  1. Hi - I'm looking for any unripe tomatoes that anyone has leftover and doesn't know what to do with. I'd like several pounds if possible, and will use it to make green tomato chutney. I'm happy to pay a small fee for donations, either in money or in jars of chutney once made!
  2. I'm hoping someone can help me - I know there is an old thread but I was looking for any up to date information about metal detecting clubs or groups in Sheffield. It is for a friend who wants to start, and would prefer to do it along with someone more experienced to get them started. If not actual clubs, does anyone detect regularly who wouldn't mind taking a novice under their wing for a bit? I'd also be glad of any information about shops in sheffield selling detectors, or whether people think it is better to hire one to begin with. Thanks for any info - I did find a club listed on the web operating out of a WMC, but it doesn't seem to exist any more despite still coming up on searches.
  3. I'm interested in this too. I've read that there is a wood recycling place at Manor Lodge, but haven't checked it out. I think it's a council run thing, replacing the one formerly on Burton Road. The only tip I have for fellow scavengers is to look around industrial estates. My local one has a lot of pallets and other used wood on. Anything left within access of the pavements, near the bins is okay to take. I've checked this with traders and other scavengers, and apparently this is a generally understood rule.
  4. Yay!! My interest is chiefy flies, and my brother specialises in beetles. In fact, we both started in our teens and used to go to the shows for many years. Recently my brother has been an exhibitor twice a year, and has in effect taken over from the preivous beetle man. I record all local wildlife, and have had some really good entomology finds in the Handsworth and Waverley areas. I'm currently struggling to get a moth trap working.
  5. The other day water started pouring out of the bottom of our boiler. I looked on the forum, and contacted Sam Lovatt who was the most consistently recommended plumber. He was charming on the phone but couldn't help as he isn't gas-safe registered so I asked whom he would recommend in Sheffield. Following his advice I rang Met Gas Services on 0114 404 0001 who came exactly on time just a day later. The man who came was brilliant, quickly diagnosed the fault and, after quickly collecting parts, fitted the new components. It now works perfectly again. The service was quick, efficient, courteous and financially very reasonable. I would wholeheartedly recommend them, and intend to have them back myself to refit our bathroom once the covid crisis is over.
  6. Recommended joiner - Jeff Smith (Joinery Solutions) is absolutely brilliant. He hung 2 difficult doors for us recently - both needed custom glazing, one as new and one as an antique one. Both had stained glass panels to be fitted. He was incredibly helfpul, and he really knows his stuff. The job he did was excellent, we are really pleased. His prices are very reasonable and he's really pleasant to have around - I'd totally recommend him.
  7. Hi - I'm removing a garden shed and base and need to clear the rubbish - it's an 8' x 6' shed, and I think there are sleepers and concrete slabs (not sure how many yet) underneath. I need to clear up within the next week ideally. Could anyone recommend a reasonable and reliable miniskip hire, or maybe a man and van to take them away? I'm in Handsworth S13, quite close to M1 j33. Many thanks for any advice.
  8. There's a really unusual and very pretty little pigeon or dove just outside my patio doors, which I think might be lost or distressed - it doesn't look like a wild one, very, very tame and very hungry. It shows no signs of wanting to go anywhere and I'm really worried about it as we have so many cats - and foxes - come through our garden and they frequently kill birds. I can't see a ring on it - could it still be a special or fancy bird somehow? Please help, I don't know what to do if it stays, and we have a house cat of our own so we can't really bring it inside. Thanks to anyone who responds.
  9. Has anyone got any spare green tomatoes that they could let me have or sell to me for a reasonable price? I want to make a batch of green tomato chutney, and don't have any tomatoes of my own. Price is negotiable, or I can pay you in finished chutney - a unique old family recipe, you won't regret it! I can probably collect - depending how far away! I'd be so grateful, thank you.
  10. Cat now found. Absolutely fine. Was shut in a neighbour's house. Thanks to everyone who saw my appeal and checked their shed or garage.
  11. My mum is desperately worried about her twelve year old lilac point Siamese, Willow, who did not come home last night and is still missing today. I know that cats sometimes disappear for no reason and come home on their own, but as she is very, very worried please could people in the area near Brincliffe Edge Road check their sheds and garages in case he has got shut in somewhere. Thank you very much. Just in case anybody has seen him, please could you pm me. Cheers.
  12. I second Harry O - from what the op says about a "massive sting" - picture here: http://www.dkimages.com/discover/DKIMAGES/Discover/Home/Animals/Invertebrates/Arthropods/Insects/Bees-Wasps-Ants-and-Sawflies/Wasps/Families/Wood-or-Horntail-Wasps/Giant-Wood-Wasp/Giant-Wood-Wasp-1.html
  13. I agree with much of the OP's concern, but would just like to say that restless leg syndrome is not new, and is a genuine and well documented condition causing extremely unpleasant sensations - NOT uncontrollable movements - in the lower limbs. Quisquose's understandable annoyance was more likely caused by an inconsiderate fidget. RLS is a common condition accompanying narcolepsy, which I am a sufferer of, and can also be caused as a side effect of some medications and by low iron levels.
  14. You can go to the jobcentre and ask to see a disability adviser. You don't have to be unemployed, or have lost your job, or be claiming benefits. Why they don't publicise this service beats me. I only found out about it when I was already jobless, but the adviser I saw said that they can negotiate with your employer and offer advice and even financial incentives for them to keep you on, to compensate them for the lost productivity while you recover, or if you can no longer work full hours. If I had known this earlier, I might still be doing the job I've wanted to do all my life.
  15. That's actually a really brilliant idea. You should write to the Royal Mint. They might reward you, too. Seriously, you should.
