  1. I've been following this thread as my daughter had her Vauxhall Corsa front end, bonnet and headlights stolen a few weeks ago. Although she has fully comprehensive insurance she is hundreds of pounds out of pocket, with the insurance excess and loss of most of her no claims bonus. To see a local theft in progress please watch the following youtube video. <video removed> Apologies if this video has been linked to before on this forum. There are longer and shorter versions of this video on youtube.
  2. I was told by my Dad who worked at Marshall's brick works below it, that it's a "Compensation water dam". He told me that there's a pipeline to it from Blackburn Meadows which is near Meadowhall. As I understand it the water company had to guarantee a supply of water to the factories downstream of Damflask, water being pumped from the other side of the city, from the River Don I presume. I too remember it being full in the late 60's early 70's. By the late 70's it was all but empty, I did ice skate on it when it had about a foot depth of water around that time, during a particularly hard winter (77 or 78).
  3. Did any one else spot that the short clip the BBC used on their National news tonight was taken at Myers Grove School around 1975? It was used in the piece about A-level exams being re-vamped by Universities. It showed 6th form pupils being taught by Mr Taylor, probably an Economics lesson.
  4. Thanks for your replies, vehicle checking would make sense as one officer was standing at the junction looking as though he could direct vehicles into the car park.
  5. Anyone know what has happened at the Joseph Glover Pub at Halfway? I drove past this morning at about 09:40am and there were a least half a dozen police officers in and around the car park. Thanks.
  6. I would give joining the M1 at Jcn 35 (Chapeltown/Ecclesfield) a try. It is mostly 30 mph but you will be onto the M1 in a shorter time/distance. The route I use is A61, at Hillsborough Football ground turn right onto Herries Road, 2nd left after "Five Arches viaduct" onto Wordsworth Avenue. Travel the full length of Wordsworth Avenue, at T junction at Ecclesfield, turn right then left and left again onto The Common, get in left lane, straight on at traffic lights at Travellers Inn, after passing Morrisons on your right, get in right lane and turn right at traffic lights onto Nether Lane and up the hill, turning right at lights and then join M1 North, left at Rbt. Although through a residential area, traffic is lighter and keeps moving.
  7. Thanks for the replies, seems that nobody on here has heard anything, so I don't want to spread unfounded/untrue rumours. Africanqueen, last time I went there a few weeks ago you could still order at the bar and pick your own table. When were you there?
  8. Hi, has anyone heard about future plans for the Admiral Rodney Pub, Loxley Rd, S6?
  9. I was there in the 1960s. so a bit before your time! I would have a look on the Friends Reunited website for school memories.
  10. Yes, Beckett and Garner used to be based Off Fitzwilliam Street and were the auto-motive engineers of choice in the City. They were able to repair damaged or worn engines. I had my Mini gearbox repaired there in the mid-1970s.
  11. Don't worry, the boxes that look like cameras are, as has been said already, waiting traffic sensors that trigger the lights to change when cars are waiting at them. Red light infringment cameras are placed on a post a few yards before the white line and look like small speed cameras, they photograph rear number plates.
  12. Could it be loosing some of the turbo boost pressure through a faulty EGR valve? EGR = exhaust gas recirculation.
  13. I have had BT Vision since it was launched, as a replacement for expensive Sky. I just pay for what premium content I watch. It works great and reliably. However if I remember correctly, you need to be able to get a broadband speed of more than 2.5Mb/s before BT will let you have it, so this could rule out people who live a long way from their local telephone exchange. In the years I have had it, I've had no cause to ring BT Vision customer service so I can't comment on that side of things. I see you have placed your order, hope it works for you as good as mine does.
  14. Yes that's how they come, have you tried the two pin plug in a shaver type adaptor? Daughter had trouble with her's only working intermittently, it was making poor contact within the plug arrangement. I adjusted the contacts and they now work fine. You can trade in faulty old ones towards the cost of a new pair, see GHD website.
  15. I mentioned you to Owen, who is now 85, he remembered you and the fact that you went to Canada, he say's he also remembers the names you quote. How old are you now? I think you worked in a different fitter's shop to him. Can you attach the photograph to this thread?
