  1. I worked for month in a jobcentre in London. I was horrified at the attitude of the other employees.... for the first few days. By the end of the month I understood. You're frequently threatened, mocked, abused and constantly lied to. You have all sorts of people turn from smiles to nasty in an instant so you're always tense and on your guard. I had people screaming in my face several times - I never knew what it was like to be frozen with fear before working there - for things completely out of my control. I had people tell me they were going to wait outside for me, that they knew where I lived, knew my mum etc etc. All in all, a relentlessly horrible experience. Still, it doesn't excuse what the OP overheard, and Sheffield jobcentres don't seem be anywhere near as bad.
  2. Former criminals getting gainful employment and contributing to society? Sounds brilliant to me. The advantages far outweigh the ruffled feathers.
  3. DOT MOT have always been good with me. My old banger got through four years running without a single service. Probably used them six times now with no fails.
  4. Timpson's at the Archer Road Sainsburys do passport photos. You can literally park just outside and there are just a few steps to get inside. £6.99 for six.
  5. Funny how cheap halos come these days. Pay a pound for the car park and you're a saint.
  6. All copies of the data in the same place? No sympathy whatsoever. Really REALLY basic stuff. No ethics issues at all. Data can be encrytpted if necessary and should always be backed up in separate locations. Quite right. There's a responsibility to ensure that participants' time isn't wasted. Can quite believe that someone has come on here to moan about about this.
  7. You obviously have to notify them of a change of address, but you do not need to change your signing office. For example, you can live in Birmingham but be registered at a Sheffield jobcentre. However, be prepared for the jobcentre to lie to you about this! I worked at a jobcentre in London for a while and they would tell people from other areas that they couldn't register there. They don't like having out of area people on the books for lots of reasons, some of which are quite understandable. Just stick to you guns and if they tell you that you have to move offices tell them that you know that that is incorrect and that you will not discuss the matter in person or over the phone. Tell them instead to put their reasons in writing.
  8. I really shouldn't take the bait, especially with such an easy target, but here are just three studies that support the view that cholesterol is associated with heart disease. You will notice that they are indeed from respected peer reviewed journals. I could list another 100 or so, but doing this isn't my main job. As for your advice to "open you [sic] eyes and google or wikipedia it"? Well that says it all really. Wikipedia and google are good for finding out a lot of stuff but they are not appropriate for finding out about proper scientific research. NONE of the current studies are based on Ancel Key's research. The fact that you think they might be clearly shows that have no understanding of the current evidence base. EDIT: Here's an extra one. One of the many that directly examine and undermine Kendrick's position. Mora, S., Glynn, R.J., Hsia, J., MacFadyen, J.G., Genest, J., Ridker, P.M. (2010). 9. I get very tired with people banging on about "proof". It's almost impossible to prove that causal links exist between variables in medicine. To do so you would need to perform unethical experiments on vast numbers of people. However, what we can do is look for likely associations and risk factors. There is strong (very strong) evidence that high cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease. My info comes from articles published in respected peer-reviewed journals. Where does yours come from?
  10. It's the strokes and heart attacks that see people off, not the statins! I don't know much about heart disease, but with stroke you're completely healthy until the moment that lump of cholesterol breaks free and shoots up that artery into your brain. Bit late to start taking statins then.
  11. You get a second opinion before getting work done, not afterwards! There's no point in getting a second opinion now and no point in complaining because there's no longer any evidence of the condition of the teeth before the treatment. A pointless filling is indistinguishable from a necessary one.
  12. The attitude of the OP makes me want to grab my camera and head on over to Tofts Lane! Will definitely be checking out the conservation group. I think they'll be delighted with the free publicity!
  13. Math and English GCSE are 'tick boxes' for lots of companies in that they require all applicants to have them. I'm 37 and have always just put "GCSEs - 9 A to C including English and Maths" on CVs. It's the truth, but no one has ever asked for certificates.
  14. Don't Cafe Rouge do an almost full English (sausage, bacon, eggs, mushroom and toast) with juice and tea or coffee for a fiver?
