  1. I've been trying to find information about a housing charity which operated back in the early 1970's. I've had absolutely no luck whatsoever. I think the name of the charity was SMACHA (Sheffield mother and child housing association). I believe that the address of this particular house was 5 Broomhall road. It was a beautiful house which had been converted into about 7 bedsits along with communal area's purely for single mothers and their babies. Back in those days there was a firm of solicitors (Graysons) who were patrons, along with others. I would appreciate any memories from anybody who knew of this wonderful charity and the work that they did. Thanks in anticipation.
  2. They are probably harlequin ladybirds. They are not native to this country and are a threat to our indigenous ladybirds. They also stain your furnishings.
  3. Please check out "Harlequin" ladybirds. These are thugs and not native to the UK. They are a threat to our indigenous ladybirds and if you squash them they do cause a mess. These are more then likely the ones that you are finding in your homes.
  4. Our neighbour never bothered even notifying us of his intentions to extend his property very close to our boundary. This was despite there being covenants written into both freeholds (ours and theirs) that nothing could be built onto the side of our detached houses and that the 8ft on either side had to remain clear. He went ahead all the same but I wonder if there will be problems now when we come to sell our house. It would be awful if he had to pull his extension down. I've not made an issue of it for the sake of neighbourly relations.
  5. Our tortoise is quite picky with his food but does eat dandelions and some veg. He loves cauli and broccoli and also satsuma's, strawberries and other soft fruit. He eats the cats food as well. I also give him dried food because of the nutrients and as already mentioned....cuttlefish. I leave a whole cuttlefish for him to lick but I add powdered nutrients to his fresh stuff. He likes the leaf off apple and lilac trees and succulent plants along with a whole host of other plants and flowers. Chrysanthemum leaves....petunia flowers. The list is endless really but I did read that orange fruit like pumpkin helps prevent worms so I always give him pumpkin come Halloween and he seems to like it. I also give him dried apricots which I finely slice and he loves those. Mine is very particular with his dried food and will only have T-Rex which I buy off e-bay. I'm ready for some more but to be honest I bought a big tub a few years ago so I'm hoping the original seller is still there. He was a font of knowledge and had his own group which I joined but haven't been active for about 10 years now. I also always make sure there's a constant source of clean drinking water and also a couple of times a week in the warmer weather he has a bath. Just a tray with some luke warm water in it. He loves that and not only drinks but also relieves the other end. The trick is to splash his back before he releases. lol. The water only covers the base part of the shell so not too deep. Hope this helps but if you watch and try different things you will soon find out what they like and don't like. Believe me......a tortoise is a very intelligent and stubborn animal and not the slow/stupid things that people might imagine them to be. Mine follows me around like a little dog but hisses at hubby. lol. He's also very partial to exposed toes and won't hesitate to taste them. lol
  6. No, that isn't the one. It must be the other group and they will accept your request soon. You will see him when accepted. There are 2 boys and they are gorgeous.
  7. If you do contact the owner.......Louise.......please tell her that Carol (off facebook) has pointed you in her direction after seeing your post on Sheffield Forum.
  8. There are 2 beautiful boys for sale on the facebook page "pets for sale in Barnsley/south Yorkshire". Solid pedigrees and after speaking with the owner I can say that she knows her stuff.
  9. Oh dear........I'm wondering who it might be now! As others say though.......take no notice and continue enjoying your walk. It's a lovely walk and I must get back to doing it regularly like I used to do. I always say hello to people as we pass and there's only one old fella with his few dogs who is a grumpy old so and so and lets his dogs run loose. Locals will know who I mean. lol.
  10. I'm still here since April 2005 but being the quiet sort I doubt I'll be remembered. I don't visit as often as I used to though.......just pop in now and again to see what you are all up to.
  11. I am so wishing that I hadn't pre-booked 4 adult tickets for December 10th now. It's supposed to be a special day out for four of us but maybe I did the wrong thing. I hope not but it's too late now. :-(
  12. I'm still here but don't pop in as much as I used to do. I joined in April 2005 but I bet I'm not really missed. ;-)
  13. April 2005 for me. I only pop in now and again these days.
  14. Hi FIRETHORN1. I find exactly the same thing as you and I was beginning to think it might be down to my aging tastebuds. I find the only ones that taste like prawns used to taste are those from the seaside or Aldi's frozen ones. If you haven't tried Aldi's then I can recommend them. Good luck. :-)
  15. Sorry you don't like our new shopping centre. It won't suit everybody but I personally love it as do a lot of the locals and those from out of town as well. I hardly notice the music but I certainly don't find it "tinny". Again......each to their own. You are certainly right in saying it's a lovely development though and perhaps one day in the future you might decide to visit again but if not then I think it will be your loss.
