  1. We've been a couple of times recently and really enjoyed it. Really good Italian food, which is clearly freshly made.Rather an old fashioned interior but comfortable and friendly.Reminds me of Dino's on London Road (shut down several years ago and had similar atmosphere and food)
  2. We went early evening recently and had hummus, aubergine salad (baba ganoush) and a few other things.Very nice and very good value. I was surprised how full it was at that time of day. Nice atmosphere too.
  3. Went recently and its lovely inside, 40s themed and really cosy on a miserable day. Good coffee, and they do bee-stings! Hadn't had one of them since Yvonne's bakery on Ecclesall Rd closed. If you've never had one it's a bun with loads of custard in it. Naughty but nice! I think it's a great addition to Meersbrook , especially after the sad demise of the Bohemian.

  6. Buckwheat is gluten free but spelt is a type of wheat, an old variety, so does contain gluten. Spelt has less gluten than many modern varieties of wheat though, so some people who aren't actually coeliac can tolerate it better than ordinary wheat.
  7. I often use wholemeal spelt in baking instead of wholemeal wheat flour and its delicious, a bit lighter, so good for pastry. It is actually an old fashioned type of wheat variety so interchangeable with ordinary wheat, though has less gluten. Makes lovely bread and is thought to be easier to digest for people who have some intolerance to gluten (but no good for coeliacs) Buckwheat is a seed which is not related to any of the common grains so may react differently. It doesn't contain any gluten so wouldn't be able to use it for normal bread making. You may know that its used to make pancakes. I've not made them but have eaten them in France and they have a lovely savoury flavour. Think I'll have to look for a recipe now!
  8. The woods along Totley Brook always an amazing display of bluebells, best that I've seen anywhere
  9. The Portland Works, just round the corner from John St, is really interesting. Went on a guided tour on their open day recently. There's lots of the original industrial features and still some metal workers working there, as well as artists studios. They've got another open day in march. Details on their website: http://www.portlandworks.co.uk/
  10. I'm a bit confused. If the bistro night is on 28th that would be today which is Friday -is that a misprint?
  11. In S8 on Chesterfield Rd both Portofino and the Bohemian are good, with a nice atmosphere for a family meal.
  12. Had a lovely meal here at the weekend. Hadn't been for a while and really enjoyed it. The desserts used to be a bit of a disappointment but there's more choice now and I had vanilla cheese cake which was delicious. I was a bit worried that they'd started serving meat, not because I have any objections to people eating meat, but though they might lose focus on having a good choice of interesting vegetarian dishes, but that's certainly not happened. I had a lovely mushroom stroganoff with lots of different types of mushrooms in it. The meal came to just over £15 a head for 3 courses and coffee, which I think is pretty good for freshly cooked good quality food. I ate at a fantastic vegetarian restaurant in Manchester called Green's recently and wished it was in Sheffield as we're lacking in good vegetarian eating out options here, but after going to the Bohemian this time ,thought it was pretty much as good as Green's and cheaper.
  13. I've been a few times and really enjoyed it. if you look on their website you may still be able to get a 40% off voucher.I like sitting with a view into the winter gardens. Its called Ego by the way, not actually part of St Pauls hotel.
  14. Waitrose has whole preserved lemons in jars which i've used in morrocan recipes
