  1. When I get all nostalgic for the school meals experience I place a glass jug of luke-warm water in the centre of the table and drop a pea or lump of mash in it.
  2. 😮 Jeez, I think I now understand why the kid in the £50 scrapper didn't bother with insurance. £3600 or £180 fine ......... what to chose, what to choose 😕
  3. 😆I was being generous. Probably more like £1800 I suppose, which compounds the injustice further.
  4. Concerning the fines etc dished out to drivers featured in these programmes, I find that a 18 year old uninsured driver pulled over in a £50 'scrapper' and getting a) Car seized, b) Fined £180 a bit of an insult to the 18 year old in the next street who has paid out £800 plus for insurance. I'd have thought that finding out how much the insurance would have been from a reputable broker for the year and fining him that figure plus 50% would be more fair.
  5. Remember there were several buses still running with the old STD livery for a couple of years after the livery change

  7. Hi Donside 6 I was 11 in October '62 whilst at Herdings so I suppose it's possible I started early '63. Pat Davitt, John Oates, Paul Handcock and Michael Jubb don't ring a bell and neither do Rita Walsham nor Susan Morrell. Have been right back and read the thread and with the exception of the 'Lorraines' none of the other names ring any bells. A bit jealous of all you others having all these great memories still Ian
  8. Hi, Ian Markham here. Am reading this thread and a couple of things stand out for me ..... the two Lorraines, A + T. In my eyes back then they were both up there with Claudia Cardinale and Sophia Loren (but in glorious colour). Don't remember many other names posted on here other than my great mate Peter Reaney RIP when he lived on Spotswood Rd. Was at GVSM about 1962-1965 then I moved on to Central Tech up Gleadless Rd., then on to the Army in April '67. Memory is a bit iffy now so having difficulty remembering most people I knew back then at school, even the teachers who used me as a 'board-rubber target' have gone from my mind. We lived on Plowright Drive with my sister Gloria (still alive and kicking) who also went to GVSM and I remember - vaguely - Philip Slack, The Jollys, Lynne Batty, The Drabbles, Stephen Sorby and Stephen Nealey (sp), Somehow though, 'The Lovely Lorraines' are as fresh in my memory as they were all those years ago. 😃 Gleadless Valley back then - beautiful place, beautiful people and what few memories I have remaining are the happiest from my childhood. Been back since ..... What the hell happened there? Regards to anyone who might remember me or my Sis Ian (the short one in the tatty uniform)
  9. I think it was Tommy Ward's (TW Wards, Albion Works) engineers the elephant worked for on Savile Street
  10. I too would recommend Joanne. Friendly, and good quality affordable work
  11. It's all about predicting her indoors' needs and expectations. It's the little things that count. Several months ago it was a mate's 38th anniversary and he was pulling his hair out worrying what to buy and spent every second looking for those tell-tale hints. It wasn't until their daughter brought to his attention the sudden profusion of jewellery catalogues lying around the house. 'That's it', thunk he in a moment of mental release. Why hadn't he noticed before? How could he be so blind? The day arrived and prezzies were duly opened. Boy, was he impressed with the tartan slippers she got him.... just like last year. He then cast his mind back to all those jewellery catalogues and the part they played in hopefully making this anniversary the best yet. With heart-stopping anticipation he watched his beloved slowly peel away the wrapping ....................... He's still sleeping in the shed 3 months later. Apparently a magazine rack for her to put her soddin' jewellery catalogues in out of the way wasn't the way to go.
  12. Hi Kidorry. Sorry for delay in replying to you but news like yours usually has me 'gob smacked', and the fact you're still here lays testament to your resilience and the sheer determination of the medical staff to see you through it all. Well done mate. You were part of the biggest TEAM ever I just find it strange from my personal experience that due to the mask regulations I never saw a face, just the eyes …. that's all I have to remember them all by and the clear and evident compassion shown in those caring eyes...… voices distorted by the masks still said, "You're with us now!" (with a smile you could feel, not see). God bless them all.
  13. Thanks Padders. I don't normally do 'touching'. I'm more of a grump at heart but that experience smacked me square in the face, hard, with the 'touching' reminder. God, it's dusty in here tonight.
  14. Be proud of what you do and achieve Nikki. I can honestly promise you there are an endless number of present and ex patients thinking of their memories of you and how you effected their lives. They'll not forget you. …. ever.xx
  15. Thank you for allowing me to hijack this thread hayes. Had to post about something that, for the first time in my life left me feeling so humbled.xx
