  1. One of the films from Newfield School held by the Yorkshire Film Archive is now online. So, if anyone was there in 1969, you might make an appearnce: Newfield School 1969 If so you could put something in the 'Comments' section.
  2. Does anyone rememer Gregory making any films? I work for the Yorkshire Film Archive, and we have a collection of films he made during the war (educational and training), and some other promotional films, but also one from 1959 that is a mock 'stone age' film clearly involving students of about 15/16 yrs old (and possibly one from 1966 with teenage girls dressed in 18th century costume).
  3. It was filmed from the crowd and is in among a lot of film of people walking in the countryside, including a visit to some well dressings in Derbyshire in 1964. I know it is a long shot to hope to find the person who made it. It came to the YFA in a roundabout way, originally by someone buying some second hand cine equipment from a shop.
  4. I have found out more information since I posted this. In fact it is in the Earl Grey pub on Ecclesall Road with the Mike Shore Imperial Jazz Band. You can see the film on YFA Online, SHORT STOP (1960) with some background information. If you know any more you can add it to the 'Open Space'. It would be great if you do get jazz back at the Broadfield. Do you know the name of the trad band that would have played there about 1980? cheers, Steve
  5. I have just catalogued a home made film featuring some of the West Germany v Uruguay Quarter final match at Hillsborough in 1966 for the Yorkshire Film Archive. We have no idea who made this film; does anyone out there know of anybody who might have filmed this?
  6. the best thing abiout the old metal bins was that you could use the top as a shield.
  7. Hi, if you google 'YFA Online' it should be the first result, and then the film is esay to find either by typing in Myers Grove in the Search bar, or by decade, 1960s. A new batch of films from Sheffield and South Yorkshire will be going onto the site by the middle of July. There is also an Open Space on the site for anyone to leave any additional information or stories relating to the film.
  8. I'm afraid we don't have anything pre-1965, but there is film of a school production of Hobson’s Choice from 1968. The film we have from 1965 has an English Lit. class, an art class, the Cross Country Championships and a puppet show of the court scene from Wind in the Willows. If you have any interesting stories from that time I'll be pleased to hear them.
  9. Hi this is an update on an earlier thread which had a typo in it so anyone searching for Newfield School wouldn't have found it. Here is my original post: [The Yorkshire Film Archive recently obtained nine films from Newfield School, mostly from the 1960s, but including one from 1956 (?), one from 1970 and one from 1977. Does anyone remember these films - either being in them or being involved in making them? They feature school sports and trips out. One in particular, from 1968, features a fashion/needlwork show at the Grosvenor Hotel with clothes made by students from the school.] The films are well made, some are fictional and quite funny. There must be many around who feature in the films and haven't seen them for many years. It would be great to hear from anyone.
  10. Unlike the others, which were made by the school featuring school activities, the 1956 film seems to be more of a personal film by a teacher. This is what our catalogue entry states: 'The film consists of a number of scenes both at home and on holiday capturing different aspects of leisure. Most of these include gardening at home, children playing on bicycles and pogo sticks, family picnics, faculty family bus trips, sailing in Norfolk on the Broads, an amusement park, and scenes of Brighton.' We haven't had this film transferred to another format, but anyone is welcome to visit the Archive and arrange to see any films. The number to call is: 01904 876550 Steve

  12. The Yorkshire Film Archive is putting the film free online next year as part of a general project to put 50 hours of archive film online. In the meantime, anyone is free to view the film at the YFA in York. We would also be very grateful for any information or reminiscences from that time. Here is a brief synopsis of the film: The film starts with exterior shots of the school, and the commentary explains where it is located. There are 1,800 pupils, and some of them can be seen arriving in the morning. The band can be seen practicing before the film shows the chemistry laboratory where the pupils are using apparatus and Bunsen burners. Also documented are an art class and then the library. A bell rings, and girls walk down the corridor, self consciously aware of the camera. They go into the dining hall where they eat lunch. In the sixth form common room the pupils study on their own. There are shots of them working in booths. In the language laboratory, the teacher operates a console while the pupils listen through headphones. In the commerce department girls are learning to type. In the woodwork and metalwork rooms, boys are at work. Girls make pastry and cakes, etc, in the cookery class. Outside, the girls put on a fashion show of clothes they have designed and made themselves. Exterior shots with snow on the ground introduces |The Grove Game|, played each year on Shrove Tuesday between four teams of boys on the rugby ground. This turns out to be a chaotic rugby game with 25 per team. There are matches between staff and pupils, rugby for the men and hockey for the women. At the summer fair, the narrator lists the many activities going on including penny rolling, golf, crockery smashing and swing boats. The event attracts 8,000 people and raises £700, which is to spent on equipment for the school. In May 1970, there is a dinner to celebrate 10 years since the school opened. The guests can be seen arriving, and one of them looks like Roy Hattersley.
  13. Hey, it wa s agreat place, I used to go there regularly, although it was a bit basic. Wasn't it also known as 'Spikey Joe's', named after the cook? Or am i getting it mixed up with the one on Spital Hill?
  14. Does anyone know what might have happened to the films he made?
  15. I worked at Brightside and Attercliffe railway sidings between 1978 and 1982, where, apart from other things, Tinsley wire was loaded and unloaded (before all the steel and engineering works were closed).
