  1. If you don't like Wasabi Sabi, Wagamama's will be vile!!! I love Wasabi Sabi though - The campo lane one is a sushi bar? Is there a main restaurant part too? Best Japanese in region is Little Tokyo at the back of the House of Fraser in Leeds... Only reason to go to Leeds
  2. Rabbit is lovely, low in fat and easy to cook! I get mine from a bloke with a stall in Doncaster fish markets - shot in Donny (and sometimes Norfolk?), not China Nice and plump too! Only about £3 and you can get a couple of meals out of one too! Boil bones afterwards and make a soup Have to say that I have never seen them in Roney's but I know they do do a bit of frozen game... In Doncaster they are fresh
  3. Years ago I was ina car with a female work colleague, and we were run off the road near Rotherham by a loser who thought he was ace - he ended up in court though as she took his reg down... Sadly some guys need to feel like men purely through absuing women... Did you get his reg? I have similar issues with male cyclists - many can't stand a woman to overtake them, practically give themselves heart attacks trying to catch up with me afterwards!!!
  4. Ibis are clean and cheap - you can book two nights in them for less than £100 if you book online... You can't get a refund if you cancel tho:(
  5. Always believed that the inital public investment was due to the public element of the development? No longer so??? Can't expect those living there to pay for the development of the bars/cafes etc... Obviously there is a chance I guess now that the development will be slowed down (as all other Sheffield developments are being, by all accounts) due to the recession... Still, the development is not a council one, which seemed to be the worry for the OP... Chavs and their expenses etc being the view from the window...
  6. Would have thought that Post Offices were more relevant than ever now that we are all glues to the internet, and buy and sell so much on ebay...
  7. I think that if you were 17 now, you'd still have a great time on Divsion Street... Things move on, and that's where you'd be having your weekends now...
  8. If we are talking Hiram Wild, they were sold about 10 years ago by John Wild, and the new owners ran the business into the ground... The last site was opposite Hallam fm on Herries Road... John Wild is still alive I believe? Wealthy family - I am sure you will know if this is the family you are related to though! There have been many 'little mesters' and perhaps your relatives are from those? Try at Cutlers Hall for their registers...
  9. I used to work for Hiram Wild - Before it shut down about 6/7 years ago - They bought their blanks from Nickel Blanks, same as all other Sheffield cutlers in last few decades... They also made their own blanks up for cheaper, more basic cutlery (such as stuff made for NHS)... Sadly there is a well known company in Hathersage that stamps 'Sheffield' on far east blanks that have been only finished there No doubt they offer a true UK product, but the bulk is cheap tat buffed to a higher spec than it needs to be... Hiram's also had the last blade forge - not sure who runs this now? The sales team from Hiram's went to Arthur Price/George Butler in Handsworth...
  10. The ones that aren't sold outright to a buyer will be shared ownership - they are having cafes and bars etc down there too... I agree that the building was a eyesore, but it might perk up yet! It's the only one of it's scale in the UK and was built by a high profile architect - I have seen some of his flats in Europe and they all look better than the Sheffield ones as they are not black! Always built previously in nicer / cleaner cities than ours anyways... Hope that Urban Splash sandblast the thing before they start rebuilding... I wouldn't waste time trying to get a building that is thought to be so important in the architectural history of the country delisted... Looks like you either move house or learn to love it!
  11. I ALWAYS buy clothes in a vintage style, but not always the real thing, as it's so hard to find!!! I buy most of my items from Langtons - upstairs there they have a stall that sells American 1940's /50's hats, and I have been lucky on several occasions in finding lovely dresses there too! At Christmas I bought a lovely grey silk wiggle dress for £30 - Not a mark on it I have also attended a few of these 'vintage' fairs - the DQ ones are ok if you are 16 and only have a fiver to get your hands on some sub 'Human League' C&A tat... The one that goes to the gallery/student union has these stalls too, but they also attract a few genuine vintage retailers... Celia's in Nottingham always sold the stuff that Priestley's in York always wanted £100's for, for more like £40-£50... I also buy repro from various websites - I would never buy true vintage online, as you have no idea what you are buying til it's arrived - you really need to examine a 40's/50's piece to make sure it's in good condition... Many repro companies are US based, but Vivien of Holloway and Big Beautiful Barbara Brown are two notable UK companies that will make you a lovely new 'vintage style' piece... Cow et al in Sheffield are terrible disappointments! How hard can it be to get proper vintage items in a city centre location? That said, when I was a student I used to get 60's/70's stuff from Aflecks in Manchester/Freak Boutique in Sheffield and Celia's in Nottingham, so I guess I might be tempted by 80's stuff if I was 18 now! Not sure though - the 60's stuff I used to buy were all good fabrics, well tailored etc - you don't see much of that in the 80's stuff you see in Cow etc... As far as buying, if you look at Blue Rinse in Leeds and Aflecks/Cow now, the better stuff tends to be German! A guy I know who used to deal bought in bulk by weight from Europe - he used to throw away half the stuff he bought, but always found that he more than made his money on the other half...
  12. It's being renovated by a Manchester based property development business/architects - No cost to the tax payer, as the flats will be private when finished - try not to worry so much
  13. I'm from Nottingham, and when I first arrived here I heard two very distinct Sheffield accents - One is a more 'Sean Bean' type one and the other more 'Jarvis Cocker' - Basically -, one more typically Yorkshire to outside ears, the other more nasal and a bit less 'broad' but still very obviously Sheff... Someone posted on here that the Yorkshire accent is supposed to be nice, that's why they build call centres here... Call centres are all over the country - Glasgow, Liverpool etc... Not especially easy on the ear either!
