  1. Whitwell Festival of Music, now in its 10th year, has just opened applications for local bands and artists who would like a chance to play. Dates are 7/8/9th September 2018, and it's located just a couple of miles from Junction 30 of the M1. The festival, entirely not-for-profit, is organised by a team of volunteers and raises thousands of pounds for local good causes. It's a very family-friendly, multi-genre event which showcases local talent alongside some biggish names. The last few years we have had Dr and the Medics, Oliver/Dawson Saxon, Ed Tudor Pole, Eddie & the HotRods, Sham 69 and Nizlopi on the bill. We have around 15 slots left to fill - we are looking for bands of all genres, originals and covers (although we do get LOADS of applications from rock cover bands and will maybe only need two!) Please have a look at our website and follow the link to the band application page. http://www.whitwellfestivalofmusic.org.uk Thanks!!

  5. OK, it has come to the time of year again when I'm asking if any bands/musicians out there have got what it takes to play at Whitwell Festival of Music, which will be on 11/12/13 September (just off J30 of M1). The festival is a charity event now in its 7th year, organised by a team of volunteers. Over the years we have donated thousands of pounds to local community groups and charities who have desperately needed our funding. All artists play for free, but we provide excellent venue, staging, backline, sound engineers (done the likes of Glastonbury etc) and an opportunity to sell merchandise, gain new fans etc. Free beer & food for musicians. Take a look at the main website for what we offer. There are 2 stages, indoor and outdoor, plus an open mic stage, workshops, craft stalls, caterers and 2 bars including real ales. There are also basic camping facilities nearby in the village. Over 800 people attended the festival on the main day last year. We are looking for quality artists and bands of all genres: originals and tribute bands to do a set of 30-40 minutes depending on where place on the line-up. The following opportunities are available: Friday night indoor stage (genres not decided yet) Saturday afternoon and evening indoor stage (folk, acoustic, singer-songwriter) Saturday afternoon and evening main stage outdoor (all genres - particularly welcome something a bit different from usual rock/indie/punk covers) Sunday afternoon indoor stage (jazz, blues, acoustic, easy-going chill out). To apply please go to: http://whitwellfestivalofmusic.org.uk Also looking for children's entertainers, walkabout artists, morris team, family-friendly comedians and festival traders. Applications open until 14 February (short window, I know, but we always get inundated with applications and we listen to EVERY one). Thanks for your interest, folks. We have managed to book some fantastic bands through this particular forum so look forward to your applications.
  6. I know there is a lot of info about Parking Eye on here but can't find anything to answer my question, so hope you can help... Last June my elderly dad overstayed in a free (Farmfoods) Worksop car park by 10 minutes. He got an 'invoice' from Parking Eye on his car. However, as I had had a similar experience in the Centertainment car park 2-3 years ago and got helpful advice from this forum to ignore all correspondence and it would go away, I told him to do the same, which he did. Little did I know that the rules had changed, and so when he told me about the last couple of letters that came through threatening him with court I continued to tell him to ignore them. Last week he told me that he had had a letter on 15 April from Northampton County Court issuing a judgement against him for £135, and after researching on the web I now find that the rules have changed and it wasn't such a good idea to ignore Parking Eye after all. Is there anything he can do? Does he have to pay £135 to the court? I feel really bad about it all now as he was prepared to pay the Parking Eye invoice in the first place and it was me who insisted that he didn't.
  7. Tickets are now on sale for Whitwell Festival of Music which takes place on 5/6/7 September 2014 in Whitwell, S80, just a couple of miles from J30 of the M1. Available via paypal through our website (see below). Camping is available but limited availability means that you'll need to book early. Over 25 bands of all genres over the weekend, lots of real ales and ciders, craft stalls, value-for-money good food, open mic opportunities, kids stuff and workshops. An adult weekend ticket is only £20 - they're selling quickly! It's now in its 6th year and getting better every time! Please check our website as bands are being added to the line-up regularly... http://www.whitwellfestivalofmusic.org.uk
  8. We donate all profits to local community groups. The money from last year's festival was shared out between a voluntary project for autistic teenagers, local scouts & guides group, childrens playscheme, voluntary youth club, local sports club, plus £500 was given away as a young musician's fund to help new musicians who show a talent at school (but don't have the money) so that they can purchase an instrument. Previous year's profits have gone to groups including British Legion, Just Good Friends (disabled adults), local cricket club to encourage youth participation, Lee Bonsall Trust to support sufferers of PTSD. We usually ask for local groups to apply after the festival and then share the money out, rather than decide which charities are going to get it beforehand. We have given away thousands of pounds to some good local causes over the past few years. Hope that helps. And thanks to all the band applications that have been submitted so far. There are some very interesting ones and I'm sure we will be getting in touch with many of them in due course. Thank you.
  9. 10. Not as far as I know. I went through the process of approaching agents around two years ago, but there doesn't seem to be anyone locally (not according to The Writer's and Artists Yearbook). It would seem that all the big ones are in London, probably because that's where the big publishers are, too. It's not the case that if you have a 'local' story you will need a local agent/publisher. My novel is set in quite a specific area of north Notts/Derbyshire but a top London agent was quite happy to take it on. If the story and style of writing are good enough an agent will be interested.
  11. Thanks everyone. There are some really good suggestions. I like the idea of saving up on their behalf to help them with a future house deposit. I might also do some budgeting and let them know how much disposable income I have left after paying for food, mortgage, bills etc (I suspect it's around 10% of my wages which puts it into perspective if they are keeping 80% of theirs!!)
  12. I'm providing them with what I've provided them with all their lives!! Bed, board, food, packed lunches, laundry etc. The only thing I won't be providing them with now is new clothes & shoes - they will buy their own.
  13. My teenage children are in the very fortunate position of having just started full time jobs - a 16-year-old on an apprenticeship earning just over £500 a month, and an 18-year-old with net pay of just under £1000. Their first paydays are today. However, until now I have been able to get child tax credits and child benefit because of them being in full time education. This has obviously stopped and I will need to take board off them. I remember when I lived with my parents I usually paid around a third of my wages to my mum, but talking to other people this seemed a bit steep!! What do others do? I was thinking around 20 percent of their pay after taking off things like travel costs. Do you think this is fair? Advice please...
  14. I pick them green and put them in the fruit bowl with a couple of bananas. Also nipping the top shoots out helps them to ripen quicker.
