  1. Bring your own wine allows people to eat out more often for less money. It's one way restaurants in Sheffield are trying to keep busy. Many licensed restaurants now offer byo wine to keep customers coming in. Some, like us at Otto's, offer both options. It doesn't mean our wine is no good, or our food for that matter. We just prefer to offer people the choice. We couldn't possibly stock the range of wines needed to suit everyone's taste or everyone's budget so it works well for us and our customers. Licences for alcohol sales are restricted to the area defined in the premises licence plan issued by Sheffield City Council and approved by the police, Fire Service, etc. Ours is for downstairs but not for upstairs. To apply for an extension to our alcohol licence would require structural changes to the building that we only lease but don't own. It would be difficult to get a return on such an investment in the current economic climate. Everyone has their own view on byo wine but it seems to be very popular with our customers and I can't see that changing while everyone seems to be looking to cut their living costs but not their standard of living. Regards Tad1 Co-owner of Otto's
  2. Many years ago we took in 2 lodgers and their 2 cats because they couldn't find anywhere. They had sold their house and had to do work on their next house so needed a stopgap. We are still friends and saw them yesterday! If you would consider a house share you might have more luck. Renting is a landlords market at the moment. It may help if you advertise somewhere and offer a separate pet deposit? I don't know what might convince a landlord. Good luck Tad1
  3. Hi Timtom We can do you something at Otto's. All the dishes below are also yeast free. We make them ourselves. Zaalouk, pea soup and harira soup are vegan starters. Vegetable tagine or vegetable couscous are both vegan main courses. We do a vegetable filo parcel in a tomato and chick pea sauce. I believe that filo pastry is yeast free but I will have to check because I'm not the one who does the cooking at Otto's. Strawberry and passion fruit sorbet dessert would be suitable for you. I will double check the flour less chocolate and almond cake raising agent with chef later but it does contain egg so isn't vegan. I'm not sure from your post if you do sometimes eat egg as I think you said preferably vegan. A lot of independent restaurants will try and offer you something if you just let them know in advance. They will know what they put in their food. Good luck. I hope you find a few options. Fusion cafe in town has a vegan chef called Komal and has quite a few vegan dishes every day. They used to do bistro evenings so you could try there. Komal also does a food blog which may give you some ideas. I know she's on Twitter as well. Regards Tad1
  4. I believe I know someone who knows this lady who hand knits for SV market. I'll ask them and get back to you. Regards Tad1

  11. Hi I co-own Otto's. We do a number of gluten free choices. Menus on our website http://www.ottosrestaurant.co.uk Also I think Green Steps on Hickmott Road does gluten-free fish and chips one day a week. Not sure if it's Tuesday. Regards Tad1
  12. This is not quite about SEO but I have spent the last 2 years getting my business listed as fully as possible on every free business directory going. We are now getting more and more online enquiries and business generated. It's a slog but well worth half an hour a day for a few weeks or so. Google/Bing/ Yahoo search your business/area and check that your listed everywhere that comes up if it's free. Every site we have ever paid to appear on has cost us money and brought few customers in return. Good luck Regards Tad1
  13. Tripadvisor don't actually answer most queries / suggestions, unfortunately. My husband has run The Med since 1999, you're right. Glad you enjoy going there. As for reviews on TA, I, too, use it for research but unless the site starts to require reviewers to prove that they are genuine customers, the manipulation of rankings can continue. I have to say I am also amazed by some of the rankings but I am very careful about the views I express on the subject for obvious reasons. I have made positive reviews of Sheffield restaurants on TA but I cannot make a negative one or I would be accused of having ulterior motives. I NEVER review anything I'm connected with - that just muddies the waters as far as I'm concerned. Going to a restaurant is a very personal experience. At our place we take the view that it's about valuing our customers and offering the service and experience we would like to receive ourselves but others may disagree and make their choice based on price or even reputation. All we can do is stay true to ourselves and give of our best. I'm only 3 years into the catering trade and I still have a rose-tinted view!
  14. Tripadvisor and similar sites are the subject of an industry-wide debate at the moment because they can be subject to abuse. It is impossible to get reviews removed, even factually inaccurate ones, and anyone can make a review which is computer-ranked and not actually scrutinised by anybody. It will fast lose it's credibility if these issues are not addressed. I co-own a Sheffield restaurant and we have had both positive and negative impact from our customer reviews on Tripadvisor.
  15. Hi Amzy tried to send you a private message but your box is full Regards Tad1
