  1. I have to admire your courage. Like religion politics brings out the worst traits in people. Not only do you get religious fundamentalists (with a strict adherence to orthodox theological doctrines) you also get political fundamentalists also with (a strict adherence to political doctrines) often of the right-wing fundamentalists type. Ayatollah Cameron and his understudy cleric in waiting Clegg will be round to give a chest beating rant on ethics in politics and student fees.
  2. Morning all. I was looking at joining in with the Postcode Lottery, I have not had much luck with the Lotto of late and I thought it was time for a change. But I was wondering what charities Postcode Lottery support. I found a list of charitable organisations supported by the postcode lottery. When I did a search on several including one called the Canal and River Trust. To my amazement I discovered a petition on 38 degrees which is highlighting that the Canal and River Trust are busy evicting disabled and terminally ill people from their homes. It came as something of a shock to read what was going on. When the most vulnerable people are being abandoned on the towpath with just the clothes that they are standing up in. Maybe its as a result of a change in society, but it seems so wrong to me.... Is it me? The information can be found here https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/stop-evicting-disabled-elderly-and-vulnerable-boat-dwellers Now I'm wondering If I should join postcode lottery after all. It is obvious that the Postcode Lottery are either not vetting charities or keeping a weather eye on the activities of the charities that they support. I'm not a gambler in the tradition sense, but the odd flutter that also supports charitable giving is something I enjoy. What would you do?

We have a couple of female cats already. But about a year ago 'Boyo' arrived. He was not in good condition. Boyo had an abscess on his leg and needed to be cared for. So we took him in and the vet took care of his injury and his nuts! He is a medium sized male, does not mark territory and loves human company. He is comfortable around dogs and soon puts them in their place! Boyo will sit with you for as long as you like. Not very playful by nature and around 5 years old. Jet black, golden yellow eyes and blessed with a huge personality. We have another stray un neutered tom who calls round. He just wants to fight with Boyo all the time. Boyo could be best described as a cowardly scardy cat! He knows what a litter tray is for and he also understands the word no. He his happy to eat just about anything. Though Boyo is not the least bit interested in stalking birds. Now, we need to find him a new full time home. His picture is here: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-kZuEo5h_dhk/UlAXQXbavZI/AAAAAAAAGeI/h2eCUdSefiY/w130-h140-p/boyo2.jpg We think he would be good for an older person because of his gentle non aggressive nature. If you can offer him a home, he will reward you with lots of love and affection. We will conduct personal home check. Preference given to pensioners. Private Messages to me please.
  4. When fishing the area around Tinsley Marina, you can use the marina car park. It is open from 8am to 8pm. If you get locked in - see any of the boaters on the lower pond and they will always let you out. The boaters on the top pond are a miserable lot and have in the past tried to shut the gates to trap fishermen's cars inside. Sheffield Council gave £180,000 towards the marina development which also includes the use of the car park by the general public.
  5. Isaac Walton wrote the first fishing book "The Complete Angler" which was published in 1653. He spent over 40 years in the pursuit of fish. I would like my enjoyment of fishing to be acknowledged by the phrase "The Completed Angler" to be inscribed on my tombstone. Now and forever, any other fisherman would know the meaning. Mick
  6. The Plumpers. I met Johnny (Our Jack) a few times - many many years ago at the home of a friend. He was a friendly unassuming sort. I remember him saying that they used to live near the Plumpers pub. Mick
  7. Whiskey has now been recovered after a long ordeal. He will be back home with his family later today. He was found in Chapeltown. Everyone is very relieved.
  8. Yo Fred! On your rounds give my door a miss... I'm retired now.... I enjoy my life of leisure funded by my private and state pension, plus all the extra little benefits. Why if it was not for keeping my boat as a third home, I don't know what I would do with it all. Lateral thinking is what's needed.... A swim in the River Don for free, you never know, might even create a trend. Don't run home behind a bus to save £3 when you can run home behind a taxi and save £15. Think Lateral... you could use all what you save on luxuries like indoor swimming at the baths. Mick
  9. National Minimum Wage was intended to stop rip-off employers taking advantage of the working class. Now ask yourself, if a charitable employer would pay for an adult or an apprentice. Adult of £6.19 (over 21) or £4.98 (18 - 20) or £3.68 (under 18) or £2.65 (apprentice) Mick
  10. A small brown dog named "Whiskey" Frightened by a firework while walking alongside the Tinsley Canal. Last seen close to the Carbrook Tram Stop. Whiskey is a disabled persons pet. Wearing a leather body harness. Microchipped. Reward offered. See a picture in Lost and Found section. Tel 07984417175 Regards Mick
  11. It may be a bit off topic but how many baits can you fish off one rod? I ask this because I have seen rods used with a number of hooks attached along the line. Mick
  12. I went, it was a bit of a non event for me. I expected so much more - It was the first and last event of its kind to be staged in the park. I thnk the council got burnt on this one as well. Mick
  13. Like you I was at Tinsley but moved to Masbro. Happy days signing on with Harry and Shirley in the time office and ******* off the various inspectors in the yard. As for Vic Station - I was up there after it had closed and I came across a huge pile of human resources materials on various staff. It was good fun reading through what excuses were used for being "LOD". Happy Daze....
  14. It looks like the boaters at Tinsley Marina have banned fishing on the canal. Does anyone know if the boaters can do this - especially to the disabled fishermen. Numb Bum
  15. I just purchasd two refills from Gas and Hire at the top of shepcote lane. Their price was £25.50 per 13kg bottle incl VAT. I did not shop around on price. However, after comparing prices later on line I could have got them for £21.48 inc VAT. Anyone else purchased any bottles recently in Sheffield?
