  1. It all started when Leeds hosted the Indoor League -- Sheffield's been playing cultural catchup ever since!
  2. The University of Sheffield is looking for females with an interest in games to take part in a speech recognition study. We are looking for female voices to spend a half day playing, or learning to play, the tabletop game Warhammer 40,000. *No experience is required*, but any interest in gaming -- computer games or tabletop games -- is likely to make the event enjoyable for participants. (Players of Dawn of War might in particular light to learn about the real life version of the game.) We will record you playing the game, but all data is carefully controlled and is not made available to the general public. We can pay reasonable travel expenses to Sheffield if needed, and provide loads of free food and a teacher who will explain the game to you. If our budget and legals allow, we will try to pay you a small fee too, eg. 20 quid. The purpose of the study is to balance the gender of voices in the data -- we use 40k as it has interesting properties for speech research, but there are not many female players. We will form individual particpants into teams on the day and teach you to play, but we would also welcome groups of friends who would like to learn together as a fun day out, and (especially) any experienced players. Please contact charles.fox@sheffield.ac.uk if you're interested, we hope to record in the next couple of weeks.
  3. Hi there, I'm just playing around with computer remixing, nothing serious, and I have some lyrics and beats that would sound nice performed by a rapper. It's not gangster or street rap, the song's a kind of lament about meeting a friend who went to a fancy school and wondering what life would have been like growing up somewhere far away from the grimier parts of south yorkshire. there are a few longer/scientific words in it which should be relished rather than dumbed down. it's just a fun home studio project but if anyone fancies a go then please let me know and I'll send you the wav and text to record in your own home studio. I know where most of the sylables could land but I'm no rapper myself. I'd like to put it up on soundcloud etc and will of course credit you if that happens.
  4. Thanks -- Old Penistone Road -- that's looking good on google streetview, don't see any signs saying you have to be a customer at the sex shop or anything (if they played their cards right i wonder if they could cater to the passing folding bike trade as well then -- lubricants, vacuum pumps, skintight shorts etc ?)
  5. oh no -- they have put parking meters in hillsbourgh park now ! Does our council really want to crush out any hope of mass car/bike replacement ever happening from the north west ... ?
  6. Greggs the bakers do pretty good sandwich selections (not at all greasy like the sausage rolls) -- have used them for work meetings etc in the past and they've gone down very well. Reasonably priced but high quality.
  7. sorry, should have said I'm driving in from Penistone, which is too far to cycle the whole way (my friend did it once but only after training for months!). Ideally I want to park for free and have a slightly longer bike ride than parking centrally -- surely our council has made some provision for this to encourage us to keep our cars out of the city center ... ? ---------- Post added 07-03-2014 at 16:22 ---------- (actually I suppose the logical place for mass park and cycling from the M1 would be the sheffield wednesday car park on non match days, I wonder if they have a system to allow that?)
  8. >>10 per cent decline in those aged 20 to 24. I'm surprised by this figure -- most days it feels like you can barely move in the city center for all the 1000s of international students filling the streets (and the flats) -- are they included in the number?
  9. hi forum -- Could anyone help to suggest a way to do a combined car and cycle commute to West Street from the direction of Hillsborough? I'm thinking of driving into town on either Penistone Road or through Middlewood and then parking somewhere, getting a folding bike out of the boot and cycling into the city center. I'm not sure where would be the best place to park though, what do you think would be the best location that is free, gives a nice bike ride, and a moderate (but not too strenuous) amount of daily exersize?
  10. It's not too bad once you get the hang of it, takes maybe 30 mins or so to set up. You need a set of refernce notes such as a piano but preferably an electric tuner. the process is: repeat: tune all strings right down to slack adjust tension of springs at the back to best guess where they should be repeat: for strings from fattest to thinnest: tune it UP to the correct note #this will result in the lower strings now being a bit flat until all in tune until all in tune and happy with the spring position (you usually want it set so the trem can pull up a bit as well as push down, depends on your taste.) end Note that at all times, every string is either in tune or flat, they should NEVER go sharp. (If this happens then the algorithm can go on forever without converging!)
  11. We have an unused rehearsal room out near Stocksbridge (30min drive from city center), not been used for a couple of years but good for permanent playng and storing. Please PM me if interested.
  12. as this still comes top of google many years later... theres a free one at http://www.free-postcode-maps.co.uk/postcode-maps/towns/sheffield-postcode-map.php#.UFIPlmaORPw
  13. Yep, I just googled here too and that 0115 number is still working, thanks for replying to the old thread :-)
  14. anywhere on the other side of the M1 from barnsley town center is the classic definition of the nice bits :-)
  15. It was proper good from about 1350 till 1970. Then pretty grim through the 1990s. Apparently they've been trying to smarten it all up recently, the kids all have proper uniforms again now and they are improving discpline with a house system and have all fancy new buildings.
