  1. I'm a junior doctor and it is not much fun at all. The career prospects are going down the toilet with the rest of the NHS as our current inept government clogs up the healthcare system with red tape, spending money on pointless bureaucracy and making it increasingly difficult for us to do the job. The money seems good but is peanuts compared to what I could get by using my degree to get a City job. However I am not driven by money and, despite my obvious cynicism, some of my alturistic values are preserved. Hence, like many UK docs, I am looking forward to leaving it all behind and moving to Oz or NZ
  2. Great letter, another group of people who say the funniest things are those who spend large amounts of time composing paragraphs consisting largely of mis-spelled and inappropriate 'big' words in an attempt to appear ever so clever.
  3. HBA1C is a measure of your AVERAGE blood glucose over the preceeding 8 weeks, with a target of 6.5-7.5%
  4. That is not what I implied at all, rather that there is a recognised progression to use of drugs such as heroin, colloquially known in the UK as hard drugs. Re the references I would need to look them up which I'm not about to do now with work tomorrow, but if you search Medline you should be able to find plenty of information to interest you
  5. Minnime what would you like to know? As for the alcohol, cigarettes thing, yes drug users tend to use these as well, but they are not relevant to the discussion, which is on the topic of illicit, ie illegal, drugs
  6. Putting on weight due to stopping smoking is a myth. People often put on weight when they give up because they eat more to compensate. Just find other things to get rid of the cravings.
  7. The Parkway heading towards the motorway is esecially bad at the moment
  8. Makes it a no-brainer really, stopping smoking is the one achievable intervention that would have the greatest impact on the nation's health if everyone managed it. Unfortunately the government cannot afford for that to happen right now!
  9. Bob, please fix all the roads in and around Crookes/Broomhill and provide lots of free parking. When you have finished that you will be more than capable of sorting out the situation in the Middle East and world hunger in general! Seriously though some pothole attention would be much-appreciated
  10. Not trying to look clever or anything but I've got an RCGP (Royal College of General Practioners) diploma in substance misuse and have written several book chapters on the subject. I spend one day each week seeing only patients using illicit drugs. Anything I have said is based both on my own clinical experience and on convincing medical evidence, the references for which you are more than welcome to.
  11. Better breath, whiter teeth, healthier skin, less wrinkles, massively reduced chance of developing various nasty cancers, miss out on a chronic cough, smoking can lead to urinary incontinence in women, something else you are better off without. Thats all that springs to mind but there are many more.
  12. The only thing that I will say is that while cannabis is used safely by many people with no ill-effects, the gateway-drug theory is true, 100% of users of hard drugs started with cannabis
  13. Think I will keep my willy out of any further discussion thanks. Anyway if I did smoke there are health issues that would concern me more than impotence. Well done for giving up, did you know that when you give up your lungs begin to recover and, if you stay away from smoking, will eventually (several years down the line) be as good as new?
