  1. At Notre Dame we had a long school song, with hearts aglow, round banner bright, in serried ranks we stand All ready for the glorious fight Against all wrong For Christs own right to rule our loved land to rule our loved land And in fighting we will sing may our voices gladly ring in homage true to Christ the king to Christ and Notre Dame There are another few verses I wont bore you with, the aboove gi ves the flavour. Sad to say, I remember all the words, but sometimes not what day it is!!
  2. My grandad George Harry Giles worked there from before 1911 (he is a siemans furnaceman in the census) to at least the 1930s. He took out a patent for some nozzles for pouring steel on 20 July 1915, with a Percy William Fawcett. Then in May 1930, he was disabled in an accident there, and received compensation from Firths. He returned to work there but was demoted to labourer. If anyone can tell me any more about him, I would be thrilled!
  3. Did you get anywhere with this ? As a Sheffielder far from home, I would LOVE to hear of something on line!!
  4. My grandad, George Harry Giles (1893-1962) along with Percy William Fawcett had a patent which he took out in 1915 for 'Improvements in Nozzles and Nozzle Boxes for Foundry Ladles or the like and in Appliances and Attachments connected therewith' He was wroking at Thomas Firth and sons at the time ( I think). Does anyone know about this? I have seen the patent and have seen the plans on esp@cenet. Does anyone know about Fawcett and who he was? The story was always that he sold the patent for a song or he would have been a rich man - ??? Hopefully, Karen:)
  5. Hello! You are a bit younger than my Mum was, so you did not overlap with her, she left in 1941. Unfortunately I dis not ask her about teachers before she died. Anyway, thanks for your reply. I am sure it will help some researcher out there eventually.
  6. Thats awesome! I would love to have a copy. My email is karentrinder@googlemail.com, if you could send it as an attachment I would be delighted (both sides if you can) Does your mum in law remember my Mum at all? Any good stories? I really look forward to your reply, Karen
  7. Thanks. The picture is signed as coming from Sheffield and the people in the photo are men and women in army unifrom. I think they were wounded from the Polish Underground Army that she nursed in Sheffield. I thought there might be some record of such nursing during the war
  8. Hi. I know my Dad was down the mines in WW2 - he mentioned knowing Brian Rix. I am not sure of how to go about leasrning more of his war service - any useful ideas anyone?
  9. I am not sure if this counts as 'Polish community' but I thought I'd ask. My Mum was a nurse in Sheffield in WW2 and I have found a photo with a dedication to her from 'Halina Sasko, underground Army Worsaw' dated 25.vi.45. There is a stamp on the back too looks like 'Stalag X3 25 Bopraft'. Can anyone throw any light on this story? Ta.
  10. Thanks for this - I'm sorry your wife is ill. I will keep on trying to find information - would you like me to keep you posted if I make a breakthrough? Karen:)
  11. Does your wife recall anything about my Mum? Mum was born in 1926, so she would have been a bit older - went off to nurse at the City General in 1941 or so. Its great to have a reply even if its a negative, don't you think? Karen:)
  12. Sorry, no, I don't think this is a relative of mine - I have no Arthurs, but its all a bit complex - there was a lot of illegitimacy in this line! Naughty lot!
  13. Can you tell me more about the Giles family you remember? My family of that time were Henriett and George, with children Henrietta May, Thomas Gregory, George Harry and Harold William - all Giles! Here's hoping! Karen
  14. Thanks for this. :confused:I have tried to view the pictures but just got a PDF with lots of BLANK pages! Do you think it has been cleared by someone?
  15. Hi! Did you know my grandad? He was called George Giles and worked at Thomas Firth from about 1911 until he retired. He was a Siemans furnaceman, then a ladleman and teamer, then a labourer. Two notable things he did there -he got a patent for improving nozzles with P Fawcett in 1915, and he was injured in an accident in 1930, for which he was compensated £125. Thats was reduced him to a labourer. I would love to know more about him and his life - he died in the 1960s. Karen:help:
