  1. Our Fave Places is the best website to get Sheffield tips on the best things that are on, the best places to go and whats good generally in Sheffield http://www.ourfaveplaces.co.uk/ just on a note of accuracy....as far as I know Enterprise are the cheapest car rental and you definitely cant get a car for a week for £50....try more than double that. IF you want to check car rental places to get some prices then all the major companies are here like Hertz, Avis, Enterprise etc.
  2. The sausages at Mr Pickles on Abbeydale Road are the best I have had in Sheffield. Second place, Whirlow Hall farm, third place Moss Valley
  3. anyone noticed that this is now being fitted out - but seems like the proposed demolition and building of flats isnt happening - this looks like a refurb of the pub? wondered if there is any gossip that anyone here knows about...
  4. sorry but I think your information is incorrect. There's no planning application in the system from the last year for 100 Matilda Street, the address of the Matilda Tavern. You may have a seen a notice outside of the the MAtilda Tavern for one of other drinking establishment proposals in the area - either the microbrewery within the Sidney St development, or the restaurant and microbrewery in Geoff Hall carpets (14/03969/CHU) I've been keeping an eye on the Matilda Tavern as I had an idea of reopening it. the owner never responded to my enquiries.
  5. its part of the Roco http://www.theroco.org/ there isnt much info on their site but they have said they are open in the week until 6 and then till late friday and saturday. search for theroco on twitter and there are some pics of the bar. looks good.
  6. back to areas, heres an idea : http://www.blundells.com/buy/property/3-bedroom-terraced-house-in-sheffield,s4-ref-3685991/ lets face it, for £100k you are unliekly, i think, to find the house that meets your requirements in the catchments areas of the schools that many here would say are the "good" schools. but there is far more chance of finding decent houses in decent areas that are reasonably close to the station - but you will be buying in unfashionable, or downright disrespected areas. the property above is in an area many here would say you definitely shouldnt live in, for whatever reason (mainly fear of crime - not the actual likelihood of crime). my personal tip would be to look in norfolk park. there are great houses there, that are arguably "undervalued" due to the area's mixed reputation, its very close to the station and not far from the city centre (20 min walk) with all its amenities. try some of these http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/find.html?searchType=SALE&locationIdentifier=REGION%5E82415&insId=1&radius=0.0&minPrice=&maxPrice=120000&minBedrooms=&maxBedrooms=&displayPropertyType=houses&maxDaysSinceAdded=&_includeSSTC=on&sortByPriceDescending=&primaryDisplayPropertyType=&secondaryDisplayPropertyType=&oldDisplayPropertyType=&oldPrimaryDisplayPropertyType=&newHome=&auction=false
  7. Porter Pizza Company newly opened on Sharrowvale Road does takeaway and they are looking to do delivery. Decent wood fired oven etc. As far as I know it will only be them and Italian Express that will do delivery of that sort of pizza.
  8. The word on the street is that one of Sheffield's best coffee shops will be opening a shop in Park Hill at some point in the (near?) future. Your daughter will be able to get the tram to work easily - even when it snows. In terms of nearby amenities, there is Norfolk Park which is a nice park with great views, pubs/bars (Sheffield Tap, Showroom, Rutland) the other side of the rail line, restaurants/cafes in the centre (St Pauls places, Marmadukes), emerging places around Castlegate (Cafe Roma - great panini). but you dont walk out the door and find cafes etc. IF she wants to be in walking distance (to me that means 30 mins) of Uni of Sheffield and affordable then Sharrow/Nether Edge is a good bet although there will be people who will come up with tales (which I am contradicting) of safety concerns etc. Either way, this area couldnt be better located in being close to pubs, bars, shops, cafes, resturants - from the wide variety of global cuisines on London Road, to the rapidly changing Abbeydale Road, to Sharrowvale Road on the other side and Ecclesall Road if you want the comfort of chain eateries and orange skinned people in Porsche Cayennes. In all honesty I would see PArk Hill as liveable (the flats are great with fantastic views), with a growing (slowly) community of residents and businesses moving in (graphic designers, warp films etc). However it isnt yet an "established" area and the immediate surrounds are not buzzing. I personally would not flag safety concerns there - the remaining families in Park Hill (existing tenants) are located at the other end and it is no longer the "sink estate" it once was regarded as (see this article for a description of the different Park Hills) http://www.insidehousing.co.uk/uphill-struggle/6527823.article. however, much of the complex is empty; and most of the "life" your daughter may want to get to is the other side of the rail line and the city centre - this isnt as far as away as it sounds as Park Hill is level with this with the footbridge connections. I still do believe that Park Hill is a good, if longer term investment: - the conversion is good quality and the flats are spacious and well done - in contrast to many rabbit hutch city centre living flats being built elsewhere. ITs architectural status and significance looks unlikely to diminish and I think interest will only grow - the areas adjacent will in time develop. Castlegate will be developing (i cant promise what rate) as the council's plans come forward - although I would agree this isnt certain what timeframe this will happen in). Fitzalan sq and the new Art School will also, i think start to change the area around Commercial St and High St as well as the square itself. one day the blocks immediately around the station will also be developed - especially as the former Nelson Mandela Building has been sold meaning there might be renewed interest in it. The grey to green scheme from park sq roundabout through to shalesmoor will hopefully make some things happen down in that area with the right luck - espcially if the WEst Bar development starts to build out. however if your daughter wants somewhere more immediately or obviously vibrant then nether edge, sharrow, sharrowvale or meersbrook (via the number 10 are good options....or even "the lakes" and other housing close to abbeydale road where there are other buses to uni (85, the Tesco P&R buses). however places may be smaller and more expensive than you might want. To be honest, the best thing is for her to visit Park Hill - if she is into art, then she could check this out this saturday at the Scottish Queen gallery on site, and visit as the sun goes down - she will get a sense of how it might feel and how she will feel about it http://www.s1artspace.org/programme/park-hill/
  9. its eritrean as the thread title stated. I dont know how Eritrean differs from Ethiopian but they do have various pasta dishes on the menu which may be the italian influence. they have menus in there, yes but theres nothing on line. if you want to see any pictures of the food, you can see some on the facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Frehiwet-Habesha/116935128515341
  10. is it? https://www.google.co.uk/?gws_rd=ssl#tbm=nws&q=pedestrian+killed+uk 3 pedestrian deaths in the last day and a half alone. https://aseasyasridingabike.wordpress.com/2015/08/25/deaths-on-the-road/
  11. welcome to the world of driving. for your information, you are likely to find driving into and parking in large cities difficult and expensive. Sheffield is in fact at the lower end of the scale (in terms of parking availability and cost). Leeds city centre parking is many times more expensive than Sheffield. That isnt a snarky post but aimed to challenge your expectations as you explore wider and wider in the car.
  12. have you been to Lucky Fox on Division St? Its not a restaurant but then fried chicken is stretching it a bit for "restaurant" type food. Anchorage may also do something similar (I dont understand american food so dont really know what their menu is on about http://www.anchoragebar.co.uk/ )
  13. i dont wish to sound critical, and i do really wish this reopening well, but can i plead with you to get a different sign for this pub! i am 99% sure this as it is is putting potential customers off. the cheap looking plastic sign and lettering make it look like a takeaway, I'd almost guarantee that if you replaced this with a nice, tasteful traditional pub sign, painted on wood or whatever, you will see trade increase. especially as the Beer Engine is reopening which will introduce competition for exactly that market.
  14. it always raises a smile when motorists make comments about the laziness of pedestrians
  15. Your sons story has attracted considerable interest. This seems to be a US website (granted as you can tell from the name it is a bit of a niche audience). http://www.treehugger.com/bikes/uk-teen-cyclist-hit-car-told-sorry-cant-stop-your-blood-would-upset-my-kids-were-late-school.html
