It was a hit & run. I've no idea where the Tab got the idea it was a shooting from, presumably thin air. They've edited it now to take the made up stuff out. Not much left, if I'm honest. -
PRIVATE EYE and SIV, SHEFTIVAL & SCARBOROUGH!
mikeyproduct replied to Stocksboy's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
More confusion over who exactly is paying for the Scarborough Spa refurb. Scarborough Council say it's SIV, SIV's website says it's SIV. Steve Brailey, CEO of SIV says it's Scarborough Council. Awkward. http://www.sheffieldpolitics.com/blog/2013/9/14/whos-paying-the-700k-bill-for-siv-scarborough -
English Defence League Rally

To be fair, from conversations I had with some people at the march yesterday, the EDL group wasn't as regimented as all that either. -

Some Canon 550D, some iPhone 4S. Should maybe get a shoulder brace, but I prefer the shake to the bulk...I like me some freedom of movement. -

I obviously can't say that you were part of it, but there was a small group of people who came to Barkers' Pool at about 12.20pm and were involved in arguments with police after being prevented from laying flowers on the memorial. Again, not saying it was you, but several members of that group did return about half an hour later with the EDL march. Some video and photos I took yesterday here, if anyone's interested: http://www.sheffieldpolitics.com/news/2013/6/1/pictures-edl-march-and-anti-fascist-protest -
Sheftival £180k loss fiasco
mikeyproduct replied to E-Man Groovin's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
Can't imagine how that article might have got there...*innocent face* -
SIV's argument for Sheftival not costing the taxpayer any money is that the ex-council venues are paid for through the council subsidy only. Any other venues or ventures are, according to SIV, entirely separate, and have no bearing on the council venues. In that model, any profit coming from Scarborough would be kept in SIV. Withdrawal of the council subsidy for a venue would still lead to its closure. Only sticking point in this is that in the founding documents of SIV/SCT, there's a line that says if the trust makes a profit, they should pay back some of the council subsidy. Rather inconveniently, this suggests to me that the £180k losses from Sheftival *did* (albeit indirectly) come out of the public purse.

SIV have launched an "internal review" into the management of Sheftival...but the council won't say if the report will be made public, or give a timescale. http://www.sheffieldpolitics.com/news/2013/3/25/internal-review-to-be-launched-into-180k-flop-festival-management-and-more-questions-about-when-the-council-were-told Do we think that's good enough?

Can anyone give me a source for this £32k on catering figure? Has that come from the council? I'm in the process of investigating this for Sheffield Politics (see http://www.sheffieldpolitics.com/blog/2013/3/24/sheffield-council-admit-failed-festivals-losses-were-ten-times-the-figure-they-gave-19-days-ago) and I've got hold of the SLC budgets for the last few years. Can't see anything like that figure, and haven't as yet been able to find where it came from. Can anyone help?

Very good question, and it hasn't been explained well by the council. To put it simply, the council's budget is split in two. The revenue budget, which is spent on services, wages etc. and the Capital budget which is spent on buildings and repairs. Because of government rules, much if not all of the money that comes in from the sale of capital assets (buildings) has to be spent on the capital budget. The town hall refurb is funded from the capital budget, money which couldn't be used to keep Don Valley open.

In a letter to tomorrow's Observer, Julie Dore along with the leader of Newcastle council and the Mayor of Liverpool have issued a startling warning that cuts will directly contribute to the "breakup of civil society", rising crime and civil unrest in northern cities. http://www.sheffieldpolitics.com/news/2012/12/29/deeper-cuts-will-cause-civil-unrest-says-dore It's all pretty apocalyptic stuff. Verging on Walking Dead territory. So what do we reckon? Cuts to cause zombie apocalypse? Or will it pass us by like the Tottenham riots did? Are we all just too lazy and downtrodden these days to bother? Anyone got any fight left?
