  1. I think Mr Benn caught us on video too - we were picking blackberries/rosehips - we were nothing to do with the illegal bikers Mr Benn.
  2. Have just looked at Mr Benn's post, I would be amazed if the forestry have had anything to do with it, I would think they would me more sympthetic to the woodland. The bit around the old pond is quite extensive so I could understand that being improved, plus it may help with the flooding issue in the thorncliffe industrial estate. But the clearing through the woods seems to have no point at all - they have gone from the old pond a good distance into the woods. The damage is about 20m wide and probably nearly a mile long. It does look more like a road clearing. As for putting it back, they have taken some pretty big old trees out. I just want to know what its for, I remember when I was a kid and they did the same to build the A616 and the industrial units 25 years ago. The end of warren lane used to be lovely and peaceful, I know its brought jobs to the area so I suppose there is an up side. I just hope they are not going to buy more industrial units when they can seem to fill the ones that are already there.
  3. Don't quite understand why you felt the need to reply to this post. I am just trying to find out what's happening so I can explain to my 7 year old who was in floods of tears because they were cutting down the woods. Can you not find something better to do with your time.
  4. Does anyone know what the woodland clearing is for at Westwood ? The clearing seems to be road sort of width between the pond at the back of Thorncliffe Park and Westwood park. It's had a devistating effect on the local woodland. It looks like some sort of access road but they have taken it within 1/4 of mile of the A616 which I would have though would have been a better access route. It just looks like a bulldozer has ploughed right through the middle of the woods. I know there was talk of the wind turbines going up at Westwood but I thought that was rejected. Lisa
  5. Jim don't ring the guy at Harley - will send you a message to explain
  6. Hi Jim, we are also thinking of giving up our Hagg Hill allotment - the milage is is not helping. We are probably going to give up one of our plots pretty soon and then make a decision on the other one. We have our name down for a plot at Harley which would also be nearer for you. Send me message off line or on Facebook and I can give you the contact number for Harley if you interested. Lisa
  7. Beer is said to be good - don't ask me why cause I have no idea
  8. We often make bacon sandwiches on a little camping stove but we have bought a dutch oven which you can cook quite a lot in on a small fire but I think it takes a while - I think you can even bake bread in them - I bought a cook book too but I guess it may be better suited to colder weather when you can get stews and soups bubbling away !!
  9. Hi we also live in S35 and are on the waiting list for Burncross allotments - we got fed up of waiting eventually decided to take one of the available plots last March on Hagg Hill - its a bit of a treck for us and would also be keen on getting an allotment nearer home. If you have any luck or have any sites in mind I would be interested to get involved - we would love to not travel as far sort of defeats the reducing food miles idea - Problem is I can't think of any suitable areas that wouldn't get vandilised !
  10. I regularly get these in my tomatoes and cucumbers whici I keep in the conservatory - I had a bad problem last year and read that you shouldn't get a probelm with peat free compost - I have used peat free this year and still got them. I would be glad to here any suggestions and on how to get rid of them.
  11. If I sow the seeds now will they store as well - I just thought it was too late to sow some - I may have a go - maybe I will just get small leeks !! I may order a small batch off the internet and then sow some for planting in a couple of months. Does anyone know if I can use a propogator to speed the growing up a bit or do they prefer a cooler environment
  12. I have just retruned form holiday to find my greenhouse has blown over and my entire crop of leeks that I was going to plant this weekend have been destroyed. Does anyone know where I can get some leek plants from - My local nurseries have sold out so I am a little stuck - I found some on ebay but the postagte takes makes them rather expensive.
  13. Hi Vicki, we also have a plot on Hagg House and I was going to plant mine out this weekend, it will be interesting to see what people think - I think they will be fine - but then I have no idea what I'm doing !!
  14. We have had a worm farm for 4 months now and they don't seem to touch much of the veg peelings we put in - I am putting it down to it being cold and them being less active in the winter !! thats my theory anyway !! I am hoping they will start muching the carrot peelings soon !!! They are still moving about in the container so they are not dead before anyone asks !!
