract as many bookings as we'd hoped, so we're taking the unprecedented step of offering this one-day workshop at the bargain price of just £30. We have such a great day lined up, and we have guest authors Marian Dillon (Looking for Alex, The Lies Between Us) and Bernadette Keeling (Into Dust and other stories) joining us to talk about their experiences of digital publishing and self publishing, respectively. We'll also be discussing traditional publishing, how to approach an agent, and how to write a selling synopsis. Full details: http://www.susanelliotwright.co.uk/p/workshops.html

  15. This is so true of some people! And yes, we think it's great value. I wish I'd had access to workshops like this when I was trying to get published. It wouldn't have guaranteed publication, but it would have stopped me making some silly mistakes and may have got me there quicker. I know we're blowing our own trumpets here, but this workshop really is going to be a cracker. We now have two guest authors, too, and they'll be speaking about their experiences of self-publishing and digital publishing, so between us, we've just about got everything covered. And all for 40 quid!
