  1. Thanks for the info catanfan. I paid Patriot Games a visit on Monday. The guy who served me was very knowledgable and helpful. I bought Arkham Horror which is FAB! I'd love some Talisman expansions as well but I think I'll have to wait until next payday. I could spend a small fortune in there! Oh and I play badminton on Tuesdays, so board games would have to be another night...
  2. There's a student festival called "Inter Varsity Folk Dance Festival" which has just been held in Sheffield. (I didn't go but a work colleague is involved in the organisation of it). They've got the names of the bands that played on their website here: http://www.ivfdf.ceilidhsoc.org/mainevents I don't know if this is helpful at all? I don't know what any of the bands are like though!
  3. Ah damn, that's disappointing about Number 1's. Their food was yummy.
  4. You can play at Ponds Forge without having to join a membership or anything. Just play when you want for a one-off game. The only drawback is that it can be quite difficult to book a court sometimes.
  5. I'm so pleased that I've seen this thread. I've been wanting to buy the expansions for the Talisman board game but I'd rather be able to buy them from a shop rather than ordering over the internet. Nothing against the internet, it's just sometimes when I'm in the mood for something I want it straight away! I'm also unlikely to be at home when an internet order is delivered. I never knew about this shop, Patriot Games. Thanks for the info. I will be paying them a visit! I'm a little confused why these types of fantasy/sci-fi board games aren't available from other high street shops that sell board games? I know that board games have got their work cut out to compete with console/computer games but are the likes of Talisman and Settlers of Catan just not mainstream enough to be sold in high street shops?
  6. It's been a while since I've been near Number 1's: I thought it was closed for refurbishment and not permanently closed? Does anyone know if it's open again? I think their food was nicer than Jumbo's, but agree with someone else's post that I saw somewhere, that Number 1's has a bit of a strange feel to it because it's in one big room, so there's a bit of a lack of atmosphere.
  7. It's incredible how quickly things have advanced on. Just thinking about computer games from the basic "ping pong" game to the games nowadays which have incredible complexity and amazing graphics which look almost as realistic as watching the real thing. I did grow up without a mobile phone or the internet (and I hand-wrote letters to friends and family when I was at Uni) but we still managed to meet up with friends and knew what was going on. Having said that I would hate not to have a mobile phone now (with its internet access)! There is something addictive and compelling (and very convenient) about having INSTANT access to friends and information at any time, wherever you are and wherever they are. So, overall, I don't think I would want to go back. But in the back of my mind, I think that if we HAD to go back, at least I know it wouldn't be quite as much of a shock to the system for me as it would be for younger generations!
  8. I finally got my certificate through for this the other day. That took a while! Can't believe it was as long ago as 25th July 2010! It was a bloomin warm day that day but good fun.
  9. I'm not convinced we're going to have enough people to break the world record which is a real shame. I hope I'm wrong! Here's hoping for nice weather. I don't fancy trying to bounce on a wet space hopper! I'm already wondering how good my balance is going to be, never mind the hazard of a slippy space hopper!
  10. Anyone else signed up for Bounce For Sheffield? Only 6 days to go! Let's get bouncing!
  11. Thank you for your replies you clever lot you!
  12. In a moment of madness I signed myself up for this! I haven't been on a space hopper for goodness knows how many years! I agree that it doesn't seem to have been advertised very well. Unfortunately I read on Twitter last night that they are still quite a bit short of participants in order to break the world record. So here's my plug: It's actually NEXT sunday, 25th July at Don Valley. So come on Sheffielders, we've got a world record to break! Let's put Sheffield on the map after our disappointment of not winning the UK City of Culture recently. So get signed up! Let's raise some money for the very worthy charities of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, the Cavendish Centre and Yorkshire Cancer Research and of course beat the world record. You know you want to!
  13. Yeah I was thinking that it sounded somewhat religious (hence why I looked through 150 psalms!). So it could possibly be a hymn perhaps. Now, where might I find an 18th century hymn book?! I think the church he is buried in is an Anglican church. I'm not going to stop until I've exhausted all avenues of investigation and then I'll conclude that perhaps he wrote it himself before his death or his family wrote it for him.
  14. Great! Thanks for your replies. You've given me some more food for thought. I thought it was quite a nice piece. I hope he would be pleased that his 8 times great granddaughter is reading it 244 years later! I was never very interested in family history but my Mum has been heavily researching ours for quite a few years now. However, I've started to become much more interested in it recently. It's all my Mums hard work that she's found his gravestone. I'll pass onto her what you've written!
  15. This is written on the gravestone of my 8 times great Grandfather who was born in 1714 and died in 1766. I'm not even 100% sure it's a poem by a real poet or whether it was something his immediate family wrote when he died. However, from what I vaguely remember from school, is it written in iambic pentameter?! Does anyone recognize this: "While nature's wants the well earn'd bread supplies The Oppressor's Grandeur and his Power dispise For what avails, when laid with Mother Earth Tove boafred once of Title, Wealth or Birth Worldly Distinction vanishes with breath But good Men's glory, only dawns with Death" I've tried googling it to no avail. I've tried looking at works of 18th century poets and not found anything yet. I've even looked through 150 psalms at the end of a copy of the New Testament and Psalms that I have (incidentally I'm not religious, I was given it in school!). Any help would be gratefully received as I can't seem to give up trying to work this out!
