  1. For years I have been paying my ground rent to Coppen Estates by cheque, and for most of that time I have been suggesting to them that it would be much easier if it could be paid by Bank Transfer, saving both them and me postage. They have now finally introduced this means of payment, but say that I must add £1 'administration charge' to the amount due. OK, so it's only a quid, but this seems like nothing other than a money-making scam to me, and totally unjustified.
  2. I could do with an ultra-fast stairlift, one that will get me up to the top before I've forgotten what I was going upstairs for in the first place ...
  3. Does anybody know if Greenways Travel (mini-bus and coach hire, High Green) have gone out of business? I have a provisional booking with them made some months ago, but when I tried to e-mail them with confirmation last night it bounced back as undeliverable. I rang their main phone number and got a BT recorded message "number not recognised" and I tried two mobile numbers I had, both of which said "the number you have dialled is unavailable," or words to that effect.
  4. Did you hear about the lathe operator who sat down on the job and gave himself a nasty turn?
  5. I went to a clairvoyants' evening once. When I got there, there was a notice on the door saying "Meeting cancelled due to to unforeseen circumstances."
  6. Look on the bright side. At least you had already put the kids in the car!
  7. I always go to Dave Green at Wisewood. Apart from a good haircut at a reasonable price, you also get the wisdom of his advice on any subject under the sun, whether you want it or not.
  8. Somebody asked her who taught her to shoplift. "Nobody," she replied, "I just picked it up as I went along..."
  9. Easy peasy, as you say. You want the Coastliner 845 service from Leeds, which goes via Bridlington to Filey. Or if you feel like something different, the 840 goes to Whitby (X40 limited stop and quicker), and the 843 goes to Scarborough. PS: That was meant to be in reply to MZ2832's post.
  10. I came across this topic because I was reading that wonderful book "The Pioneer Ramblers 1850-1940" in bed last night, saw mention of the Sheffield Clarion Ramblers, and decided to do a Google search this morning to see if the club still existed. This thread came up near the top of the page. Although I am a regular walker these days, my first love as a boy/young man was cycling, and I used the Clarion Clubhouse on Dore Moor regularly in the 1950s up to, I think, around 1957. I remember that later on we used to use the Pewit Cafe at Owler Bar (which for some reason we always pronounced 'pugh-it'!), so perhaps that was when the Clarion Clubhouse had closed down. At the time I lived in Doncaster and used to ride out into Derbyshire regularly on a Sunday from the age of eight or nine (seems unbelievable now) with either the Doncaster Wheelers or the Doncaster Section of the Cyclists' Touring Club (Sheffield Dist Assn). When we had been into the Peak District we would stop for tea (baked beans on toast and a mug of tea seem to ring a bell) at the Clarion Clubhouse before continuing on our way home. The return through Sheffield, especially on rainy evenings, quite often saw at least one rider (me on several occasions) get their front wheel trapped in a tramline and come crashing down, most usually in front of the Midland Station where there was a section of adverse camber if I remember rightly. My own recollection (and I am happy to accept that I am probably totally wrong), was that the Clubhouse actually belonged to the ramblers, and that we cyclists were merely allowed to use the facilities. I remember rows of bikes leant against the wall of the clubhouse, piled four or five deep. If yours was at the bottom of the heap, it was easier to delay your journey until some others had left, rather than try and extricate your bike from the tangled mass of handlebars, brake cables, saddlebags, etc. Happy days!
  11. They came right over Fulwood about seven or eight minutes ago. A wonderful sight and sound.
  12. This is the firm that makes the surface used for National Trust car parks, etc... http://www.grasscrete.com/ It drives me crazy seeing all the grass verges chewed up by inconsiderate parkers. Obviously, there will be some people who have no offstreet parking but, by and large, they tend not to be on streets with grass verges. In the area where I live, there are numerous roads with grass verges which have been turned into a quagmire despite the fact that almost every house has a garage plus enough driveway to get one or two additional cars on. The problem is that, when it is a family with two or more cars, people are just too lazy to have to start shuffling their cars around if the one which needs to go out first is blocked in by another car, plus the fact that most people are too lazy to give their garage a good clearout so that it can be used for the purpose for which it was intended. I would definitely welcome any move to clamp down on this inconsiderate parking. It can very quickly turn a reasonablly attractive street scene into an eyesore.
  13. Thank you for the above - I'll take a look at that - and for all the other comments. It certainly seems like Wokmania is a dead duck (Peking?) from our point of view. Is Tokyou near what used to be the old Hole in the Road? It looks most likely that we'll be back at the Noodle Inn. It's a bit inconvenient transport-wise from where we live if we are carrying on into town, but my wife has offered to drive!
