  1. Vegan cookery and interest in plant based vegan food has taken off in recent years as people look to eat more healthily as well as safeguard the environment. Leading Sheffield based vegan and plant food advocates Shed who have joined the ranks of food producers at the recently opened Cutlery Works food hall will be showing people how to cook and prepare a range of plant powered vegan food on this one day vegan cookery course at Hartingtons School of Food in Bakewell on the 1st June 2019. A great introduction to vegan and vegetarian cookery with an exciting new Sheffield food business.
  2. Hi Thanks for the replies and it's not quite my point. I understand about the enforceability but has had anybody had experience of being fined for not paying for a ticket for 1-2 hours. The signage is confusing in that it still talks about 2 hours free parking. I suspect that the cameras only pick up on people staying longer than 2 hours but they are reliant on people paying up using the ticket machine. Anybodies recent experience would be helpful. Cheers Chris
  3. I am a regular user of the Berkley Centre car park which up to recently had a free 2 hour policy with enforcement using a camera and monitored by Vehicle Control Services. They have now installed a parking meter which gives free parking for 1 hr but asks for a ticket costing a £1 for 1-2 hours. The signs about 2 hour free parking remain. Does anybody have any experience or info on the enforceability of the £1 charge? Chris
  4. I'm wondering if our trusted and long held local treasure the Sheffield Telegraph has lost it's local focus particularly when it comes to it's food and drink features. I've become aware that increasingly they have strayed well beyond the City boundary and become increasingly generic. I know that the parent company Johnston Press are under financial pressures to cut costs but with Sheffield having such an interesting, vibrant and rich food heritage then it seems sad that some jounalists have to pad out the paper with generic articles about businesses and people with no connection to the city or it's environs. Sad! If I want to read about about any old food business I'll buy a food magazine. Why do I buy my copy of the Sheffield Telegraph every week? It's because I want to know what's going on in my City not some where else.
  5. I maybe a little late to the party on this one. Some excellent advice here on the things to avoid in running a pub. Here in Totley we have watched with interest the fortunes of our local pubs. The Fleur de Ley has closed permanently and will eventually become flats or a residential development site. The Crown at Totley has seen a succession of publicans who have not been able to make the pub work largely down to the rent and pricing of the beer charged by Punch Taverns (the owner). There are big forces at play which act against a landlord being able to make a pub work in the way they used to. Namely, discounted supermarket prices for alcohol and drink drive laws, plus people are drinking less (non of these things are necessarily bad). However creating a successful pub can be done. Have a look at the Broadfield on Abbeydale Road to see how a great selection of beers, a good vibe and honest pub grub to combine together to make a successful pub. What I would say is that this pub I'm pretty sure is not owned by a pubco which has to be the starting point for any successful pub enterprise. If you are looking for great general advice on running a pub then the howtorunapub website is brill. There is also this course that may be of interest to somebody who want independent advice on how to run a pub free from the shackles of the pubcos and big brewers.
  6. Cheers, there's a lot of beer brewing expertise in Sheffield. I've just been down to Brewmart to check them out. Very helpful!
  7. Sounds like a might just have to plunge in there and give it a go. Any good local places to get beer brewing kit or ingredients or should I just have a look on the Internet?
  8. Hi, thanks for all the pointers. Iv'e done a little bit of digging and have unearthed Big Ed who does all grain courses in Sheffield and also Brew-School in Bakewell that also does beer brewing courses Has anybody any experience of either?
  9. Hi thanks for your reply. I have thought about just having a go but find all the online advice a bit confusing. I think would benefit from a bit of expert advice on the basics of all grain beer brewing.
  10. I'm looking at starting brewing beer. I'm a novice and wondered if there were any beer brewing courses out there to teach all grain brewing. I've had a go with kits but want to get into brewing the real stuff.
  11. I've tried the bread too. It's delicious particularly some of the eastern european rye breads. Tanya who is from the Ukraine spent years training to bake in her homeland and if you have a taste of her specialist breads you will get a true sense of her expertise.
  12. I went on this Bakewell Pudding Course earlier this year. Thoroughly enjoyable experience and I got to take home a couple of my own Bakewell Puds. I have to say it did demystify some of the aspects of making the pastry in particular. Marion the tutor from Bloomers in Bakewell was excellent but funnily enough wasn't forthcoming in the 'secret' ingredient!
  13. I notice there has been a fair bit of work being done at the Crown in Totley. Does anybody know what is happening with it and when it is due to reopen?
  14. Thanks for the update on indian cookery courses. I'm loving the southern indian cookery theme. In fairness I did see the Aagrah indian cookery course but I think it is more of a demostration and meal than a full on hands on indian cookery course.
  15. I know it's a long time ago now but I was recently looking for an Indian Cookery Course too and found that this place in Bakewell do Indian Cookery Courses. I also found out that Tideswell School of Food also do Indian Cookery Courses with a lady called Pret who's family were originally from Uganda. I love the 'incredible spice men' and will be looking at attending a course soon so if anybody knows of anywhere else in the Sheffield area that does indian cookery courses please post the details.
