  1. cheers Molly, will check them out. Just tried Artisan and they have a limited set menu - 3 starters, 3 main, etc. - for parties of 8+. Need to be there at 6pm for Catch if it's a the same number party.... :-S
  2. Help! can anyone suggest a restaurant that does menus ranging from good-excellent? Price isn't too much of an issue (£15-£45 a head seems reasonable to me) I'm looking for anything other than Indian, oriental and Italian. I don't know if there's anywhere that does contemporary british cuisine or just contemporary European. Was recommended 543 on Eclesall rd but found out it's closed down :-( cheers
  3. a mate of mine is in charge of the renovation of the Cutty Sark and he's from Sheffield :-) He's also working on Britain's first 6* hotel
  4. here in London I pay £3.50 for a day pass so it's a justifiable comparison: Drivers are worse here but buses are so much more regular and as well as that I can take night buses until 6am the following day (a night bus is usually as regular as a sheffield 'normal' bus)
  5. As the title suggests, I was wonderin if anybody had any idea of what events are taking place over the Easter wknd?.....I know it's a month away but seeing as I'm traipsing up from the big smoke I just wanna make myself a decent itinerary - other than seeing the folks of course! Cheers.
  6. any of these would do me: http://www.atspeedimages.com/limerock_2005/concours/1976_aston_martin_v8_vantage/1976_aston_martin_v8_vantage.jpg http://www.dearbornauto.com/sold/index-Pages/Image25.shtml http://www.dearbornauto.com/sold/index-Pages/Image26.shtml http://www.carsearch.com/739695.htm
  7. It's funny that you should ask why people want to come here. Britain and Ireland have been the biggest exporter of their own citizens in the history of civlisation(in relation to population size). As well as exporting people, they also did a very good job of exporting their culture to all these foreign shores, particularly during the Victorian era when it became the 'latest' thing to spread the christian word to these 'heathens' and show them how to live as 'civilised' people. This 'Christian Commonwealth link' has always been one reason for people migrating to the UK. Britain, as a result of it's Empire, also became very wealthy by exploiting the countries in the Commonwealth (as well as some that are no longer, or never were, part of it), so some would argue that perhaps this sapping of 'our wealth' is in fact redistribution of stolen/owed money, or at the very least that the empire was built using other peoples sweat and blood. Another reason people come to this country is because of the history it has in upholding human rights (something that started with the anti-slavery movement which, funnily enough, went against Britain's initial complicity in it). Britain together with the USA were partly responsible for starting International Law when they signed the Trans-Atlantic Charter, which is why Amnesty International carries weight in this country (unfortunately America has severely undermined it's position over the last 50 years in this respect, especially now with it's campaign on Terrorism and the Internationally illegal war in Iraq, and Amnesty is considered a bit of a meddling nuisance over the pond). As for your Majority white statement...the National Socialist Party of Germany were once a majority but it didn't mean they were necessarily in the right (and before anyone picks up on this, I'm not comparing white Brits to Nazis). And do you really think that ALL white British folk are of Anglo-Celtic origin? And even if they were do you really think they would all agree with your opinion? And what about all the none-white British people, do they not have a right to be heard? You're probably right in your observation that there are too many illegal immigrants in this country but your arguments seem to stem from Fear or Bigotry, either way it's ignorance. :-(
  8. Sheffield Born n Bred. However, I've been living in London for the last 3.5 yrs, currently residing in Angel
  9. s'pose it depends on your view of life? i'm sure there are plenty of women (I know a few) who really don't mind, and in fact find the whole subject quite funny... .after all, "are all they good guys gay"?!?.....
  10. I'm a good guy and not gay....have been in a relationship for a while though, but would say I was good before that.. However, I do find that sometimes an innocent conversation with a woman will lead to them thinking that perhaps something may develop from it...or sometimes other women think that that is my motive.. Funny one, this platonic relationship thingy majig. It's quite interesting to analyse Women's relationships with gay men and who uses who...often gay men have a number of different 'types' of female friends, of which only a select few have the 'privilge' of being able to call themselves FagHags...
  11. You have proved beyond all possible doubt that should any storm , earthquake , hurricane , typhoon , flood or fire ever threaten America , Bush and his vile co-horts should get their jackets off and get stuck in. No wonder the Rest of the World pities America . Look at the prosperity in Africa whilst America sinks into a sea of poverty ! Look at the millions fleeing America to go and live in Cuba [island of fun and freedom ] and the Democratic Republic of North Korea , away from the Washington dictatorship. Look at the stability and equality in the countries of South America , whilst America changes governments every 4 years . Look at Western Europe , united and happy , dancing round maypoles , singing praises to the Euro as they scatter their worthless dollars into the Seine and Rhine . Look what wonderful Socialist societies there were in Eastern Europe before the West undermined it all. All that silly stuff about an , 'Iron Curtain' and oppression . Sheer fantasy ! Look at Asia, with its democracy and prosperity and how America tries to copy such culture in dress , food , films .....etc..... Yes , Mr. Moore , once again you have pointed the way towards a perfect society , free of all the Evils of Capitalism and its satraps. You are a Gentleman and a Scholar and May All Your Sons Be Bishops , A Concerned Carer from Cool Britannia [/b] It's nice to see that you've got the hang of sarcasm, but I don't think the earlier quote was about America as a nation and what it has/has not done to the rest of the world. It is a criticism of the response to this natural disaster by Bush and his Neo-con puppet masters and why contingency plans failed or were not in place for something that had been predicted by a number of Americans. :-)
  12. Coming back to the original point of this thread (not to say that your discussion is of no interest). I'm not a great fan of this guy, but sometimes he has a good way of getting a point across: "Friday, September 2nd, 2005 Dear Mr. Bush: Any idea where all our helicopters are? It's Day 5 of Hurricane Katrina and thousands remain stranded in New Orleans and need to be airlifted. Where on earth could you have misplaced all our military choppers? Do you need help finding them? I once lost my car in a Sears parking lot. Man, was that a drag. Also, any idea where all our national guard soldiers are? We could really use them right now for the type of thing they signed up to do like helping with national disasters. How come they weren't there to begin with? Last Thursday I was in south Florida and sat outside while the eye of Hurricane Katrina passed over my head. It was only a Category 1 then but it was pretty nasty. Eleven people died and, as of today, there were still homes without power. That night the weatherman said this storm was on its way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody tell you? I know you didn't want to interrupt your vacation and I know how you don't like to get bad news. Plus, you had fundraisers to go to and mothers of dead soldiers to ignore and smear. You sure showed her! I especially like how, the day after the hurricane, instead of flying to Louisiana, you flew to San Diego to party with your business peeps. Don't let people criticize you for this -- after all, the hurricane was over and what the heck could you do, put your finger in the dike? And don't listen to those who, in the coming days, will reveal how you specifically reduced the Army Corps of Engineers' budget for New Orleans this summer for the third year in a row. You just tell them that even if you hadn't cut the money to fix those levees, there weren't going to be any Army engineers to fix them anyway because you had a much more important construction job for them -- BUILDING DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ! On Day 3, when you finally left your vacation home, I have to say I was moved by how you had your Air Force One pilot descend from the clouds as you flew over New Orleans so you could catch a quick look of the disaster. Hey, I know you couldn't stop and grab a bullhorn and stand on some rubble and act like a commander in chief. Been there done that. There will be those who will try to politicize this tragedy and try to use it against you. Just have your people keep pointing that out. Respond to nothing. Even those pesky scientists who predicted this would happen because the water in the Gulf of Mexico is getting hotter and hotter making a storm like this inevitable. Ignore them and all their global warming Chicken Littles. There is nothing unusual about a hurricane that was so wide it would be like having one F-4 tornado that stretched from New York to Cleveland. No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It's not your fault that 30 percent of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands had no transportation to get out of town. C'mon, they're black! I mean, it's not like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving white people on their roofs for five days? Don't make me laugh! Race has nothing -- NOTHING -- to do with this! You hang in there, Mr. Bush. Just try to find a few of our Army helicopters and send them there. Pretend the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are near Tikrit. Yours, Michael Moore MMFlint@aol.com http://www.MichaelMoore.com P.S. That annoying mother, Cindy Sheehan, is no longer at your ranch. She and dozens of other relatives of the Iraqi War dead are now driving across the country, stopping in many cities along the way ( http://bringthemhomenowtour.org/ ). Maybe you can catch up with them before they get to DC on September 21st."
  13. Before you settle down for a deeply engrossing conspiracy story of how the American government was involved in the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers, I must tell you that this has nothing to do with that 9/11. In fact the 9/11 I'm 'briefly' gonna talk about occured nearly 30 years prior to the Twin Tower attacks. On September 11th 1973, a Democratically elected government in Chile was violently overthrown in a bloody coup which saw it's leader (President Salvador Allende) assassinated and the Presidential Palace bombed by fighter jets. Over the following 17 years a self imposed Dictator, Pinochet, ruled over the country imposing his bloody way of life on the citizens of Chile. During this time thousands of people who opposed his regime were murdered (at home and abroad) or disappeared, and over 1 million people were forced to flee to other countries in fear of their lives. Thankfully since 1990 (when Pinochet was ousted in a Yes/No vote, the first since he had forced his way into power), the people of Chile have been slowly rebuilding their lives and their democracy. In the years after the Bloody coup, many people here in Britain worked towards helping those affected by this atrocity especially the political prisoners, many of whom were victims of torture. One of the groups of British people who helped the most were the Miners and their families through the means of the NUM. As a result of this help many of the political prisoner were 'allowed' to leave the country with the condition they didn't return or else (yurp, you guessed it, they'd be killed as soon as they stepped of the plane upon return). Many of the prisoners came to Britain and in particular South Yorkshire as there was a feeling of Solidarity with the people of this region. As the years went by people settled down had families and carried on with their Anglo-Chilean lives. In the eighties when the big Miners Demos were taking place, the Chileans supported the miners in which ever way they could, as in their time of need it had been the miners who had come to their aid. It is now coming upto 32 years since the Coup in '73 and many of the Chileans who arrived in Yorkshire have either returned to Chile, died or moved on. But their still remains a significant presence in Britain, especially in Sheffield and Rotherham. All these Chileans have kids who were born or grew up here (I'm one of 'em) and some even have English grand kids. People have come and gone and Sheffield has changed drastically in that time, but one thing has remained constant throughout their time here - the memories and the fact they must not allow themselves or others to forget what happened. The way this manifests itself is that every year a small group of people (Chilean, English and other backgrounds) commemorate the events of 9/11 1973 by holding a vigil for those who died, disappeared or were exiled. This vigil takes place on the steps of the Sheffield Town Hall and this year will take place on the 10th (this Saturday). Subnote: The events of 9/11 1973 were funded by the American government of Richard Nixon (something that was revealed in the recently declassified American Government documents) - this subnote is not for people to start a pro/anti American debate but purely as a fact. Cheers, Joe Compañeros desaparecidos, PRESENTE!
  14. I've noticed quite a few threads over the last few months re. learning spanish so I thought I'd let those of you who may be interested know the following: I know somebody who does private tutorials to all levels (beginners - degree). Re. credentials, this person has lectured at both Sheffield Uni's and at other institutes in Yorkshire and to all ages (4 to 65+). I have already referred other SF members and they are very happy with the standard of teaching and their own rate of progress. If you are interested in the above then please feel free to msg. me. Cheers, J :-)
