  1. And it was supposed to be extended along Ecclesall road a few years back... but it'd be too noisy, and damage business if that happened. Allegedly. Based off no evidence whatsoever.
  2. Might suggest asking on ARRSE in their militaria/book section (British Army Unofficial Forums) if you still don't have any luck from any of those sites posted.
  3. Pretty much. Unless you're being difficult or rude to a doorman/barstaff, you aren't going to have trouble.
  4. From my point of view? I'd always use faux glass ones, especially after seeing someone foot with a champagne flute stuck through it. Door staff obligation... if they reduce it to 4, I think that'd be unsafe for staff, and the public. Drinking up time, I'm ambivalent on, I don't see what difference it makes whether thats there or not. Opening til 4am... I don't see how this can be denied on the basis that its too noisy - Viper Rooms is far more noisy, and has a late license til 4am Friday-Sunday, and goes til 6am on Bank Holiday Sundays. In fact, the only clubs/bars that doesn't along that stretch is Babylon and Crystal which I always found a bit odd. The comments made by residents seem to be a bit... odd really. They KNEW when they moved into the city centre that it had the bars there, that they were open late, and were noisy... Yet complain about noise? Shock horror, the main drinking strips will be noisy til 2am-4am Thursday-Sunday at least... I just don't get that.
  5. Funny how you neglected to mention your missus had slapped a member of the door team, or that they were looking at the CCTV in regards to how you acted, not the door team.
  6. Just for further reference - a 11 gallon keg (88 pints) costs between £94.99 and £140. Thats from wholesalers, not direct from a supplier like Carlsberg, or Heinekin who may be cheaper, do refills, etc.. Beer acquisition/supply isn't my area if i'm honest! Means your average pint costs £1.08-£1.59 for the pub/bar. Hence, £1 pints is out of the question.
  7. I don't believe it - I know that its reasonable. Why? As I know how much stock costs, taxes, and all the licenses they have to pay for. Beer is expensive, decent spirits are expensive. Have you ever worked in a bar/club/pub environment? I don't class Amstel or Kronenberg as cheap/crap lager. (Which are around the 3.20 mark in most establishments.). Fosters, yes, is like ****. If you want wine, I suggest you go to a specialised wine bar, not a normal bar/club, as nowhere in sheffield along the main stretches specialise to that extent - as wines aren't the big sellers i'm afraid.
  8. This pretty much.... Which is a huge disappointment really. That phrase regarding Horses and Water is rather accurate here unfortunately.
  9. I'll point to independent venue again... Wetherspoons branches are open all day, and has a LOT of footfall, and has hundreds of venues. Dempseys doesn't have anywhere near the same footfall. And thats nothing to do with drinks prices might I add, its because its a gay bar. Look at how much bars charge on west st and division st for a pint before bringing this up still please.
  10. Possibly, or it could just be taken off the market.. the asking price was a bit daft for the location (Around 30k per annum). The site for that is supposed to be near to the old one if my reports from the sneakybeaky types are correct. Nope. Think they didn't bother with it and assumed that it'd just be able to pull people in by having the name alone. Many places forget that the PR side is so damn important. Only have to look at Viper, they were sending staff out for 2 months before they opened up.
  11. People will buy pints at £3-3.50 a go, as thats the market rate. You can do it with bottles (like carlsberg) to an extent, but not kegs. Mainly as they only last 30 days, and you need to make the money back to be able to buy it again. Bit hard to do that if you were charging a quid for each pint of Amstel.... you'd be making a big loss. Simple as that. I'm assuming you're referring to Lions... that might be because its at the end of town you end up at after going down west st/division st, especially on weekends. Its not about the cheapest drinks.. its about a good atmosphere. If its at the market rate, isn't that good enough? Carver St proves that.
  12. Also, forgot to add... now two of the management from there are working at Viper Rooms. And it seems to be doing very well at pretty much the same prices. And £5-£7 per cocktail (If properly done) is worth it. Can't think of anywhere that does them cheaper apart from on 2-4-1 deals before a set time, like Crystal or Viper. Or if its doing them cheaper, you know to avoid like the plague.
  13. Or it could be the 75p vodka mixers which some venues are offering in York. One side of the river is good, the other (Micklegate) is more like a cheaper version of Carver St. Anyway, going off topic....
  14. But even when it was open during the day... didn't see many people in there, if at all. Its an afterparty venue, not a preparty venue. Same as FWD, same as Fez. Ah, didn't know that. Problem is, that requires having more licenses, more work to be done - for relatively little benefit. They've got enough lager/ale on tap as it is, at least for the sake of logistics, and the size of the bar. Sorry, I meant that its of questionable quality. Ie - the crap that gets you hungover the next day, and is brought for £3 a bottle from a supplier, rather than relatively decent stuff that costs around £10-£14 a bottle (Smirnoff, Eristoff for example) Dunno where you've been drinking in clubs/bars, but most draught lager/ale is around the £3.00-£3.60 mark. (Including wetherspoons...) Don't know how they're doing that in Leeds, as it'll earning them hardly anything per pint/keg sold, so they'll have to be making profit elsewhere. I'm assuming its something like Fosters they're doing that with? And as a regular visitor to Leeds, its more expensive than here, likewise with Manchester... and most bars won't be doing anything that cheap, although theres a few exceptions like the Voodoo Lounge (Student bar) which do. Basically, if you're an independent, not a chance of going that cheap. If you're a chain, you can do it (to an extent.) Wines a difficult one. If you're not a wine drinker, or you're part of a larger chain that are only concerned with how much it costs per unit.. Can't do much. I can't think of many bars that'll do it that cheap though, as most glasses of house wine are £3.50ish. Essentially, these are businesses. They're there to make money. They're struggling enough as it is. They aren't there to give out stupidly cheap drinks. One as it doesn't earn them a lot for the hours they put in, and two it attracts a certain type of crowd.
  15. 3-5 door staff on a bar/club on a saturday night isn't poorly run.... Wouldn't say Viper Rooms was poorly run for having that many staff on. Also its been stated that only 3 on the door were doorstaff, the other 2 were management.
