  1. Hi does anyone know of someone who could fix my leaky conservatory roof? It's one of the wood and plastic ones. Thanks
  2. Hey you can definitely get Sky to reimburse you the costs - I did this about a year ago but what you have to do is send the BT invoice to Sky and then they take it off your bill over the year so you do have to shell out upfront. However, they see it as an investment as they've then sucked you into their services! I have my line rental with BT but my call costs, Broadband and tv are with Sky so I have two separate bills.
  3. Does anyone know of anywhere that delivers papers in Hillsborough? I used to love getting my weekend papers delivered by the shop opposite the Coop but they don't do it anymore! I know it's lazy but it's a nice luxury at the weekend! Thanks
  4. Hi I think I have a bit of a damp problem in my kitchen and wondered if anyone can recommend anyone reliable to come and have a look and give a quote to sort it out? Thanks
  5. I think they're brilliant. When my car was broken into at Longley, they traced me, called the police for me and stayed with the car to ensure it was secure, and then made sure I was safe and could get my window fixed before moving on. No they can't arrest people but they do get to know people, they gather intelligence and pass that on to the police. If you think your wardens aren't responding then let Sheffield Homes know. It's like all jobs, some people do it better than others so let them know so they can sort it out.
  6. Hi I have an indemnity for my attic room. There are loads of converted attics without building regs approval in Sheffield and the building regs change constantly so what would have passed previously wouldn't pass now. It's best just to check out why it wouldn't pass now. Mine was floor strengthening (this is actually a really cheap job which I got done) and that the ceiling was 1 cm too low - well I can see how low it is and I'm not bothered! My indeminty is for 10 years and also protects me for loss of house value and can be renewed as and when I want. It's really just knowing what is the problem is and making sure it's safe.
  7. No they came to agreement around that time - I remember cos I was on holiday with a postie!
  8. Sorry I can't help - I've been offered a house on the 'green homes' development on the corner of park grange road and guildford avenue and would like to know what people think of the area. My main criteria being is there a decent pub within walking distance? It doesn't have to be anything special, just friendly. I wouldn't want to be hopping on the tram to town constantly. Oh and second criteria, would I feel safe getting a pint of milk after dark! I think these are important measures of a nice place to live!
  9. Hmm I guess you have a point on the first one and I can't really comment on the statistics specifically - only to say that Sheffield has a lot less crime than we expect and a couple of years ago I heard Broomhill had the highest rate of burglaries in Sheffield! Although we could then get into a whole debate about whether people even bother to report crime and then we'll be here forever!!!
  10. I've been on the manor in daytime and at night as I know people who live there and I've worked there. I've never had any problems and nothing has ever happened to my car. I know there are problems up there but I do think that everytime something happens in an area which has a reputation, more is made of it than in other areas.
  11. The answer would be to go via the land registry to find out who the owner is. However, I think she'll struggle - the owner may well be going through the letting agent because they don't know anything about property management and won't be able to let it without one. Also I imagine they'll want references and credit checks. However, after working in housing for years I'm in the process of setting up my own property management business as it's not difficult to provide a good service to landlords and tenants and yet I never hear a good word about agents, so if she does have any luck, I'm willing to offer my services!
  12. Hi indemnity insurance can last as long as you want to and can transfer over to new owners. I've got a 10 year one on my house. However, I could do with some advice - I now want to build an extension which will bring the building inspectors to the house and I'm worred that they will pick up on the other issues which are covered by the indemnity but not got building regs approval (attic and staircase!). One of the conditions of the indemnity is that I can't have rung the council myself. I don't want to get caught out so if anyone else has experience of this, any advice would be very welcome!
  13. Well its nice to see the popularity of Hillsborough, seems pointless to add that I agree! The only downside yet is that I haven't really found a decent local unless I'm prepared to walk the 15 minutes to the barrack tavern so any advice on that from everyone else would be very welcome! But yes definitely buy in Hillsborough and I don't think its overpriced (well no more than the rest of the property market at the moment!).
  14. Hi they won't automatically qualify because of their age. It will depend on their income and savings. The best thing is for them to go to Howden House where they have advisers who will be able to help them. Housing Benefit is not backdated except in very special circumstances so the sooner they apply the better. Good luck!
  15. Housing aid are at Howden House, same place as the homeless section. Unfortunately, the previous post was correct, that they won't get priority until there is actually an eviction warrant. The good news is that once the notice has expired, the landlord does have to go to court for an order to evict. However, there is such a shortage of accommodation in sheffield, that from the time they would get the priority and the time they would have to find another priority, they would find it difficult to find somewhere, particularly in a reasonable area.
