  1. CUTLERS ARMS Hi Billy Caspar! - thanks for the feedback - according to the census our family ran the pub for most of the census years to 1901 (Naylors). You were great in Kes! V best to you!
  2. Hi - We had a relative who was a telegram boy in about 1910 - he started when he was about 12 I think! The Post Office Musem has an archive and lots of info. http://www.postalheritage.org.uk/
  3. Hi J and GB, That would mean that the FEARNLEY family appeared in Trade Directories for that particlular area for at least 80 years. Just an observation - not sure if it means anything!
  4. Hi GB - how are you? We are not too good on Sheffield geography - but does this mean that the FEARNLEY who is listed as a farmer - with the the address Piper Lane - in the 1833 Trade Directory for Sheffield still lived in the area of Longley Hall. Ta
  5. Hi J In the 1833 Sheffield Direcotry a Samuel FEARNLEY appears as a farmer but he is at Piper Lane.
  6. Hi! Fascinating Thread! Sheffield Trade Direcotories 1911 - Mrs Ellen FEARNLEY is shown as a 'farmer' at Longley Grange in Longley Lane 1919 - George Willm FILLINGHAM is shown as 'farmer' at Longley Grange (Longley La) 1919 and 1925 - a Herbert Lee IBBOTSON (Bailiff/Sheffield Guardians) is at Longley Hall Farm Grantham
  7. Hi this is a gripping read; just wondering if this 'Yorkshire Indexers' site may be able to help or carry a message if you join up Audrey.... http://www.yorkshireindexers.co.uk/forums/ Used by people researching Yorkshire family history etc. Also looking at the Trade Directories for Sheffield: As well as for 1911 - in 1919 George BUXTON is still the Victualler at the The Old Crown & Cushion 21 Old Street, Sheffield Park Best wishes to the 'Building Hunters'!, Grantham
  8. Hi GB - well, I'm also not such the remarkable feature that I was some years ago so maybe there is a connection!!! Ho Ho!! Thanks for all the extra info; we will definitely look up the original parish records. PHILADELPHIA WORKS & BUTCHER - We also heard of things not working out in Philly for Butcher (something do do with the idea for a manufacturing process that was either nabbed or superceeded or something). Do you think he called that area of Sheffield Philadephia at a time when things were looking rosy in the US? Or is the name for that area much older than that? TA!
  9. Hi, just noticed: Port Mahon There are two pics of Port Mahon Post Office and other shops from 1930 on Picture Sheffield.
  10. Hi - re: Philadelphia Steels Works We have just found some piccies on Picture Sheffield - it was Samuel and William Butcher who owned the works - going by the pictures on PS the works were badly damage by the big Sheffield Flood.
  11. Hi Greybeard - yes it is an IGI entry - when we go to Sheffield next year we plan to check these as some IGI enties do not have parish records to back them up. But a friend once told me that she had checked some IGI entries through access to a v old family bible and that had a family record of details that pretty much matched what she found on IGI for her family. I guess that when you get that far back you just have to go with what is available! It could be that this 'Otter, Sheffield. entry was added via a family 'knowledge' source by someone unknown to us has rather than parish source - we do not know! But is interesting to know that an Otter Street was there in 1903 - thanks for that; perhaps it was once an area with a few houses or a farm or something. Thanks for your help Greybeard
  12. Hi PlainTalker - thank you SO much - we have used your lead and found this website - the street numbering must have changed or something - as it is now 74 Worksop Road! Can't believe it is still going over 100 years later! Thanks again for helping us out! http://www.sheffieldpubs.fsnet.co.uk/Business/pubs/fara.htm
  13. Hello PlainTalker, In the 1891 census it is 62 Worksop Road; not sure the street numbering may have changed since then - cheers
  14. Hi all - we have found out some of the organisations that will be at Bradfield on Sunday: * Bradfield Parish Family History Centre * Sheffield and District Family History Society * Stocksbridge and District Family History Society * Stannington Local History Group * Sheffield Flood Family Research
  15. Thank you Greybeard - maybe the street is long established (to go back to 1680's or so) or built on a farm or a field with that name. By the way, when you say there 'was' a street of that name; do you mean that the street is no longer standing? Thanks again!
