  1. Ah - that'll do the ozone layer a whole lot of good, burning paint residue.
  2. Deeply unpleasant truths still need to be considered in order to gauge the depth of a problem – it’s not just about being a bit downtrodden. A large number of my colleagues were ‘in town’ in that country when it happened, round about 1992 . . . . there were even representations from UK diplomats in protest, but to no avail. It still happens routinely in several of the Arab countries, and in Iran. I’ve seen awful pictures of a town judiciary in Iran having a truck drive over an 8-year old boy’s arm because he stole a bread roll, and there are plenty of horrific U-tube style pictures of recent stonings of women convicted of ‘immoral’ crimes, like sex before marriage (including being raped). Parts of the world just aren’t nice, I’m afraid to say.
  3. No, you said put it in the bin - your words, not mine, and the bins are emptied out in landfill:
  4. The former, of course. I've read of rape victims in some islamic countries having to provide 4 male witnesses in order to press charges against their attacker - great. I also know of a case in Saudi where a Philipino maid was raped by several Saudi nationals, and they were charged. The judge in the case knew that Allah understood men and women, and that women used their wicked charms to tempt men, and the the poor men in this case were victims of her sultry wiles. They were let off. She - once she'd recovered from her injuries from the rape - was stoned. Mind you, Saudi has entered the modern world - no more public stonings with buckets of hand-held half bricks, it's all done humanely - a Mullah chucks the first brick, and as that hits the victim a JCB drops a couple of tons of boulders on her. That's Islam for you, in all its glory.
  5. It seems imbalanced to criticise others for their light-hearted comments, then to advocate disposing of such chemicals by sending them to landfill when, clearly, they require specialised disposal.
  6. So it is better to have cronies picked by a socialist PM and cabinet to suit their own ends than to have hereditary peers who build a lifetime experience of offering balanced judgement?

Exactly - far more than did Brits. And as for the Falklands, that was a 'private affair' that did not concern the US or require their help - though we were actually offered the use of an American carrier to stage our aircraft, but declined the offer.
  8. Exactly, that's why the Safety Camera Partnership publishes the locations.
  9. Doesn't that summarise the majority of religions in on short sentence? Even more so Islam, which tends to take more literal meaning from its guide book.
  10. Do their governments take great note of the contents of our tabloids?

  12. Well, that's true - we've been a useful forward platform into Europe for the US in military and economic terms for many decades, but we do share a great deal in terms of industry and pubic sector interest as well. I wouldn't blame the Americans for looking after No1 - I certainly would - but I think we still have more in common, and more shared vested interests, than we do with most other nations. And, whether all us us like to admit it or not, they do bail us (and everybody else in NATO) out militarily all the time. That's got to be worth a little bit of thanks.
  13. Why should they originally have become involved in a European conflict? When they did get involved, they bailed out the rest of the world and we all owe them a huge debt of thanks for the fact that we weren’t over-run . Of course, a misguided left-winger can’t see things quite so clearly, can he? Nothing wrong with that – thinning out left wing activists who have no place in Western society, and sod their so-called human rights. Let them take their cry for human rights to a communists state and see how far it gets them there. Of course it was – that’s exactly how they learned and why they would have been far more prepared to fall back on updated emergency relief plans, based on lessons learned. That’s how it works. Which policies are they? Just how is America a threat to the UK? Are they likely to pout up the price of iPods, or is there something even more demonic heading our way? Please enlighten me!

  15. So King Richard and the Crusaders could not have been Christians, because they killed? People who died bravely defending their own nations from Nazi oppression, and killed in so doing, could not have been Christians? How do you explain that to a military padre? Weren't the members of the Inquisition Christians too? I think if you'd have questioned their faith just because they killed a few hundred thousand people, you'd have found yourself tied to a wooden post with a few bundles of sticks at your feet. And it would have been lit by very dedicated Christians.
