The Cane Or Slipper At School 77-99
melv replied to Peter John's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Stool ball bat, slipper, slapped legs, ears and hair pulled, thumped in the middle of the back and ruler across the knuckles were on the junior school menu. I progressed to the cane in secondary school. -
Listened to it last night. It made me chuckle when they were winding the manager up.

I use EyeEye on John Street. You get a thorough eye test, which lasts over an hour and costs £40-00. There are no hidden charges as the prices are advertised on the counter. In the past I've used Boots and Specsavers and it seems you're on a production line and you're lucky if you get 15mins for the eye test. It took 6wks at Boots to try and get my specs right, in the end I got my money back and they got a 1 star review on their website. £40-00 might sound expensive for an eye test...remember you've on got 1 pair of eyes.

I used to maintain the heating and ventilation in the research labs. I remember a guy who worked in the Creep lab, he wore the most ridiculous toupee, I forget his name, now. I also played football with Gary Elliot and Ian Lappin.

Get saving if you want to go to Chatsworth craft fair. It'll set you back £28-00 to park your car!

Bring back Duncun's😁 -
I was there from 1969-1979. I worked on maintenance and worked all over the factory.

Firth Brown's had 5 different canteens; shopfloor workers, staff, foremens, managers and directors. The food was basic and not very cheerful. The serving staff did a training course at a zoo as they used to throw food at you😁 As a part of my job I had to go into the directors canteen, where they had silver service and a dedicated chef!...a bit different to Japanese canteens, where everyone ate together. Industrial relations were terrible in this country at that time.

I know someone with a surname of Cart. He called his son Orson😁

We used to use the canteen at Marshalls when we went fishing in the river below Dam Flask. We were 11 years old and we pigged out on the puddings😄. We also did a bit of poaching in the pond, which was stocked with some huge trout. BTW, we organised it by ourselves, having to catch 2 buses, as our parents didn't have a car. Can't see kids nowadays doing that.
