Started work at queens road. STD transport in 1959. canteen 5 shillings for a weekly ticket. at least 8 canteens around the transport garages then quite a few more when Rotherham and Doncaster were incorparated into SYPTE. Later worked at a company who moved around and do remember the pit canteen at Rossington really good. all canteens were well subsidised until the accountants started looking at the bottom line I should think most workers really on mobile sandwich vans or the other outlets arround the suburbs.

What did we earn in the 1970's?
dennisgwild replied to wrinkly67's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
In the mid 60s Harold McMillan predicted that the average income would be 1000 pounds per annum. He was ridiculed but this turned out to be about right for the early 70s until the oil producers quadrupled the price of oil 73/74. This had the effect of pump prices rising as I remember from around 35p to 75p a gallon and that was when inflation took off. by the way I was running a petrol Landrover. at 12 to the gallon Hillsboro got it right because towards the end of the 70s. 5k was within a lot of workers earnings -
