Sorry to jump on this thread. I was looking for places to buy a solar filter for my SLR camera in Sheff, but didn't find anywhere I would seriously advise against pointing any type of camera right at the eclipse (even at the maximum coverage). The sensor is very likely to be permanently damaged! Proper solar filters block out over 99% of the light. You could, in theory, just use the solar eclipse glasses and hold them over your camera-phone lens; that should work. However, it seems that they're pretty hard to find at the moment. Either way, good luck! Look after your eyes and your camera's sensor

Williamson Hardware in Broomhill threatened
Andy78 replied to IRONMONGER's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
It's the only shop within a few square miles that sells the sort of things that locals need. A lot of people in Broomhill (including myself) don't have a car. having a shop in the area for household goods is a godsend. It's not magical or special, just very useful. A Sainsbury's local will sell even less than Eurospar does. It will probably not be any cheaper. So simply put: Another local-type supermarket will bring no benefit to the local area/people. The loss of a popular hardware store will be to the detriment of the local area/people. Sorry to drag this thread back up; I've only just come across it. I'm also quite sad that Broomhill is slowly losing it's individuality. -
The Times starts PC bans Xmas seasonal reports
Andy78 replied to Wildcat's topic in General Discussions
Ahhh, that's not the point though. The point is to moan about stuff that really doesn't affect their lives. God forbid that they may one day look around and think 'wow, I'm lucky to live in a place that's pretty good really.' If all people have to complain about is trivial things like the naming of Christmas lights, then they really are quite lucky. Although they don't seem to realise it. -

Here's a quote from the guy who came up with the idea. Take from it what you will: http://pigsonthewing.wordpress.com/2008/10/30/winterval-the-truth/ -

You're right Ruby. The Winterval idea was just to keep people spending outside of the normal Christmas shopping period. The Christmas lights were still there, and happy/merry Christmas signs were still there. After living in Birmingham, I can confirm that Christmas was not banned. Even the town hall had a massive merry Christmas sign on it. But people do love a good moan, don't they? But, like you, I personally am not concerned with the Christmas side of things, as I'm not Christian. I do, however, appreciate the winter holiday time. I think that we need the break to catch up with family and friends. I couldn't care less what the period is called, as long as we have it. -

Relationships - are they all they are cut out to be?
Andy78 replied to Avalon's topic in General Discussions
I've been in similar situations a few times. Although I would be happy for the other person, it's hard not to hold some jealousy. However, I know that jealously is my problem to deal with alone, and shouldn't affect the way I am with people. I've found that the jealousy does pass. Sometimes it's too easy to think that a relationship is everything you need. So much so that you forget about the good things in your life. The good things pass you by, sadly. -

We'll probably be too oblivious to notice. Surely the reason for having kids isn't to ensure your security in later lifer? -

I'm not planning on having children as I don't have a womb. I also think there's far too many kids who are parentless. So, I would consider adopting in the future, if that were possible. Although this is not a concern at the moment, I do worry that by the time I'm 50 odd, I'll feel that something is missing in my life. At that point I might just disappear travelling to look for some alternative life satisfaction, to prevent me from growing old miserably. -
A kid asked me last year: 'Penny for the Guy?' I thought it was a great deal. Gave him a penny, and took the Guy They've been a penny for as long as I can remember. The price not even rising with inflation.

Why do people assume Guardian readers are Labour supporters?
Andy78 replied to epiphany's topic in General Discussions
I could mention that your sample group is negligible, and your conclusions are based on conjecture. But I can't be bothered saying that, so I wont. From those that have replied to your thread, not one Guardian reader seems to fit your stereotype. Unless they're all hiding in a delusional bubble somewhere, praising Gordon Brown, of course. -

Perhaps a poll would have been useful here. In fact, are there any Guardian readers here who do vote Labour? -
Why do people assume Guardian readers are Labour supporters?
Andy78 replied to epiphany's topic in General Discussions
I've been known to read the Guardian a lot as well as other papers. Of the people I know, an awful lot read the Guardian. However, I can't think of one that supports new labour, including myself. Although it's daft to generalise the whole readership of a paper, I would suggest that the Guardian leans to the left, unlike new labour. So, I don't really see why its readership would generally lean towards a middle-right party. -
Why do some men choose to have a ponytail?
Andy78 replied to boutiquechoc's topic in General Discussions
I used to have long hair, had it shaved off when I joined the navy, kept it short and spiky for a few years, and more recently grew it long again. When it was shaved, my head looked like a peanut. When it was spiky, it took ages to style and cost a lot in haircuts/hair products. I actually find it easier to manage when it's long. I wear it out, or tied back depending on my mood. I've noticed that this is not unique to myself or men generally. I'll let you into a secret that I discovered to avoid these problems. I wash my hair, and from time to time, have it trimmed. It really does work wonders. Although, some people may find men with long hair offensive, I really couldn't care less. Anyone that makes sweeping judgements based on a haircut would probably not interest me as a person. -
