  1. Like the Co-op? Much missed. In my opinion a huge loss to Hillsborough. Hillsborough has many shops but no where where any one actually wants to shop. When I think food shopping in Hillsbrough I think butchers (a couple of good ones) and a bakers (Brooks) after that it's not so great. I've shopped many times in local greengrocers and they've been terrible (manky veg). If you want people to shop local raise your game! Stock fresh produce and be more freindly to your customers. They can be right misersable sods in the shops in Hillsborough.
  2. You won't find Boddingtons in pubs anymore. Cask ale production stopped last year, though the quality had already gone downhill by then anyway. You can still get cans in supermarkets but it's not the same stuff it used to be. Sad story really as it was a nice pint, but a huge global company bought them out, shut down down the brewery and destroyed both the brand and the quality.
  3. Similar story on our road in the centre of Hillsborough - Doctors/Teachers/Managers, etc. There are obviously quite a few of us, and I think the point is that we're not being given the chance to spend our money locally on some of the things we like to buy, so we're forced further afield, which is both a shame and an inconvenience. Yes, I'll be buying branded goods from B&M if they're cheaper than elsewhere, I'd be daft not to, but I'd also like the chance to buy some nicer bits and pieces that are only available from shops like M&S/Waitrose. I'd personally love a small M&S and judging by comments both on and off this forum, there would be a decent level of custom for it. I'd find it hard to believe that anyone could think that you can get the same quality from B&M/HomeBargains/Heron/etc that you can from M&S.
  4. Whilst I agree that it is better to support small independent businesses, and the quality is often far better than supermarkets, unfortunately they are only open during 'normal' working hours. When I return home from work at 6.30pm these smaller shops are all closed. I hate giving my money to Tesco et al, but at least they're open when I need to shop, as was the Co-op.
  5. I don't understand why this thread has been moved when it was merely a discussion about the possibility of a new business establishing itself in Hillsborough, not about a current 'going out' venue.
  6. Perhaps the restaurant formerly known as Vida Loca opposite Rawsons? Not sure it's big enough though. Wherever, it will be a good addition to the area.
  7. I think this is a sad day for Hillsborough, particularly for the co-op staff who have been displaced. Say what you like about the co-op - and it was far from perfect - but it was extremely useful to have a general store right in the centre of Hillsborough. (I don't consider Morrisons or Asda to be in the central shopping area of Hillsborough). It is quite unusual for a suburban shopping centre, particularly the size of Hillsborough, to be without a general supermarket. And to be replaced by another cheap shop selling a strange mix of products is just another nail in the coffin. Hillsborough is caught in a downward spiral of increasingly downmarket shops, and with this image it will never attract the more high quality shops many of us would like to see. Not eveyone in Hillsborough wants the cheapest option, and so are forced to spend elsewhere.
  8. If you want to DIY, I'd recommend getting a jar of Goddard's Silver Dip. I had a lot of silver jewellery that had lost its shine, but it came out sparkly and new looking after 30 seconds in this. A quick google search shows it's available from some major supermarkets, plus online at Amazon/Ebay, and it's around £4.00.
  9. Hi Julie Your cupcakes are gorgeous, they look lovely! I love the boxes of brown/grey/pink - so stylish. Personally, I don't think they're overpriced. The mass producers may well be able to sell them cheaper, but as anyone who's ever tasted a supermarket cupcake knows, they taste of nothing. I would happily pay a couple of pounds for a homemade cake, which I know will taste delicious in comparison. The snag is, how does anyone find out about you? And how do they actually get hold of the cakes? If I did stumble across your FB group and I wanted a dozen cakes, how do they get to me? Do I have to pick up or do you deliver. This isn't clear. You're obviously a creative person with a talent for cake design. Perhaps you could try finding local businesses that you can supply to or partner with. E.g. local cafes/shops to supply to, or by being recommended by wedding venues/planners to provide cupcakes for weddings. Given your talent for cake making and decoration you might want to consider more traditional wedding cakes as well as cupcake towers - there will always be a huge market for wedding cakes. Weddings are one of the few markets that have defied the recession - people will always want to get married. Whatever you decide, I do think you need your own website. This doesn't have to be expensive, there are many sites where you can easily build your own website with an online shop for just a few pounds a month. This is a tough climate, but don't give up!
  10. I would also recommend Jeff Smith for any joinery work. He hung three internal doors for me last week, plus put new skirting in an awkwardly shaped bay window. Prompt, friendly, tidy, and really cares about doing a good job. Would definitely use again.
  11. Please excuse me if this has already been discussed on another thread, but when there are human barriers operating on the bridge are there also human barriers at each of the entrances at the front of the station?
  12. Hi Don't know if you've found anything yet but would definitely recommend New Image at Hillsborough. They have a new floor dedicated to occasion wear including matching hats, bags, shoes, etc. My mum has been searching everywhere for a motb outfit so I took her there and she was spoilt for choice - and now has a gorgeous outfit! http://newimage.50webs.com/newimage/index.htm
  13. Hi I'm having my cake done by Truly Scrumptious Cakes. http://www.tscakes.co.uk/ Karen is the lady that makes them and she works from a studio kitchen in Wortley. She's very flexible and will make any design you want.
  14. Hi Can anybody recommend a cake maker/designer? I don't seem to be able to find many in Sheffield. Ideally I'm looking for someone to copy a design I've seen in a magazine. Thanks.
  15. Hi Has anyone got any recommendations for an independent mortgage adviser/broker please? Thanks.
